Recruitment for 2005

With the June 30 Anti Tampering deadline coming up I was thinking whether the Wests Tigers would be a major player in recruitment over the next few months.

With the following players already at the club :

Fullback - Hodgson, Greally

Wingers - Moodie, Miles, Richards, Covell, Duffy, Collis

Centre - Elford, Fitzhenry, Halatau, Wilson, Harrison, Viane

Halves - Marshall, Prince, Kerr, Reynolds, Buettner, Branaghan

Back Rowers - Sattler, O'Neill, Graham, Galea, Viane, Harrison, Wilson, Covell, Fulton, Halatau, Heighnington

Front Rowers - Skandalis, Payten, Gibbs, Laffranchi, Lima, Small, Simpkins, Patterson, ? (Magpies front rower, name doesnt come to me at the moment)

Hooker - Mears, Senter, Farah, De Gois

Add other youngsters coming through the ranks in JF and SGB.

I don't really think we are going to heavily recruit for next year. I feel we will only recruit 3-5 players for next year. The good nursery of youngsters already in the team or in PL seem like that they are going to carry this team over the next few years.

IMO the positions we need to add players to are :

Winger : depending on whether Moodie or Miles will be with us next year + Covell been groomed for the forwards/off contract
Possible Targets : Joel Monaghan, Scott Donald, Amos Roberts

Front Rower : need to add some size. Laffranchi, Gibbs and Lima are more suited to the backrow.
Possible Targets : Ashton Sims, Justin Poore, Luke Davico, Paul Stringer, Matt Parsons, Frank Pritchard, Martin Lang (close friend of Sattler)

This might all change though depending on who will be released or who might retire.

What is everyone else thoughts ?

It`s been rumoured that we`re chasing Joel Monaghan. If we got him he`d be a great buy as he is potentially an international centre, winger. However as much as i`d like it to happen i`m not overly confident he`d come to us.Other than that it`s obvious we do need to add a bit of size in the forwards. With that being the case i`ve wrote before that I believe Frank Pritchard would be an ideal target as he is big, strong and potentially the most powerfull ball runner in the game.I feel if we somehow got them two it`s all we would need to be a premiership force, however other talented big men eg. Carl Webb,Ashton Simms and Paul Stringer to name a few would be valuable!

Our juniors would be the envy of many clubs .. tim sheens isn't dumb, he spent well in the last off season, and i'm sure he will again .. common sense says that he'll strengthen positions that need improvement, get experience and maturity to help the younger blokes achieve 1st grade ambitions, and thus build on the clubs culture and foundations. We've got a good balance of maturity and talent .. sheens will find a balance.

How about Matthew Head? he's off contract. would be pretty cheap, great talent with a big future. Mongahan would be a great winger/center, as would Scott Donald. Lang is retiring at the end of the year, Davico's too old and Poore is more of a backrower. Pritchard would be great, as would Sims.

I think our off contract players out of that are:

Moodie: up to him. i'm sure sheens will keep him if he wants to stay - goes good.

Miles: release. always gives 100% but hasn't scored enough tries.

Covell: keep. young and still improving - good for depth. i believe he will be targetted by a team without a goal kicker.

Harrison: keep - great talent.

Buettner: release

Heighnington: keep. has impressed in limited 1st grade experiences.

Skandalis: keep - a must.

Mears: getting on but is playing well (see last week). farah is the heir apparent and deserves his chance however i think sheens may keep one of mearsie and senter for next year. not both.

Senter: see above.

Frees up a bit of money. Aston Sims - yes please, he is an animal.

I read that we are going to be quite in the recruitment area this season, maybe just looking at one or maybe 2 more players. That depended on which players we kept that are coming off contract! :-k

We definitely need a prop. Sims is probably the best available thats realistic for us to chase.

A good Centre/winger would be good as well. I'd love to see Donald at the club.

Orford of course would be amazing but I don't think he'll come to the Tigers.

can people stop tossing Martin Lang's name around! If he did decide to stay on I really would not see him leaving the premiers - and his father.

I would go for Head or Orford depending on price however its not a priority. Our priorities I think should be two forwards , a winger and then a half.

In my opinion they should look to sign\resign

2 Wingers: Moodie, Miles, Utai, Monagham, Donald
3 Forwards: Skandallis, Ashton Sims, Justin Poore, Luke Davico, Paul Stringer, Matt Parsons, Frank Pritchard, Mick Vella, Glenn Morrison - ETC

I really think they need to go into the season with 3 wingers especially when you have Richards. so if they resign Moodie they should really go for Utai - Monagham or Donald. And if that fails then I guess they are forced to resign Donald.

I think they need to sign 3 forwards including Skandallis. So basically I think resigining Skandallis and signing two players (probably 1 prop and 1 backrower) and the Tigers would be a much bigger more physical side.

After all that is done there is only 2 halves I would really consider and thats head and orford. And realistically I think Heads the only one they could look at otherwise you would be blowing more money than we need to spend.

If you couldnt get Head, id forget the whole halves idea and play with what we got.

Sims isn't off contract at the Dragons. He still has a year to go. The Dragons are trying to extend his contract through negotiations at the moment. This may of confused a few people.

I cant see us making a move for any half unless he's used a cover in PL. We have:

Prince - Origin half
Marshall - young gun

then:
Kerr
Branaghan
Roberts

Now to me, that doesnt look like a club who needs to go recruit halves.

I agree,I don`t think it`s much point spending up on any halves when the ones we have are doing fine and will be even better with a few more genuine line breakers around them!

The halves we have are 5/8s (Marshall, Prince). We need a creative half to put those backs we are looking at signing over the line
