Cowboys sign Manuokafoa

July 03, 2008 CELLAR dwellers North Queensland received some welcome good news after South Sydney forward Manase Manuokafoa signed a three-year deal with the Cowboys from 2009.
The signing of Manuokafoa, 23, will pave the way for Cowboys prop Ray Cashmere's departure.

He was told last week that he would be allowed to explore his options, most likely in the English Super League.

The Cowboys told Cashmere he would only be released if they could find a replacement of similar quality.

The 190cm, 115kg Manuokafoa is certainly that.

“Manase is a young, gifted player, who will add both size and quality to our forward pack,” Cowboys boss Peter Parr said.

“It is great news that this talented forward has decided to play for the Cowboys.”

The Cowboys pack will receive a facelift next year with former Origin backrower Jacob Lillyman leaving for the New Zealand Warriors and Kiwi international David Faiumu being granted a release.

Justin Smith, Ben Vaeau and Sione Faumuina are also believed to be in their final season at North Queensland.

Two questions:
1) Were we offered Cashy last year before he re-signed with Cowgirls, and
2) Should we make a play for Ray?

ching ching Mr Cashman!

I was disapointed when we let Ray go. Whilst he never got anywhere near his potential here, he always looked an honest player that wouldn't let you down and had the makings of becoming a top notch first grade standard forward... as the cowgirls found out.

Honestly though, i couldnt see him back at the Tigers as he'd probably be behind Payten, Galloway and Gibbs, and we wouldn't be able to afford the money he'd be attracing from OS.

According to garden gnome Royce, Cashmere is "a poor lateral defender".

Thanks for that you merkin.

If we still had Cashmere we'd end up one of those sh*tty defensive sides that concede 26+ points a game. Thankfully, Royce identified Cashmere's weakness early on, thus preserving our iron clad defensive line.

Nigel Plum also had to look for a new home because of his "orthodox" tackling style.

So in Royce's eyes, you have to be a good lateral defender, but not in an orthodox way...

both Cashmere and Plum are solid and hard tacklers. Players avoid running at them due to how hard they tackle.

And both rarely miss tackles.

Yeah, we've got heaps of players in our side already like that don't we Royce.

f**king stunted piece of sh*t.

nigel plumm would have to be one of the best defenders in the nrl, he rarely misses a tackle, always puts them on their back and reguarly jolts them.

his attack is lacking abit however i would still love him in our side.

He also doesnt defend in the gap behind the ruck unlike a certain other missed-tackle merchant in our side.

Yeh would be nice to have a bloke who defends in the middle of the ruck and not on the far edges even if the guru sizzler has some doubts on his ability

his attack used to be his strong point, a wide running back rower in attack, similar to Menzies in his early days, but would come in when defending to help out.

Sheens in particular wanted him to be a defensive player only.

Royca said his defence was orthodox and open to exploitation from bigger players.

Not yet have I seen his defence exploited by anyone.
