CANBERRA front row stocks will be bolstered next season with the news that Roosters prop David Shillington will join the club in 2009 after agreeing to a four-year deal.
Shillington, 24, has been a priority signing for the Raiders, and with the departure of Michael Weyman next season to the Dragons, will be looked upon as a forward leader for the young Canberra pack.

Shillington said he’s looking forward to the challenge of moving to Canberra, and is excited about the direction the club is heading.

“The Raiders are a young side on the up, and after talking with Nigel Plum and Joel Monaghan it looks like they have a strong future,” Shillington said.

“They have a good young side with plenty of talent, and there Toyota Cup team is also strong at the moment.

“I’m looking forward to moving to Canberra next year, but until then I’ll be looking to finish the season strongly at the Roosters.”

Raiders Assistant Coach David Furner said the signing of Shillington was a huge boost for the club going forward, and looked forward to him arriving in Canberra next season.

“Front row is a position we’ve been looking at boosting, and I think he’s signing is a very good one for the club,” Furner said.

“His size, his aggressiveness, his off-load ability and ball playing ability makes him a great asset.

“He’s still young, and he’ll add a bit of starch to the pack.”

Shillington made his debut in 2005 for the Roosters, and has played 56 first grade matches.

Very good signing. I dare say a potential Origin postion had something to do with the deal. ;)

Things looking up for next year.

Side is starting to come together.

1 Goodwin
2 Graham
3 Monaghan
4 Best / J. Carney
5 Purtell
6 T. Carney
7 (need a halfback) (possibly Barrett / Herbert)
8 Shillington
9 Flanagan / Hinchcliffe
10 T. Thompson
11 Picker
12 J. Thompson / Plum
13 Tongue

14 Hinchcliffe / Flanagan
15 Campese / Chalk
16 Leyroyd-Lahrs / Plum
17 Tilse / Thurling

or something like that.

But again this is same old story..... the "look how good we will be next year" Raiders Fans syndrome!

Yep, good signing and I think the news that Costigan will more than likely be staying for another season more or less places us in a good position, from a forwards perspective anyway. Now we need to shed the dead wood and re-sign Campo. Forget about Barret and Heighington, they will not be coming. Retention of certain players from the Toyota Cup squad should now be the priority.

Raider do good?

Wow what a great signing, I'm impressed with this one.

Flanagan and Shillington, both potential rep players, and hopefully still one more big one to come.

Shillington was the most important in my opinion. I wasn't so certain when I first heard his name rattling around, but having seen him play a few times now, he's the kind of leader our pack needs.

A trifle concerned that if Logan and Costigan still depart (although it looks like we'll be keeping Costigan for another season) we'll be a big bopper short, but this is good nonetheless.

Now here's hoping we snare Barrett.

Good signing management. He'd be on around 200 per season over 4 years do you expect, or the fact that he signed for 4 might mean its a little bit higher. Anyway, atleast this guy has the quality to justify the dollars.

Quite exciting times. Hopefully Paea comes through as does Barrett. I'd probably prefer Hannant over Heighinton but either would be an absolutely huge bonus.

Good signing , he'll add size upfront.

Id like to play Picker at 13 , he still reminds me of the great B.Clyde. On current form Id have to have Tonguey on the bench and Id love to see Herbert play 1st grade.

cant wait to see shillington and flanagan in the green next season.
barrett and hannant/heighington would top things off nicely for 09.

just on pickers form this season,he hasnt played to his ability,he needs more minutes in the top grade.

While I don't think Barret is a high priority, nor a likely signing - i think the mere fact we have been fiercely chasing him (and others) has made our club more attractive to potential signings and re-signings.

I agree with you about re-signing Campo. I'm over Tongue - Campo to lock, Carney to captain, Tongue to the bench.

I have to say this is the most excited I've been to be green for some time.
