PAUL McGregor couldn’t believe his eyes when he spotted his skipper Gareth Widdop on the side of the road as the St George Illawarra coach headed to Kogarah for the clash against the Warriors.
Widdop hadn’t stopped for petrol, or a coffee.
Nope, it was a little old lady who brought the Dragons’ captain to a screaming halt.
Literally.
“He had a car accident on the way,” McGregor revealed following the 26-12 win.
And not just a minor bingle, but a full on T-bone assault.
Widdop was by himself when the accident occurred.
It is understood he was not at fault, but that doesn’t help his poor old car.
“The car is written off,” McGregor explained.

McGregor had spotted Widdop waiting for a tow truck, so they waited together. Then they headed off to the game which also saw the unassuming Englishman write his own name in St George Illawarra’s record books.
After starting the season under fire to keep his place in the team, let alone his job as captain, Widdop produced another fine performance, while his radar boot landed all five attempts at goal.
It saw him become just the third Dragon at the joint venture to notch up 500 points, joining Jamie Soward and Mark Riddell.
“I didn’t know about that,” Widdop said.
“It is obviously a big club and to do that here at Kogarah is pretty special.
“But I think the most important thing is getting the win.”

But for his coach, Widdop’s effort again highlighted his worth to the team.
“To put that aside (the accident) and perform like that is a credit to the skipper,” McGregor said.
“A real credit.”
Not that Widdop saw it as any big deal.
“I won’t be seeing it again, put it that way,” Widdop laughed.
“I will be riding my push bike to training for the next few weeks I think. Anyway, that is what happens, that is life.”
