Tongue named for Raiders

Tuesday, May 26, 2009
Canberra Raiders skipper Alan Tongue has been named to make a return to the Raiders for this weekends clash against the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium and will undergo a fitness test on his injured wrist later in the week.
Tongue’s inclusion would be a timely boost for the Green Machine as they will head into the match without star five-eighth Terry Campese, after he was named for NSW yesterday for the first State of Origin match in Melbourne on June 3.
Raiders Coach David Furner said Josh McCrone has been named at number six for the Monday night match against Souths and that Marc Herbert would remain at halfback after a strong display against the Warriors.
“Josh comes back into the side this week for Campo and its great to see him (Campese) get a chance to play State of Origin,” he said. “Herbie played well last week and is starting to get some form back so it will be a good test for our two young halves Monday.”
Furner said Tongue would train with the side on Wednesday afternoon with a specially made wrist guard, with a decision on his injury to be made once he had attempted to train.
“Alan will have to wait and see how the injury fairs after some training and we can then reassess his position,” he said. “Either he gets through it ok and decides to play on or he has to get surgery. Either way we’ll know this week.”
The Raiders will be searching for just their fourth win of the season on Monday against South Sydney, but the two points will be more than handy for their finals chances as they prepare to head into the bye the week after.

If Waddell doesn't come into the side after the wow of a game he had last week I will require some sort of blood sacrifice.

Still a dangerous side imo. We will struggle big time if either of Sandow and Sutton don't recover in time. We will have four of our main weapons out. Wing, Sandow, Sutton & Crocker as well as Wesser.

Hope Furner runs with McCrone and Herbert rather than playing Tongue in the halves, if he comes through his fitness test. You would think Plum would probably drop off the bench if Tongue is available. Get back to the basics Tonguey, tackling and support play. No Crocker or Wing in the Souths side, woud be nice to pick up 6 points over the next 3 weeks (Rabbits, Bye, Sharks) as the road ahead is a lot harder, although Manly at Brookie, prior to SOO 2, could be another game we should win. Critical that Herbert and McCrone do a job for us and I have a feeling they will without the dominance of Campo. One concern is the lack of an on field general as Campo seems be the only one filling that role (just ask Milne).

Dugan's 3 tries, 3 linebreaks, 300 metres and 5 goals last week weren't enough to get him into the team this weekend?

What a shame

Especially in Origin week when I need as many VNRL players available as possible!!!

I hope Furner has TLL run at Sandow like he had him run at Jones all game. Returning from injury and not the best defender anyway.

Come on there is still a chance , when has the team named on Tuesday by Furner run out on the weekend.
Dugan is all class and a special talent, maybe 5/8 this weekend

This is Herberts chance to cement his spot for the rest of the season, however the other good thing that could come out of this is that if McCrone is the 5/8 he could have a blinder and put a lot of pressure on herbert for the halfback position.

I'm actually really looking forward to this game despite the absence of campo because other players are going to have to stand up.

Tim Gable on ABC radio said this morning that Tongue has trained and can pass and catch the ball but not tackle with the wrist injury

I hope they rest him , we cant afford to play a player that is not 100%.

If he does play I hope he doesnt go near the halves , let the young guys McCrone and Herbert run the show.

Where is Justin Carney, is he injured. He is one of my favourite players and it was good to finally see him get a game in the centres a couple of weeks back. Young Croker was played really well last week too, but I can't believe Purtell is still in this team. You guys have some real good young backs coming through, and yet this dud keeps on making the team.

Great win and NO it wasnt because Souths played crap. we dominated them big time in the forwards and they could do jack sh*t because of it.

Our halves took control of the game and played great behind a awesome pack , also with a very good kicking game.
TLL brilliant in the second half , man I think NSW could use him.

When won without Campo as we did last week without Tongue and we won away. How good is it.

And our coach , that second try was a great set piece play for Milne to score off a short ball from Herbert. Well coached , he had the game plan to beat Souths without Campo.

Mate, I agree. It was a very good performance and well coached. You'll have to write something about how crap Troy Thompson played to get some sort of response though. Good luck with it.

Great confidence booster for the team tonight and special recognition to Marc Herbert, who I have bagged on several occasions. The forwards to a man were outstanding with Tilse and Miller handing in their best efforts of the season. Buttriss was a lot sharper out of dummy half and TLL, who has re-signed for another 2 years is no doubt the form backrower of the competition.

If I have to find some areas of concern (sorry Chachi) it's got to be our outside backs i.e. Graham, Purtell and Croker. Carney will come back in and I fear Croker will be the fall guy but having said that Graham and Purtell offer very little. Personally I would retain Croker and replace Purtell with Carney but we must look seriously at also giving Vidot or Huihahau their chance. I know a lot of people will also be calling for Troy Thompson's head and he does have the odd mistake in his game but he also has genuine leg speed for a front rower and I would have him over Logan.

All in all a great effort and hopefully we can now go on with it after the bye.

What a game. That was the best game I have seen from Glenn Buttriss and Marc Herbert. Both players controlled the game beautifully with McCrone chipping in with some nice plays. Herberts kicking game is really developing nicely.

Milne was sensational and I'm really torn between him and Dugan... they both must be in the side.

Our forwards could not have played any better. TLL, Miller and Thurling were the best imo. Tilse covered for Shillo well.

Tongue did some great work around the ruck with some good running and short passes and didn't interfere like he did against the storm.

Furners game plan was spot on. We almost had the perfect balance between playing one out conservative and expansive with lots of 2nd phase play.

The main negative is our goal line defence out wide. Croker and Purtell are the ones who keep getting found out.
