Penrith are using an interesting attack/defence substitution. Wallace is defending at 'right half' (three in on the right), Cartwright is defending at right edge forward (four in), and Merrin (attacking on the right) is defending in the middle.

What this means is Merrin doesn't have to defend on the edge and Wallace doesn't have to defend in the middle, where neither player is suited.

Or in other words, they're playing to their strengths instead of being slaves to rigid #structure - kind of like the old days (70s/80s) of league.

The only decent game i have ever seen by Wanger Blake was against us(hardly surprising), the guy has dicks for hands.

It's not too hard, but it's not ideal. And it relies on having a player to fit the 'opposite' role. There are also problems with uneven work rate. Cartwright is attacking as a half, which requires high involvement with a lot of movement. But defending that extra space in from where a half defends could require him to make twice as many tackles. You don't want your halves to fatigue from too much tackling.

Anyway, this half they're back to matching attacking and defensive strictures. Only Merrin's defence isn't exposed on the edge because he has moved into the middle, with Fisher-Harris playing edge forward off the bench.

Hope he never has to shake hands with Edward... could be a case of circumcision on the street!

#structure

They're obviously still using a structure. It's just that their attacking and defensive lineups don't match. We did this in recent years, notably with Hayne defending at left centre but attacking at left half in late 2011. Due to lack of fit outside backs we had been forced to play Horo and Ben Smith in the centres. Both fast back rowers, but still forwards. They were getting carved up on the edges. Playing Hayne up in the line allowed us to shore up one edge. And then in the final game of that season Luke Burt attacked (and kicked) at left half but defended on the wing.

More recently, for a few games in late 2013 Hayne again attacked at left half and defended at centre, which allowed Ben Roberts to attack at centre without being exposed there in defence.

We also did it with success in the 1980s, with Taylor and Sterling swapping places in defence, Kenny and Ella sometimes also.

It's a strategy as old as the game itself, and really not remarkable - other than to register surprise that in the modern game it seems so unusual, given the slavery to more rigid #structures.
