Wests Tigers' request for Leichhardt Oval upgrade dismissed by NSW Premier Chris Minns

In short: Wests Tigers chief executive Shane Richardson wants millions of dollars for an upgrade for Leichhardt Oval, but NSW Premier Chris Minns says it will not happen.

The Tigers beat Cronulla 32-6 at their traditional home on Saturday night, with long lines for facilities and concessions at the ground.

What's next? The Tigers' next game at Leichhardt is in June against the Gold Coast Titans.

Wests Tigers may have to deliver on their promise to vacate Leichhardt Oval at the end of the year after the NSW government refused their request to fund an upgrade.

The Tigers will play five of their 12 home games this season at Leichhardt Oval but have long held concerns for the condition and facilities at the hallowed inner west ground.

Leichhardt has insufficient change rooms to host NRL men's and women's double-headers, regularly features some of the NRL's longest queues for refreshments, and pales in comparison to other Sydney stadiums when it comes to corporate and media facilities.

Former Tigers premiership player Dene Halatau spoke on ABC Sport's broadcast of the Tigers' 32-6 win over Cronulla on Saturday night about the special place the ground holds in the club's history, while acknowledging its shortcomings.

"[The Sydney Football Stadium, Western Sydney Stadium and Lang Park] are phenomenal, but a fan comes here knowing what they're getting," he said.

"In terms of facilities there's work that could be done, [but] the players have got everything they need.

"It's not modern, it doesn't have all the trimmings, but when a fan comes to Leichhardt they overlook a lot of the rest of that stuff."

On Monday, Tigers chief executive Shane Richardson and Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne banded together to request Leichhardt Oval receive 10 per cent of funding allocated to Penrith's stadium upgrade by the NSW government.

The home stadium of the three-time defending premiers will receive a $309 million face-lift in 2025 that expands the ground's capacity to 25,000 with an all-new western grandstand and refurbished eastern grandstand.

The Tigers, who finished last the past two years and have also hosted home games at Western Sydney Stadium, Campbelltown Stadium and Stadium Australia in recent years, have yet to commit to any home ground beyond 2024.

Richardson threatened to move the Tigers out of Leichhardt altogether if the request went unfulfilled, having relocated South Sydney's home games from Moore Park to Homebush during his time in charge of that club.

But on Tuesday, NSW Premier Chris Minns pointed to the state's financial situation as grounds for blocking the Tigers' audacious request.

"I appreciate that [the Tigers] have got to make a decision about their club and where they play their home games," Mr Minns said.

"But we, as everybody knows, have got $180 billion worth of debt in NSW.

"We've got massive pressure on the hospital system, education system, [and] we're rolling out the biggest public transport projects in the state's history."

Leichhardt Oval's status as a part-time NRL venue also influenced the premier's decision.

This season, the Tigers are playing five of 12 home games at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, one at Scully Park in Tamworth and one at Brisbane's Lang Park as part of Magic Round.

"I don't have spare dollars at the moment to pump into Leichhardt Oval, particularly as the Tigers' games are split between those two home grounds [Campbelltown and Leichhardt]," Mr Minns said.

"My real fear is that we put money into Leichhardt and the week afterwards they say now we need the money for Campbelltown.

"These things have got to be finely balanced and I'd love to have the spare revenue to pump into a suburban stadium at the moment, but I don't have it."

The Tigers return to Leichhardt on June 15 to host Gold Coast.

Even when we win we can't get anything positive out of news ltd. It must have killed them to have to throw out all their stories about the club being in crisis and their calls to sack Marshall. Of course, they spent minimal column space praising us on a great victory, based in skill, effort, and above all else, commitment to each other and the jersey.

Leichhardt Oval has been in the same condition it is now for a long time. It has attracted the same fanbase with the same behaviour for many a moon. It's funny that no fewer than 4 stories (and NRL360) have been printed since the victory, basically calling for it's immediate demolition. Funny how a news ltd 'journo' was on the hill to witness poor behaviour by a small group and just had to post how triggered, outraged, and upset she was by their behaviour. Did she actively seek out security or the police to report the matter? I bet not. If what happened was true I haven't seen anyone else corroborate the story. Has anyone seen if this has been verified by other witnesses?

There was an actual fight in the members at Moore Park on Friday night. Where was the same level of outrage over that?

A cynical man might see this as an orchestrated campaign by news ltd to embarrass the tigers (yet again). The only other explanation is Richardson campaigning for funds to re-develop the ground. If so there's better, more positive ways to go about this thankless task. Other than that he could just using it as an excuse to move to the soulless confines of the the Olympic Stadium and pocket $100k per home game, plus all the corporate stuff that most normal supporters will never see the inside of.

This is the problem when a sport becomes a business. Money is the only consideration. We're not even supporters anymore. We're stakeholders. What a load of shit.

A more cynical man would suggest that the 'Leichhardt Oval needs money for redevelopment' comes from 1 person only and that's Darcy Byrne. He's Labor aligned with the inner west greenies and doesn't want to put $1 into Leichhardt, knows it's a dump and wants the government to pay. Who do you call when it's time to bring up the issue? West Tigers, journalist loves it, it's bashing the tigers once again, Byrne doesn't get Football Australia (or whoever administers the A-Leagues) to attend the same media gab-fest. Point being, the next game following the Tigers V Sharks was the A-Leagues Women game on Sunday afternoon.

I think the Government is smart not to put money into Leichhardt as the council has done f**k all to restore it. Not sure that the abour government will help as there's no votes in it. Either fix it and piss off Campbelltown or piss off Leichhardt and put everything into making Campbelltown our home ground and area for pathways.

Richo basically said that on sen. Reckons the south West will increase in population by 500k over the next 20 years.

Only 20 years too late though, they wasted their opportunity and have done nothing but shit on ctown for their whole existence.

Bateman tells Tigers he’s coming back as CEO lashes laughing players
By Michael Chammas
September 13, 2024 — 3.40pm

John Bateman’s agent has informed Wests Tigers boss Shane Richardson of his client’s intention to return to the club for the next two seasons.

The Tigers had been privately hoping Bateman, who still has two years to run on his deal worth close to $600,000 a season, would remain in England or join another NRL club to free up a roster spot and salary cap space.

It comes as an irate Richardson lashed out at a group of injured and fringe NRL players in the aftermath of last week’s defeat to Parramatta in the “spoon bowl”.

Richardson noticed a number of players sitting in the players’ dugout laughing after the defeat consigned the Tigers to a third consecutive wooden spoon, prompting an angry response from the CEO.

Sources with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity in order to speak freely told this masthead that Richardson, who was also sitting in the designated Tigers dugout to the side of the tunnel, told players they should be embarrassed and at least pretend to care about the plight of the club.

The players who were sitting behind the Tigers’ bench included Brent Naden, Aidan Sezer, Justin Olam, Jayden Sullivan and Tallyn Da Silva. The fans sitting nearby allegedly heard the exchange between the CEO and the players.

A visibly angry Richardson also demanded the players make their way around the ground to thank the fans who had turned out to watch their team earn the dubious honour of finishing bottom of the ladder for the third year in a row. Richardson declined to comment when contacted on Friday.

In the days immediately after the team’s poor showing against the Eels at Campbelltown, the club received a phone call from Bateman’s agent, Isaac Moses, to clarify misconceptions around the veteran back-rower’s future given the widespread impression the Tigers did not want him next season.

Bateman, who signed a four-year deal at the start of 2023 when Tim Sheens was head coach of the Tigers, has struggled to live up to his price tag since returning to the NRL.
Loading

He was granted permission to leave the Tigers mid-season to play under former England teammate Sam Burgess at Warrington in the Super League.

Richardson has a close relationship with Burgess from their time together at the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Under the terms of the release, the Tigers had to terminate Bateman’s existing contract. Under NRL rules, any payouts would have had to go into this year’s salary cap.

The Tigers and Bateman then drew up a new contract to replicate the final two years on his deal. The NRL would not have approved the contract termination-renewal unless Bateman went into the salary cap for 2025 and 2026 at the value of the original deal.

The Tigers, who were willing to release Bateman to free up salary cap space this year, were hopeful he would decide not to return to the club after his stint in England.

But Moses this week contacted Richardson to confirm his client’s intention to see out the remaining two years of his contract.

Several Tigers players have been told they are free to explore options at rival clubs – including Sullivan, Naden and Charlie Staines – but are yet to secure deals elsewhere.

If that’s the attitude, they can all go for mine.

It’s cultural catastrophe.

John may play a lot better footy with fresh faces and Galvin and Luai. At any rate, he wouldn’t be laughing at his friends being slaughtered.

What a joke.

The play on Bateman was a fine attempt.

Honestly pay him out. He is shit. Losing 200-300k on your cap for a couple years isn't that bad. And it's worth it to get the guy out of the club who is clearly toxic.

Jack Bird doesn't appear to be a great signing. Otherwise recruitment is quality bringing in winners.

Re: Jack.
He’ll only be a dud if it doesn’t work, otherwise it’s a master stroke signing , we will see.

He could be of service. He could offer more than Bateman but the bar hasn't been set very high.

I just think they want good culture guys. Bird and Bateman ain't the type. Luai is. Anyone like that with a bit of fire in the belly and a thirst for improvement.

It’s not 2 or 300k, he’s on $750k, so unless someone takes him, we are stuck with a shut deal.

I guess we are all hoping Luai changes a lot of things for us when he arrives, we have a lot of good kids coming up, but imo, are still a year or two away from being ready.

Yeah that's fine. You don't pay the full amount.

Someone will take Bateman for 2 years at 350k. You guys pay the other half. We were paying off Blake and RCG for 3 years after they left.

He could have a similar effect to Crichton at the Dogs.

Old firm with Korisau. Bula and Galvin look fine. It will be the best spine the Tigers have fielded in a very long time.

They need to look at forwards. Remove bums like Bateman and bring experience.
