Raiders to bolster its brittle back line

An outside back is top of Canberra's recruiting wish list after the club conceded its depth out wide has been exposed this season.

The Raiders have sorely missed the experience provided by the departed Adam Mogg and Joel Monaghan.

With winger Daniel Vidot also moving to the Dragons next year, coach David Furner said they would scour the marketplace for a quality centre or winger.

Furner believes an experienced campaigner is needed out wide to provide guidance to a youthful back line led by Josh Dugan, Jarrod Croker and Blake Ferguson.

''Our squad needs some experience in those [outside back] positions. What calibre [of player], that's what we need to look at,'' Furner said.

''There's not too much around at the moment, [but] with Vidot leaving there's positions there that need to be bolstered.

''We've lacked that mental toughness that comes with experience and confidence.

''We lost two experienced players and what it did [show is that] we didn't have the depth.''

At this stage of the year, the marketplace is always light on for quality talent.

If the Raiders' search proves fruitless, they will invest faith in the young talent already at their disposal.

Drury Low has spent most of the year at Souths Logan, while there are high hopes for Toyota Cup players Jack Wighton, Sami Sauiluma, Haydon Hodge and Michael Chee Kam.

''I'm not going to pick just anyone up, we want to make sure they're suitable for our team,'' Furner said.

''We've got some players that have been playing for Souths Logan and also some 20s players, but I also think we need a couple of experienced guys there.''

Raiders CEO Don Furner said they would monitor developments at other clubs with interest.

''We're just keeping an eye on a few situations,'' Furner said. ''Sometimes at the end of the year, particularly the clubs in the semi-finals, they have to pay bonuses and sometimes someone gets squeezed out.''

Furner also refuted claims former Raider Justin Morgan had been recruited onto the coaching staff for next season.

Rumours have been circulating the former Hull KR coach had sewn up an assistant role, putting the future of incumbents Quentin Pongia and Andrew McFadden in doubt.

But Furner was adamant no discussions had taken place.

The club is currently undergoing an independent review into its poor season, headed by sports consultant John Waser.

''I've heard Justin Morgan's coming on board, and so was [outgoing Castleford coach] Terry Matterson,'' Furner said. ''Nothing's been done or decided. I haven't spoken to Justin Morgan or Terry Matterson. There's been no changes at all as far as I'm aware.

''As part of our whole review process something might come out of it, I don't know.''

David Furner has challenged the exciting crop of players that won the 2008 Toyota Cup title to lead from the front next year.

''I've spoken to Duges [Dugan], Crokes [Croker] and Joely T [Joel Thompson] that next year's their fourth in the NRL,'' Furner said. ''It's important they step up further again.''

What's the bet we sign someone like David Howell or another Elliott discard/genius to stifle the development of some up and comer.

I'm all for experience and if it was a Matt King type player, I'd have reason to be optomistic but why would any quality player want to play under Furner?

They better not sign up one of those dud type of players, would be a let down after all the good work they have done in re-signing players.

They'll probably sign Colin Best for his 'final swansong' before retirement at the cessation of 2012.

What are the thoughts on Reece Robinson? Is he good enough to sustain a first grade wing spot next year? He seems to go OK to me. What about in the halves? Obviously Campo will be back but who to partner him? To be honest I think McCrone deserves to play 7 next year as he has been close to the Raider's most consistent player. Sam Williams has been good in patches but he's young and still developing. McCrone/Campese is also the '10 combination that got the Green Machine as far as the semi finals so it seems fair to start the season with that pairing.

Robinson is junk. Runs the ball back like a fairy! Not a long term option.

McCrone is a terrible half IMO. He runs well but he can't pass or kick consistently well and I think Williams should be persevered with after a season in the weights room and hitting the tackling bags.

McCrone has utility value or could play in the centres if need be but I don't see his future at half back.

He's more a finisher than a guy that runs the ball back. Has speed and can spot an intercept but I was happy with Vidot. Of the backs we have coming through none are in the tall range which is always useful.

Thoughts on trying to get Monas back? I know he re-signed with Warrington at the start of the season, however we all know that ESL clubs are more than willing to release a player to return home to Australia.

Would add much needed experience to our side and is a a very popular character within the dressing room.

Id have Monas ( on the wing ) back but I dont think he would come back he seems to be happy over in the ESL playing alongside Mick.

RR is good but I think we need someone with abit more pace and ability to beat his man. RR can finish well but I doubt he could get on the outside of his man too often.

Low will get his chance and he fits has been playing well for SL.

Id like a centre who could set his wing man up. Our wingers generally caught a cold and Blake usually only scored from doing something freakish , rarely was he put in a hole by his centre.

No, you can't have him. He is brilliant. Both the brothers are.

Very settled in England now.

How is Crocker as a centre? Stick Ferguson outside him so you get a Campo, Crocker, Ferguson left attack. Good bit of flair there.
Then get a big guy on the right to play outside Thompson like that Niko guy from the storm (for example). Flair is overrated. Just go down the "we are bigger than you approach". It also gives Campo a good target for the cross field kick. Dugan can run in behind them looking for any mini breaks etc.

Criticism that can be thrown at both our centres is their lack of passing skills and the ability to set up their winger.

you could probably count the number of passes croker has made to his winger on a single hand. At least jt attempts a pass occasionally.

Oh right, i thought he had a bit more flair about him.

Stick Ferguson in the centre, and Crocker on the wing. See what he can do. You can't have two centres with no passing.

Or McCrone? Could he make a decent Centre? Runs well and can spot a gap but by the sounds can't pass much either? In fact what is your youth development doing? Herbert was another guy, could run alright but not pass.

I think you may have a problem there...

I've been saying since the end of the season for us (round 9 I think it was) that next year McCrone could fill a centre spot... He has the running game and can setup his outside/inside man... Plus, even though I am a fan of him, he is a 5/8, not a half.... Campese is our 5/8, Williams is our half. McCrone is a handy backup to either.

Id like to see what he could do in the centres. He has decent defense , a good running game with good speed and he can pass. What more do you need from a centre.

This would allow JT to move to the backrow or bench.

I also agree regarding your comments on McCrone been not a number 7.
He can play 5/8 ashe has the running game but he cant organise the attack.
Id like to get away from the left/right halves structure and go back to the traditional formation

Croker just looks scared these days. When old man MacDougall murdered him he looked like a timid lil child.

What happened to the guy who destroyed Justin Hodges in his debut season?
