Ref and Bunker Decisions

Annesley in his weekly pisstake wrap up saying that the massive reduction in penalties and 6 agains is not about the referees adjudicating differently; rather it's because of the quality of the games and the teams that played last weekend.

Honestly, I'm in admiration of the bloke. There's no way I could have stood there and said that with a straight face.

To be fair, he's 100% correct. The poorer quality teams get penalised for shit that the good teams get away with, so when the poorer quality teams aren't there, there's no need to enforce those rules.

There was a late hit that was a sin bin 3 weeks ago. Just a penalty now, That is refs changing how they rule on stuff

In the Panthers/roosters game I think I'm right on saying there wasn't one penalty for high contact which I find amazing

Fish got hit in the head a few times, mostly slaps tho, there was high contact on turuva too, none of it called out, there was also a good one on To'o as he was going over for a try,
Don't we have another thread here about wobbo's whingers??? how did it spill over onto this thread

Yep correct. Apart from Watson's crusher, every other penalty was for flops, escorts, offsides.

It was typical good side refereeing where they just let them get away with murder.

The whistle wasn't "put away" when penrith were dominant in the first half, they got 5-1 or something like that penalties/6 agains in that period from memory so one could just as easily say that he was responsible there too. The point being that these swings in calls favouring one side happen every game

On the forward pass I agree with you, he made a judgement call at the time. It is what it is. As a roosters fan it's annoying he was right there and still wrong but you can cop those knowing over a season it should even out. Within the game itself, the core issue for us wasn't that call, it was the rubbish first half.

The Keary one was grossly inconsistent with the rest of the season. That's not Klein, that's the bunker.

Then you have the JFH "crusher". That probably is consistent as a penalty but shouldn't be IMO. When you back in to a tackle like that the defender should get more leeway.
The Roosters received 5 penalties/restarts in the short period they were on top and scored their points. They also benefitted from the non-sinbinning of Keary in this period. There is no way they weren’t game managed to get them back in the game. Overall the there were 8 penalties/restarts to each side.

In the initial period of dominance by penrith it was 5-1 their way.

Assume you have no problem with that though?

Penrith also benefitted from the incorrect forward pass ruling and no penalty for teddy being tripped.

See how this works?

Looking at it from as neutral viewpoint as I can, (difficult obviously, so if a real neutral was to weigh in I'd be keen to see their thoughts)

The first 20 our ruck dominance was off the charts, you guys were absolutely bullied and were holding down trying to slow it down, even with the slow play the balls we were driving defenders back every tackle. If Klown wanted to he could have justified a heap more restarts than were given.

Then the Keary professional foul. Should have been a penalty try. Keary was behind Henry when he offended, yet was the one to ground it in the ingoal. Based on other similar rulings it was as clear cut as it gets. Given it was 24 - 0 there was no way they were giving it to make it 30, so I'm Ok with it. The no sin bin though, worst sympathy call of the year. The mental gymnastics by the bunker to justify were laughable. If Keary was binned you get 50'ed, no doubt.

Then all of a sudden although we are still winning the ruck the restarts are reversed for "reasons" f**ked if I know what they were for, maybe you can help? You get 2 trys and I figured a third which was stopped due to a dud but understandable call. I figured you would get more calls to get the 3rd, but for some reason the whistle went away at that point.

At 24 - 10 we just grind it out from there, no need to go nuts as you aren't getting close without the leg ups so we shift back down to first, score once more for shits and gigs and move on to next week.

In summary anyone with eyes would admit you were bullied in the ruck aside from the dick riding period. You would expect from that our average ptb speed was way superior. Turns out it's the other way around. Kind of shows who was holding down and who wasn't. If the ruck was policed correctly all game with no eye for the scoreboard you would have been 70'ed.

Forgot to mention, JFH crusher was soft. Thats how it's policed, so nothing to see here. Do agree it's a rule than needs modifying.

Turuva trip should have been a penalty, but I could find another 5 or 6 things that could have been penalties either way, so hardly significant.

I'm not denying we were bullied, I've been very vocal on that point.

What i don't accept is the notion that the penrith dominance led to the one sided penalty count but that the opposite is true when we were on top.

Our bench, Whyte and Wong in particular, were sensational. Why the whistle went away after the denied try who would know, probably just a case of penrith recovering and solidifying their position.

Also the play the ball speed was essentially the same, not sure where you got your info from. You would then expect the penalty count to be even which it was. If one drilled down in to it I think you would find your speed was superior in the first half and ours in the 2nd.

Don't know about anyone else but I enjoy supporters of the top teams discussing why they didn't get all the refereeing decisions go their way when they play each other like normally occurs when they play a lower ranked side.

Ass handed to you, 1st half was just getting purely dominated
