Well, I'm going to put forward an opinion here... about retentions.
Following this week's announcement, I understand the following 2004 first grade eels players are coming off contract:
Grothe (option?), Hopkins, Kativerata, Kaufusi, Langi, Muspratt, Pearson, Peek, Prince, Stapleton (apparently?), Thorman (option?), Webster
I expect both Pearson and Peek to retire (didn't Peek considered this at end of last season?).
I hope [-o< we re-sign Stapleton and tie up Grothe's option before 30 June, as they've both been good value this year. Langi has done a good job when called upon, so I'd try and clinch him for another year at the same price too.
And I believe Thorman is keen and fairly cheap, so I'd extend him the chance to develop further with us as well. Hopkins hasn't had the happiest of years, but we have seen his commitment and his potential last season. I think he's worth extending an offer to too.
As for the others... they are unlikely to be priorities, especially when there may be younger players who are yet to play first grade (Cordoba, T/B Smith, etc) that the Eels would like to keep. I'm yet to be convinced about Muspratt's value, but have not seen any PL games this year to judge. Same goes for Jeremiah Pai - hasn't seem to have made an impact on our firsts squad.
It's a shame to go through this annual process, but it's a fact of football. And now if we can spend Jamie's contract money, and (maybe) dip into that of a "prominent player" supposedly leaving us, we can chase some guys in addition to Riddell that can add some value to the side in 2005? To be at the top in terms of class, we only need a few more in my opinion - a centre, one forward, and one half-type player
