Raiders well aware of meaning of failure

From today's Rugby Union Times:

Raiders coach Matt Elliott is confident his players are fully aware of the importance of today's clash wiht the Sharks after an "intense week of training".

The Raiders are lagging in 11th position on the NRL ladder and a loss today could, depening on other results this weekend, see the Raiders just one point away from the bottom of the competition table.

Five losses from their past six matches has seen the Raiders slide well and truly out of the top four and in danger of now losing touch with the top 8 completely.

But Elliott believed the 17 players that participate tonight were aware enough of the situation to not let it get any worse.

"There's definitely been a lot of tenseness in our training this week but I look upon that as a positive that they know exactly how big this match is" he said. "I think it's really important for us that the guys have recognised that."

Elliott was thankful that today's side was close to "the strongest available". He said it could only help start a trend of confidence building.

"We need to add performance with execution and with that will come confidence" he said.

Elliott also questioned the timing of constant media speculation surounding player movements in the lead up to the trading period beginning July 1. He was concerned about the impact the speculation had not only on his own players, but every player in the league.

"I think it's a distraction to all people involved" he said. "Neighbours has weddings and rugby league has the anti tampering date. I can't wait to get to the other side of it, but whingeing about it isn't going to change anything."

With the realisation the trading period is here to stay, the Raiders are aware they cannot use it as an excuse for poor form. They face a Sharks side minus star players Kimmorley and Stevens, Peachey and Vagana in a match that their season depends upon.

"Obviously when we play we intend on picking up the two competition points but this weekend we really need to" Elliott said.

We played them at 5:30 last time and I even rushed home quickly from the gym just so I didn't miss the kick off but boy was that a big mistake

I wonder if they realised how 'intense' and 'important' the points were last week as well... what is the point of reacting to something after it has happened! :( We haven't been on the ball all season....

I hate Elliott's attitude. He keeps reiterating the same old stuff. I want reasons as to why we have been so poor this year and to date I have heard very little from the coach.

The rest is all just hot air to fill up some space in a paper.

Legend .... agree totally, then again most coaches in his position use the same old boring excuses .... blah blah blah

This is the bottom line Elliot ... if we have what it takes and if you have prepared the team properly we have a chance today to not only win but to make a big dent in our for/against stat.

I dont want a scrappy win by a close margin ... we are playing at Bruce, cold winters night against a team with its playmaker, fullback, try scoring centre and one big mean forward. That means we should win easily.

Anything less is just waiting for the inevitable.

If we lose today, kiss the rest of the season goodbye. The Sharks are without kimmorley, stevens and peachy and we have a full strength side.

When we have the opprtunity to win a game by a big margin, we just seem to want to grind out a win and be happy with that. So i agree Bay...

the canberra raiders are going to continue to struggle for the simple reason they have no one at half that can give them the direction needed to be a force in this premiership. i know the feeling being a souths fan. unlike souths though, the raiders pack is very good when all players are healthy and on the field, the on field generals that being the halves are letting this team down.

It's amazing mere elbow grease got us so far last year. Unfortunately professional clubs play well year after year, rather than relying on a one-dimensional style of play to get them over the line which fails after one season of success.

Sadly I have already said goodbye to our 2004 season. Our halves don't have a clue. Even if we win against the Sharks today, its not much to brag about given how weakened they are. Our season started to go downhill when we played them last and I can't see it stopping.

If there is one ray of light out of all this its that if we can get a good organisational half, we have the forward pack to be a competitive side and some "decent" outside backs (not all of them though, I'm sure you know who I mean).

I don't know how good Carney is but I would hate to lose another homegrown talent. At 17 we can't expect too much from him, but players like McLinden and Carney would want to play with a coach who can help their development. Halves are all about attack and unfortunately, as Bay56 says, Elliot just doesnt seem to have a clue there. Either get someone in to help with the attack side of the game, or step aside I say unless things start to improve in that respect.

With regards to Carney, if we signed a young half such as Firman/Head while it would be great, what would that say for Carney's chances of staying here. It would probably mean he would go in the direction of Finch (not such a bad thing), Cappy, Withers and Monaghan. For God's sake we need to hold on to one star half who is up and coming (wasn't Monaghan playing u19 a while back at state level?). An ideal scenario would be to bring in a half who would come cheaper, having reached the twilight years of his career, but is a proven performer and can assist Carney in his development for a couple of seasons. I know it probably won't happen, but just a thought...

carney was playing 5/8 last year in the u/19's wasnt he?? but then i dont see where mclinden would be playing. fullback maybe. then schif.. where's he play..
i spose that we all really like the players we have here, no matter how good they are percieved to be on the outside. so obviously buying a new half will force someone to a positional change. one that obviously we dont want now, but may be better for the future.
i will agree though, that carney is one of the greatest half prospects we've obviously had for a bit..

its too hard to see past our sympathy for players possibly getting the push.
i dunno!...
