Referees coaching players

Is there another code in the world where the referees actively coach the players throughout the entire game?

And then we wonder why players keep wrestling in the ruck, not playing the ball square, not marking square, not using the foot to play the ball, being offside, playing the ball off the mark etc.

The game looks like the players don't know the rules because all the responsibility for obeying them is on the referees and not on the players.

This is where all the frustration from the players and fans comes from because the majority of penalties awarded now are discretionary so when players are penalised they naturally blow up because the refs have allowed every 5/6 without penalty.

Of course we don't want a penalty-a-thon but what is the point of having rules if they are not enforced the majority of the time, players should be held responsible for how many penalties are conceded in a game not referees.

The second referee is responsible for shifting that responsibility away from players to refs.

It's ridiculous and irritating to watch. When it gets to the point refs telling players how to form a scrum. Come on ffs

Or 'Time your run' on kick offs

this is ludicrous...

refs doing this will take away the need for coaches.. this is just a ploy from the NRL to try and reduce the wages clubs spend on salaries for the blokes with the clipboards..

If the ref's don't then you end up with 40 penalties a game and everyone will love that.

Its because people give the refs so much shit for stopping play by giving penalties they feel like they need to blow as few as possible...

Then people b*tch that there arent enough penalties!!!

The abuse refs take is just getting worse, and eventually no one is going to want the job. People say "fire the current group of refs, bring in new people". What happens when you run out of new refs?? theres already a shortage in juniors.

People need to stop complaining about refereeing before the job becomes unbearable for the poor bloke; and that should start with NRL commentators, players and coaches. The media will never stop complaining, but the fuel that really sets this off amongst fans is players and coaches coming out after every game saying "this was the worst refereeing performance we have ever seen. Forget last week when we made this same speech, THIS is the worst!!"

You don't think players and coaches would catch on quick smart? The refs need the backing from the NRL to get their control back and keep it.

No. 1 player's in front of the ref, rather than a "stay out of it 8", you blow a penalty. There could be a penalty literally every play the ball.

Even the things like "moooooooooooove", hold, don't work him, don't go early, stay square etc. As a ref your taught to say something pretty much every play the ball. Players are dumb and no one likes to see a game full of penalties.

I'm not blaming the refs, they are doing the job the way they have been told to, it's the system that's broken. The NRL have been gutless for too long and enabled the players complete disregard for every basic rule in the game and made the job of the referee soo much harder than it should be. Consistency is not existent in a single game and between games because it's been facilitated that way by the NRL.

If the referees don't warn players to behave they would spend the whole game blowing penalties.

Personally, by and large I think the men in the middle strike a decent balance between letting the game flow and penalising teams that push the envelope too far.

I am with Doctor, I can't believe that people claim all the time that the refereeing is worse now than it ever was. Next week and the week after they'll tell you the same thing if they disagree with one decision. A bit of perspective is needed at times.

I only ask that both teams are refereed the same way. Earlier this season the referee in one game was coaching one side and penalising the other. The penalty count ended up at 9 v 2. It was unfair. The penalties awarded to the team that got two were for a kick that went out on the full and an accidental offside from memory. In other words they weren't "awarded" a single penalty from the referees themselves.

But I've only noticed it that once and I haven't seen it happen again.
Generally the refereeing in most matches is balanced with both sides being coached or penalised based upon their behaviour and the vast majority of decisions are correct.

With the speed of the game and fatigue effecting decisions is think they do a decent job in most respects

 Let me guess. Roosters match ? No doubt though your opinions on only one side being coached are completely unbiased.

It has gotten to the point in the last few weeks where I've noticed referees are now giving positive reinforcement to defenders doing the right thing.
"Get square at marker, Jeremy. Good work, Jeremy."
"Hand off the ball, Beau. Well done, Beau. "

It sounds like being in a kindergarten classroom.

Yeah it's flippen annoying hearing the refs telling them to get onside, use your foot, stay behind the kicker, etc etc. I would like to think they should just stop talking and start blowing penalties and hope the players would smarten up. However, I think most of the players are too dumb to smarten up to this. I mean it's round 20 and I'm still seeing muppets trying to take quick taps within 10 metres of the try line. If the players can't figure that out, then there isn't much hope for them figuring out the rest of the rules on their own

Refereeing needs to be stripped back to the art it is - using discretion and consistency in calling what THEY SEE, not yelling out what THEY WANT TO SEE.

It's by far the biggest blight on the game.

My mate Bileduct has been banging on for more than 12 months about how the two ref system is cruelling the game and creating massive confusion amongst both players and fans.

While it pains me to admit, he's right and I've been wrong in defending the two ref system.

It's becoming clearer that the two refs are not adding to the spectacle that is the game, they are detracting from it with their visibly differing interpretations of rules, the 10, strips, milking etc.

It's time to go back to one ref and at try and bring more consistency to on field decisions.

Chook.

I hate when players make a tackle, then lie in the attacker and look at the ref like they're unsure what they do next. If I was a ref I'd penalise every defender who did that . after 5 penalties they'd stop doing it and get off the tackled player.

The argument that 40 penalties would be blown is ridiculous. Players and coaches learn quickly. How many punches have we seen since gallen belted myles? The reason the players currently keep testing the refs is cos the refs are so inconsistent. I bet any of you who have played sport and tried to get one over the ref and gotten penalised have learnt pretty quickly not to keep doing it

Proudly brought to you by R. Stuart ;-)

Seriously though, you make some very good points.

You'd be correct. When I was refereeing in juniors, I can remember an A Grade game (I'd finished for the day by the time this match started) where the Referee blew more than 40 penalties in the match. I'd print what the Referees Appointments Board member said in his debrief to that referee but the language would not get around the profanity filters!

Yep. Game against Manly at the SFS. From memory, the first of only two occasions Trent Robinson felt the need to bring up questionable refereeing at the post match interview. Newcastle was the other game. Happy to be wrong here but I can't remember him whinging anywhere else.

Yeah, this irritates me so much. They tackle the guy, then lie on him and look back at the ref, waiting for him to tell them to get off. Again, they should just penalise them when they do this - would soon stop it. Problem is them continuing to do so for the entire season, when they move onto the next thing to crack down on.

Oh the coach had a whine in the presser. I guess Roosters really were hard done by.
