I was one of Firman's biggest fans when he was with us.

Now I think we can try and do better for 5/8.

Yeah I realise he is a half but surely he could slot in as a 5/8.

If not Firman, then who ?

Our current 5/8 situation is a band aid at best for mine.

We should be trialling Aitken and Sully before we go into the market place.

In one of the mags i was reading today in an article on Gallen, it was said that the reason Aitken hasn't been promoted to first grade is that he is having on going problems with his hamstrings.

For mine, he's still playing quite well for a bloke with dodgy hamstrings, something I've learnt quite a bit about this soccer season. Its not easy to play with hammie problems.

Well if I was Sully I would be looking for opportunities elsewhere.
Never meet a halfback that likes being a part-time hooker.

Like Craig Wing?

What I saw of Sully last year - he's a better hooker than he is a half.

Thats iteresting with Aitken Ali.
He has not mentioned his hammy's at all when i have spoken to him this year. That does not mean to say they havent been giving him trouble. They did come back again to haunt him last year after the warriors game. He was meant to start in the parra game (the famous one) i think but did his hammy again while training for it.
I hope he recovers enough before the end of the year so he gets a crack at first grade. I just wanna see how he goes and how they use him. It makes for interesting viewing.

If he does get fit and he does crack first grade then we won't have to buy a 5/8th.

You never know... Look at Birds jnr record and how well he played in PL and how many Birdy fans are there around here?

I think whether we do go after a 5/8 or not will give us an idea with what they are gonna do with Russ. If we dont i think its a safe bet that they are going to groom him for the job. If we do (as much as i hate to say it) he may have an uncertain future with the club.
Then there is Greg Bird. Who knows what the club will do with him. I guess we will have to wait and firstly see if he is retained after this year.

Do we really need a quality 5/8th though? That's the question.

I'd rather we get some super quality outside backs to run off Noddy's balls. Gallen has been able to play 5/8 this year because all he has to do is catch and pass. Not too hard. I reckon even Beattie'd be able to manage it actually.

As it is right now, Noddy does everything. Even if we had Fittler outside of him, Noddy would still do everything. Why waste the big bucks on a quality 5/8 when he'll be starved of the ball anyway. What a waste of money.

I think we should invest in other positions before 5/8th.

Exactly.
2002 GF Craig Wing 7
2003 GF Craig Wing 9

The difference?

Sully quite simply does not have the defence needed to play hooker.
But hey our defensive record does not reflect that.

I was thinking that way at the start of the year and now I know the answer. YES!

We need another point of attack. It's too easy for the opposition to close Kimmorley down if they know he will be getting the ball 90% of the time. People will now say that Peachey is our second point of attack but he doesn't do it enough and he can't kick the ball in general play.

We have to get a guy that can make 25 tackles and take the pressure off Noddy about 30% of the time, Peachey another 15% and that puts the defence in 2 minds all the time.

All the good teams have it.

So we call Brad Fittler's people and talk him out of retiring. The Roosters don't have the money to keep him, but maybe we do. He still has a good year left in him, so we could sign him for one year, and re-sign Peach for the same length of time. Then with Peach, Fittler and Noddy as our core we could make a very deep run into the finals if not all the way. Fittler and Kimmorley. It'd be awesome.

Heard a whisper the club is not that impressed with Aitken's progression this year. Expected him to have matured/advanced a hell of a lot more than he has.
