ANOTHER FLASH BACK FROM MY RECORDS..
This article by Ernie Christensen, regarded by many as the greatest League journo of his era, was published in the Sydney "Sun" in February 1962.
It sets out what it cost Parramatta to sign St George premiership winning half back Bobby Bugden to a five year contract.
He was set to earn $14,500 over five years.......Some of the games top players would be getting that A game - and would not possess the same skills level, in my opinion, as Bob.
I ran into Bob at a SOO function in Brisbane in 2005. He looked very fit, and told me he was still playing touch football. He would have been close to 70 years of age...
BUGDEN FIGURES STAGGER PLAYERS
By E.E. Christensen
Bobby Bugdens terms to play with Parramatta have set a new record for Australian Rugby League. He could earn 7,250 pounds ($14500) dollars over the next five seasons.
The total cost of Bugden to the Parramatta club eclipses that for Brian Hambly.
Record League terms
Players in other Clubs have been staggered to learn that Bugden will be paid 1,000 pounds a season retainer ($2000) and twenty five pounds ($50) a match.
This means he could earn 1450 pounds ($2900) if he plays the full number of 18 matches.
His terms are slightly below those of Hambly for each season. Hambly is getting 1,250 pounds ($2500) and 25 pounds ($50) a match.
Bugden is signed for five years, a long period for a player of 26.
