Rebuilding

Rebuilding starts with the spine. Throw the bank at quality 1, 7 & 9. (I'm a Widdop fan and with the right players around him, and the right coach, he'll be fine). Of the rest, keep Frizz and play moneyball with the rest. That probably means we let Dugan, Nightingale & Thompson go and replace them with juniors. (We have a good Cutters team and good under 20's). As for the rest we keep them but only at the right price, or, replace them with juniors or cheapies.

But as a lot on here have said it is all for nought if we don't get a decent coach. With McGregor coaching we could have the Qld state of origin team and still struggle to make the eight.

I agree we need a complete over haul of our spine, however we can't do much until 2018.
Our recruitment has put us in a situation where around 70% of our current squad are contracted until the end of 2017. Unless they leave voluntarily, we can't put them on the market as we would be responsible for all or part of their contract amount.
If our finances are that bad, and we've already been told we are nearly over the 2nd tier cap already, we have to do with what we have until then (2018).
Looks like a very lean 2017!

First time poster here. I am over the same shit every single week. Been a dragons fan for nearly 20 years now and to be honest for the first time ever I'm thinking of watching the Sharks games for the rest of the season instead, mainly coz my 2 bros go for them and if the dragons are gonna suck then at least I'd like my bros to be happy with a trophy, plus the sharks games are a helluva lot more exciting to watch. I just don't think that anything will change at the dragons for 3+ years and that's so disappointing.

Hello Marty , in 20 years you have experienced the good and the bad . I just want the Dragons to go out there and play with some heart , and play with a will to win , that seems to be missing this year . Watching Newcastle play today really hit that home , coming last they nearly beat the storm . They play for the full 80 minutes for that jersey they had on . I don't think that anyone of their fans left that ground today feeling disappointed in the sides performance , because they knew that their team had given their all . Let's hope that the Dragons can do the same .

G'day Gareth. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Very hard to watch a team that doesn't really look like they want to be out there. It's like watching 13 x Aaron Woods' running around the paddock.

We'll put , the trouble is that all of those little Aaron Woods are tripping over themselves .

Browny is doing an excellent job with Newcastle, he knew what he was in for before he started, he has backed himself, and has made huge progress in a short amount of time, he made it clear to all the fans that their juniors are the future, and you can see that the players have alot of respect for him, he also has not hesitated to drop a player if their not performing, and has made plenty of positional changes to get each player in their correct position, all the attributes of a good coach, good luck to him, i hope he has lots of success with them. Hey Mary, maybe you should read this and you might learn something.

Good post and enjoyed reading the comments.

The one to go is Josh Dugan. Said it on another post. $700k a year and faded to ordinary. Only worth $300k tops. He consistently makes boo boo plays like being pushed out, poor passing, lack of top end speed. Does make some good bargy runs and tackles well but so do other regular 1st graders from across all clubs.

I believe Duges to center followed by paycut say 400k when contract expires 2017. Which is a decent centers wage. 2 years extension max.

I would swap out the whole team for a packet of burger rings if i thought that it actually had 22 in the packet

I have been a big Widdop supporter but have to say I am alarmed this year at the level of his decline.

I do believe he reads the game well and his defensive work has been great (save the Hurrell tackle) and he has stopped an incredible amount of tries being scored on Lafai's side due to Lafai's shocking defensive reads.

Not sure he will be a good FB although he does clean up a lot of the dirty stuff in our in goal.

If we can do anything (other than sack Mary) to save his career I would certainly support that.

I have said for ages Widdop at full back but as Gould said he plays to instructions and there lies the problem.
