Rams, Chargers, Raiders apply for L.A. relocation

As expected, the St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have submitted applications for relocation to Los Angeles.

Monday was the first day the organizations were eligible to petition the league, as required by the NFL Policy and Procedures for Proposed Franchise Relocations.

The NFL released the following statement:

"The applications will be reviewed this week by league staff and three league committees that will meet in New York on Wednesday and Thursday -- the Los Angeles Opportunities, Stadium, and Finance committees. The applications will be presented for consideration at next week's league meeting in Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday. The relocation of a franchise requires the affirmative vote of three-quarters of the NFL clubs (24 of 32)."

The Chargers released a statement of their own, outlining the reasons for this action:

"We have tried for more than 14 years, through nine separate proposals and seven different mayors, to create a world-class stadium experience for fans in San Diego. Despite these efforts, there is still no certain, actionable solution to the stadium problem. We are sad to have reached this point."

The Rams' statement was more elemental:

"The St. Louis Rams informed the National Football League today that the Rams propose to relocate to the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The relocation would be effective for the 2016 NFL League Year."

The Raiders were the last to release a statement:

"In accordance with the relocation policies, the Oakland Raiders submitted a relocation package to the NFL. The matter is now in the hands of the NFL's owners. An owners' meeting is scheduled to take place in Houston, Texas on January 12 and 13, 2016."

I know it was mentioned by AB in the offseason thread but I thought it was probably worthy of its own thread...

What is the possible outcome here? Can all 3 teams relocate to LA? Is it possible for even 2? What happens to the teams that get knocked back, do they go back to the original city with their tail between their legs and be like "will you have us back?" or do they keep trying other cities until they are successful?

As someone in the Facebook comments said, just merge them & call the franchise the Charging Ram Raiders.

'Wow, this is awkward......'

I've read that it's going to cost the owners around $550 million to relocate. Per team. Amazing.

I'm sure I've read on other NFL forums that it's likely that both the Chargers and Raiders will move to LA.

As a raiders fan I hope we can stay in Oakland... But the colosseum is by far the worst stadium in the league... In if we're honest it's embarrassing that we have to play on a football diamond early in the season.

And with the city of Oakland unwilling to look at funding a new one(and quite rightly may I add) I don't blame Mark Davis for shacking up with the Chargers and heading to LA.

We just can't continue in that stadium... Enough was enough.

In a perfect world Mark Davis would sell the team to a billionaire who will build a new stadium
In Oakland.

Larry Ellison of Oracle is the rumoured guy... But if we're being serious... Whoever wants to buy it will want it in LA... The franchise value will increase a lot in LA.

That $550M relocation fee almost pays itself when your franchise value will probably go up by close to that amount overnight when you get the green light to move to LA.

I can't see three teams playing out of Los Angeles and I can't see two teams from the one division as in the Raiders and Chargers playing out of the one city either.

they wont
the chargers have already intimated that they would move to the NFC

so likely Seattle or maybe the Cardinals move back to the AFC.

The question would be then do either the Seahawks or Cardinals or any other team for that matter want to switch? The possibility of playing a team like the Broncos each and every year maybe an attraction to do so.

I know at one time the Seahawks were in the AFC.

yeah, the seagulls make the most sense. cards have always been in the nfc. seagulls moved when the nfl changed to the current division formats.

The Seahawks and the Raiders have a pretty strong old division rivalry... Would love a chance to get at them twice a season again...

The old Bo Jackson v Brian Bosworth clash stemmed from that rivalry...

yeah the seahawks were in the AFC and then in the early days of the AFC West.
would be weird for either chargers or raiders to move conferences.
but anyway
disappointing

I gave my good buddy a call who lives in montclair whos a massive raiders fan to get an idea how they were feeling and he gave me a real interesting theory doing the rounds amongst raiders fans…

I don’t know if its raiders fans in denial or Mark Davis is a just a genius…

But the theory is… that Mark Davis and the Raiders want to stay in Oakland all along… The Raiders have joined up with the Chargers LA plan to get leverage to fund a stadium in Oakland.

At the moment the Raiders, Rams & Chargers all want to go in LA, but only 2 teams can go.

The Idea is that the Raiders will step aside and let the Chargers and Rams move to LA under the Rams stadium in Inglewood and the Rams and Chargers relocation fee of $1.1B($550M each) go towards funding the Raiders new stadium in Oakland.

So effectively Mark Davis manages to get Stan Kronke & the Spanos family to fund the Raiders new stadium in Oakland.

Which is genius… which makes me sceptical considering its Mark Davis…

That way the league gets a win for all parties… except St. Louis & Carson.

Knowing the Raiders its probably true but it backfires spectacularly in our faces…

Who gets this $550 million relocation fee? I was under the assumption that it went to the NFL itself.

Yeah the NFL gets the relocation fee...

But the NFL wants to avoid a situation where there's bitter infighting from the owners which can embarrass the league... Especially if an owner like Kronke decides to pull an Al Davis and take the league to court.

The league may just decide it would be better to use that relocation fee to build a stadium in Oakland and please everyone.

Obviously you would think the league would own it... An asset for the league perhaps...

Interesting. I'd be happy to see The Raiders remain in Oakland.
Yeah, our fans deserve it... After the shit the team has produced for the last decade...

The fans in Oakland have stuck by them... The stadium is an embarrassment though...
