Dragons captain Gareth Widdop involved in car accident before match against Warriors
Paul Crawley, The Daily Telegraph
PAUL McGregor couldn’t believe his eyes when he spotted his skipper Gareth Widdop on the side of the road as the St George Illawarra coach headed to Kogarah for the clash against the Warriors.

Widdop hadn’t stopped for petrol, or a coffee.

Nope, it was a little old lady who brought the Dragons’ captain to a screaming halt.

Literally.

“He had a car accident on the way,” McGregor revealed following the 26-12 win.

And not just a minor bingle, but a full on T-bone assault.

Widdop was by himself when the accident occurred.

It is understood he was not at fault, but that doesn’t help his poor old car.

“The car is written off,” McGregor explained.

McGregor had spotted Widdop waiting for a tow truck, so they waited together. Then they headed off to the game which also saw the unassuming Englishman write his own name in St George Illawarra’s record books.

After starting the season under fire to keep his place in the team, let alone his job as captain, Widdop produced another fine performance, while his radar boot landed all five attempts at goal.

It saw him become just the third Dragon at the joint venture to notch up 500 points, joining Jamie Soward and Mark Riddell.

“I didn’t know about that,” Widdop said.

“It is obviously a big club and to do that here at Kogarah is pretty special.

“But I think the most important thing is getting the win.”

But for his coach, Widdop’s effort again highlighted his worth to the team.

“To put that aside (the accident) and perform like that is a credit to the skipper,” McGregor said.

“A real credit.”

Not that Widdop saw it as any big deal.

“I won’t be seeing it again, put it that way,” Widdop laughed.

“I will be riding my push bike to training for the next few weeks I think. Anyway, that is what happens, that is life.”

I thought Widdop played with some real aggression yesterday and now we know why:

- he was dirty his car got totalled; AND
- if that wasn't bad enough, he was stuck on the side of the road with Mary! :joy:

It might go some ways to explaining his less than happy post-game interview too.

On a serious note, glad no-one got hurt.

Guys please don't feed the troll.

I've been critical of Widdop in the past but anyone who knows anything about footy will tell you that Widdop has been outstanding this year.

Defensively great, kicking has improved out of sight and more importantly he's running to the line. We're still not perfect, but we're miles ahead of we we were last year because he's lifted his game.

Well done Captain.

So because you dont like Widdop as a player, he deserves to be seriously injured in an accident?
Where did i say that?? Fake NEWS are you? I would have made him a cup of tea. Pretty sure he is more intetested in drinkg english tea than play making or running at the line. Compare him to Tommy Bishop and cryyyy! Bishop was a half. He could play 6 or 7. But he had balls, not a widdop bra.

Yes he has improved from 2/10 to 5/10. The fact is we need our captain and play maker to be at least 8.5 / 10. His defence is. His play making and leadership is not. Its good for you to criticise mary and our number 7.....you are a troll!! Amazing you think certain players can be criticised as you all do. But widdop is a special needs case is he?

I can't believe people still feed these guys! Astonishing.

Agree, Widdop has been very good this year. Defence outstanding and has been solid in attack. IMO, he needs to take the lead a bit more, McCrone is getting in the way a lot and it hinders us in a big way. When Widdop gets his hands on the ball, we look better.

I've been a big advocate of Widdop and I think he's a great player, but at the moment I don't think he fits in with us next year. He'll likely get recruited to another NRL Club.

Thank god you agree is he is not good dnough to fit in with our plans. If he was decent player he would. The reason he has improved from 2/10 to 5/10 is he is praying another club needs an average plodding 5/10 player. Wenty does.

Nah, nothing to do with not being a decent player, because he's a very good player. However, with Hunt and (likely) Dugan making up the remainder of the spine, we should be looking at a 6 with a bit more spark. Someone who can still play second fiddle, but still see/create opportunities with speed and footwork. I think Widdop has evolved from that sort of player.

Yes....in other words you are saying we need a good player at no 6. Not Widdop. Stop being PC and say it man.

Have you looked at the video yet?
I need you to confirm that the Widdop you bag as never having played a minute of good attacking football since arriving at the club is the same one in the video?
You seem to be very silent about it all.
Perhaps you think he has a twin brother or a double?

It's amazing to see how many of the players looking for contract extensions this year have shown dramatic improvement in their performance on last year. The good thing is that of those who did receive contract extensions, have continued to play well.

I doubt Mary is concerned about this aspect at all. He is simply focussed on receiving his own contract extension. His plan is a very similar plan adopted in the early games in 2015. He did mange to score a run of wins and get the team to the top of the ladder only to then see the players busted and burnt out with a long string of losses.

Mary is a self indulgent one trick pony and in my opinion NOT the coach our Club should continue with.
