Refereeing

I know it's very early in the round, and I only watched one game closely last night (Broncos bs Cowboys for those wondering), but I just wanted to mention that if the refereeing continues at the standard set last night, we're in for a wonderful year.

How good was it to see players actually playing the ball where they were tackled? How good was it to see players actually behind the line for kick-offs and drop outs? How good was it to see the referees back themselves and make a call instead of sending it upstairs? How good was it seeing Bowen's try disallowed, something that probably would have been awarded in years gone by!

I honestly cannot think of a single call the referees got wrong (the touch judge who came in however - absolute shocker), they even got the really tough calls correct.

Long may it continue.

I was at the Broncos game (bias aside) it "looked" like Gillett's no try was in-fact a try, live.

Besides that I thought it was a fantastic turnaround by the refs and I hope it lasts, will make the game stronger and even better to watch. :D

I didn't see the geillet no try, however these 50/50 calls will always be around- at least they are not taking 30 replays in super slow mo to get a decision wrong....

The flow of the Rabbits v Rorters game was great....but I feel we are gunna get a load of pens for petty things....lets wait and see....

i'm sure the Raiders will be robbed in every game again though, right?

I thought the reffing last night in both games was very good. The Cooper penalty at the end I thought was pretty harsh in the Cowboys game, that 5hit happens in footy.

Apple, the Gillett no try I thought was fair enough, it deadset looked like a double movement on TV. I'm glad they didn't go benefit of the doubt to Bowen for his no try, I was waiting for them to give it but I'm glad they used their judgement correctly, I thought he knocked it on from the first angle.

Well done to the refs.

I can live with all the calls made last night, albeit the Cooper call was probably harsh. On the other hand, had the Gillett no try (right call, Gillett would have probably got there on momentum, but forced it) gone upstairs, chances are Bowen would have been penalised for his attempt at kicking the ball...

Skeepe, if you watched the other game, you would notice more offensive penalties. Do you like that? I find it nice, they are finally cracking down on moving from the mark (Campese vs Tigers last year finals).

Better make sure the scrum LOOKS good, even though it ends up at the same result anyway!

Also second referee can now be used as as decoy, have at it boys!

Judging by the Titans V Dragons thread, Skeepe may have changed his mind.

After watching the Dragons v Gold Coast match it was clear to see that the abomination that was the refereeing of Dragons matches in 2010 will be continuing again in 2011.

Early refereeing form has been pleasing. Most of the games have flowed pretty well, and there are some good calls being made out there.

I agree, and it continued in tonights games. Apart from the controversial Boyd Try which i don't agree with being allowed to be rewarded.

Looks like the poofs in pink aren't even hiding their bias towards Saints anymore.

As a referee myself, you have to laugh at some of the utter crap that comes out of some people's mouths.

You dear sir are one of the people who give me a nice smile when I'm out in the middle.

Hmm I'm not sure about the refs in the Broncos games. The ruck was very slow, and markers were constantly offside (mainly the Broncos). Needed a few more penalties earlier probably would have opened the game up a bit more.

But in saying that at least they didn't massively f**k anything up, and at least we've got Harrigan out of the video refs chair...
