A little dishonest Coleman, Real Madrid were away. Great result though.

Zaragoza demolish Real Madrid 6-1 in Cup semi-final

ZARAGOZA, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Diego Milito smashed in four goals as Real Zaragoza continued their devastating form in the King's Cup with a 6-1 demolition of Real Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.

The inspired Argentine helped himself to a hat-trick in less than 20 first-half minutes at La Romareda as Zaragoza inflicted one of the heaviest defeats on a sorry-looking Real Madrid.

Although Real pulled a goal back to make it 3-1 before the break, Milito scored his fourth 10 minutes after halftime to the delight of the home crowd.

Milito's strike partner Ewerthon also got in on the act when he got his side's fifth soon after and the Brazilian completed the rout with a wonderful half volley seven minutes from time.

Zaragoza, who smashed four goals past Betis in 12 first-half minutes in their 4-3 league win at the weekend and beat Barcelona 5-4 on aggregate in the last round, were left with one foot in the final of a competition they have won twice in the last five years.

'I'm delighted, it was a fantastic victory,' Milito told reporters. 'It was a unique night for me.'

Zaragoza coach Victor Munoz was unable to contain his satisfaction at his team's performance.

'We bordered on perfection out there tonight,' he said. 'The tie is not over yet but we've taken a magnificent step towards the final.'

The home side took control from the first whistle with the in-form Cani orchestrating the midfield and stretching the Real defence as he threaded a series of neat passes through to Milito and Ewerthon.

It came as little surprise when the two front men combined to carve open the Real defence in the 15th minute.

Former Borussia Dortmund player Ewerthon scorched past Ivan Helguera on the right, darted into the area and cut the ball back to Milito who lashed home past a helpless Iker Casillas.

Seven minutes later, the Argentine struck again. This time he stole a march on Roberto Carlos after a quick throw-in, cut inside a despairing Sergio Ramos and beat Casillas at the near post with a sharp finish with the outside of his foot.

Real were still reeling from the blow when the former Genoa player helped himself to his third, taking advantage of some slack marking to head home in the 34th minute.

Just as Real looked as though they were about to fold completely, they pulled one back from a cleverly worked set piece.

Brazilian forward Julio Baptista powered a header past former Real keeper Cesar after David Beckham had chipped a free kick into the area.

Zaragoza should have restored their advantage before the break, but Casillas produced a brilliant point-blank save to stop a sharp shot from midfielder Oscar after he had got behind the Real defence.

The capacity crowd did not have to wait long for the fourth, however, and inevitably the goal came from Milito when he outjumped the passive Real defence to head home from a corner 10 minutes into the second half.

Ewerthon joined in the fun five minutes later when he drilled under Casillas after steaming past the beleaguered Real centre backs to meet a fine through ball from Cani.

The Brazilian completed the rout with the most spectacular goal of the night when he sent a swerving half-volley looping over a distraught Casillas.

Espanyol host Deportivo Coruna in the first leg of the other semi-final on Thursday.

Tbh, as much as I'd like to bag Madrid and though I agree they were hopeless towards the end of 2005, so far this calendar year in La Liga they've been awesome. Probably only second to Juve in terms of domestic league form amongst the big european clubs atm (considering barca's loss last weekend, chelsea's run of draws, plus bayern's long winter break).

If you wanna give it to one of the big clubs right now, the best target is probably AC Milan (or Arsenal, if you consider a side that's never won the european cup a big club).

I mentioned it...

I wasn't happy to see it though either :D

It's going to be a real interesting battle over 2 legs. Both teams have had 'indifferent' season to what they are used to.

Fair chances there will be a few goals in both games. I'm glad Toure and Eboue are back from Ivory Coast duty as they made a big difference on the weekend. Jens has been great too. I just hope we don't go to Spain and let them play and try and contain looking for the draw and maybe sneak an away goal. Would be a fatal mistake. They need to take it to them and make Madrid think twice about streaming foward in attack.

Hope Van Persie is back on deck to start and a few others lift their game on recent outings.

Going to be very interesting and it really is a toss of the coin.

This game (Real vs Arsenal) is ESPN's first live game of the next stages btw. Be 6.45am next Thursday morning I think.

dam.... i dont get to work till 7:45..... so i will only be able to watch the 2nd half...

By the way according to SBS:

Wed 22nd UEFA Champions League
Rd 16 First Leg REAL MADRID v ARSENAL 6:30am - 8:45am

Just on Arsenal Macca, to me they have changed the way they play..... they are using long balls more often instead of their patient sublime passing..... Adebayor looks good up front but the combination with Henry hasnt worked yet... an example of this was when Henry tried to find Adebayor on the wing in the Liverpool game but a miss communication saw the ball go into touch..... Madrid are sort of goign through the same thing as Arsenal, they have a lot of new players in their squad such as Baptista, Robinho, Cicinho etc and they can be hot and cold....

By the way, Melbourne are going to beat parra again in the trial..... even though trials dont mean anything......

2-1 Madrid in the first leg for mine...
2-1 Arsenal second leg..... Arsenal win on penalties 4-2

Re style of play... This has been bought about by teams pressing more and not allowing time to play that quick flowing passing game they had developed. And the signing of Big Ad was a result of this. Gilbertos distribution is too slow and part of the reason for our midfield being poor lately.

Don't ya hate that when SBS shows the same game as ESPN!!!

Not fussed about the trials either (league). And it's another well below strength side for Parra. Apparently they will send out most the guns in the game in Port Macquaire. Which I'm pleased about as I will be at that one seing it's in my backyard :D

Kudos to Arsenal, I didn't think they could win this tie, but they played all over Madrid.

Was a big win weasel.

Tactics were spot on. It hasn't worked in the premiership cause they get closed down more and don't have the space. But this morning the system of 5 in midfield with Reyes and Ljungberg pushing forward to support Henry exposed Madrid so many times. Could have been a bigger margin too...

Fabregas was brilliant. Only 18, he has such a big future. Reyes had a blinder too. The young defence really stood up. It was an all round great performance and one that will go down as one of Arsenals best European wins.

Been grinning all day
