re St Peters JRLFC

St Peters JRLFC, obviously a now no more Newtown junior club, for some reason they entered in the North Sydney DRLFC Grade comp in 1954 and won both A and D grade.

Many old Norths Annual Reports list the various grade winners, club championships winners etc and 1954 St Peters [with NEWTOWN] in bold brackets always stands out. They are the only non norths club to win A grade before the merger of the NS and MW A grade comps.

Any ideas as to why a Newtown-St Peters area team would affiliated with North Sydney for a season? A dummy spit by a club official over ground allocation/missing out on a plum role?

Probably long odds as to an answer, but i don't have a book about the Jets [and not sure now much the Terry Williams book would touch junior league politics nearly 60 years ago anyway!].

Someone ask granddad!

I also recall Balmain junior clubs playing in our comp in the noughties..Ryde (stones)comes to mind and another club called Sawdust..from the Balmain comp

Just on 1954, some mob called Bing & Swing won the balmain A grade back then...sorry for OT

I made some inquiries with a few "older" Newtown people that I know that were around and involved in the juniors at the time.

They have advised that St Peters A Grade defecting and playing in the North Sydney comp in 1954 may have related to some dispute that the Newtown Juniors were having with the Newtown Senior club at the time.

If more information comes to light, I will pass it on!

I'm fairly sure that St Peters also played in the Souths Juniors comp in the early 2000's.

thank you bluebag 43, and off topic i note that as both max whitehead and now speechley have departed 'the field' this year both our teams lost our last links with season 1943.

Yes, Mighty Bears it is very sad to think that the link to our wonderful history the famous 1943 Grand Final is now broken with the passing of those wonderful gentlemen.

I also sincerely hope that your mighty club the Bears will one day be readmitted to "the Show" and be based on the Central Coast.

I look forward to our 3rd game against you guys this year, so I can make the journey to the picturesque North Sydney Oval.

Both Norths & Newtown deserve to be a part of the NRL.

It must have only been the A grade that went to Norths? The younger ages were in the Newton comp in the 70s.
