Knights should have been awarded vital penalty

THE NRL has conceded the Knights should have been awarded a potential game-tying penalty in the closing stages of their 20-12 loss to the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium last Saturday.NRL referees co-coach Stuart Raper said Warriors prop Sam Rapira should have been penalised for stripping the ball from opposite number Richie Fa’aoso in a tackle in the 74th minute.

Referee Adam Devcich instead ruled Fa’aoso lost the ball and gave the Warriors a scrum feed.

But Raper was ‘‘comfortable’’ with the decision by video referee Chris Ward to award Warriors skipper Simon Mannering a try in the 63rd minute, despite Newcastle protests that the ball brushed the wrist of Warriors centre Joel Moon in the lead-up.

Mannering’s try levelled the scores at 12-12 then James Maloney converted to give the home side a 14-12 lead which they did not relinquish.

The Warriors led 14-12 when Fa’aoso had the ball stripped 15 metres out from their line almost directly in front of the posts.

It was the first tackle directly from a tap restart after the Knights had turned down a 35-metre kick at goal, which had been the result of a stripping penalty against Warriors pivot Feleti Mateo on Knights forward Zane Tetevano.

Knights captain Kurt Gidley has since second-guessed his decision not to take the kick after the penalty against Mateo.

The former Parramatta Eel scored a converted try in the 77th minute to stretch the Warriors’ lead to a match-winning eight points.

‘‘There was a strip. Someone punched it out so we missed that,’’ Raper said.

‘‘We just missed it at the last moment. He [Rapira] got a sneaky one in on us.’’

Raper said Devcich was in no danger of being dropped from the NRL this weekend.

‘‘These guys make thousands of calls a game, and sometimes they miss a couple here or there,’’ he said.

‘‘We start dropping blokes for small errors like that and [Raper’s refereeing co-coach] Billy Harrigan will be making a comeback, because we won’t have enough referees.

‘‘You’ve got to be fair. Players don’t get dropped when they drop the ball or miss a tackle that leads to a try.’’

Knights coach Rick Stone believed the decision not to penalise Rapira had a major influence on the result but acknowledged some of his players also made mistakes.

‘‘That’s a big play, but you get that,’’ Stone said.

‘‘Possibly if we’d taken the kick just prior to that from the Zane penalty, it would have been all right, but when you miss those ones and their influence on a game are pretty big like that one was, that’s definitely disappointing, but everyone’s human.

‘‘I’ve got blokes who made mistakes on the weekend who haven’t made many mistakes for us in the last few weeks, so you just wear it and move on and understand it’s hopefully just a little bit of a glitch.’’

After speaking yesterday with video referee Russell Smith, who reviewed the game but did not officiate on it, Raper was convinced the ball did not come into contact with Moon’s arm in the in-goal scramble leading up to Mannering’s try.

Raper said they synchronised replays from several camera angles of the moment Moon and Knights winger Aku Uate came together contesting Shaun Johnson’s grubber kick.

‘‘The Mannering try, we’re comfortable with. We didn’t see a deflection,’’ Raper said.

Stone said he had no problem with the Mannering try.

‘‘I thought it was a try. I didn’t see any extra rotation of the ball, when Moon possibly could have touched it,’’ Stone said.

Stone was certain Gidley would have taken the kick had Rapira been penalised.

‘‘Look, you live and die by your decisions, and we ended up making a few errors after that and allowed them to score another try,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m disappointed about the loss, and I know the boys are, but I’m not making it the end of the world like a lot of people are. We’ve got three games to prove ourselves and get ourselves in the eight under our own steam, so we know what we’ve got to do.’’

Thanks Stuey! Much appreciated. Now, what are you going to do about it?

Also, they didn't see a deflection off Moon for the Mannering try? Must be watching a different game to me then...

Just out of curiosity, is this the first time that the refs have mistook a strip for a dropped ball or a dropped ball for a strip? Or is this a frequent occurrence...say, weekly?

Yep this kind of shit happens ALL the time and I am sorry for the teams that feel the brunt of this.

Last thing you want is ppl like Paul Gallen whinging at every oppourtunity about refs bad calls etc. It's easy to blame everyone but yourself when you lose...

Was ordinary but if we had of been good enough we would have won, sadly we weren't.

Exactly.

The best team on the day won.

Or, perhaps better put, the Knights were worse in the 2nd half than the Warriors were in the 1st.

The strip is the only call I have a problem with, but it happens. I would almost call it us getting what we deserved after that shocking decision to refuse the 2 moments earlier. The Mannering try was probably fine, just unlucky that Gidley couldn't get to the ball, I'm pretty sure he would have.

Anyway Satuday night was nothing compared to the first Warriors game....:sarcasm:

Mannering try was clearly a try. Even Stone concedes that one without hesitation

Yeah I can live with the Mannering try...watching live I thought it came off Uate's shoulder, saw it again on Sunday and thought it came off Moon...says it all really! Having done a fair bit of reffing myself, when it is so hard to tell either way, everyone's gotta wear the decision (which as people have said - usually goes with the attacking team), whichever way it goes. Oh well thats footy.

At first look, I thought it had clearly come off Moon as well as Uate. But the more you looked at it, the more obvious it was.

They got a close call wrong (i'm pretty sure Moon did get a touch to it), but as others have said, we still had plenty of opportunity to win/level the match at the very least. Unfortunate, but it happens. It was bodys in motion, fingertip type stuff... the video evidence wasn't really conclusive. As i said, pretty sure he did get a touch on it, but i wouldn't be overly surprised if clearer video evidence was made available that showed he didn't touch it, either.

We weren't composed enough to take it, not going to blame the refs for that. The strip was also unfortunate... but shit happens.

What was the penalty that we got the ball off anyway? Can't remember but I remember thinking it was a bit rough against the Warriors.

Only gripes I had were the McManus and Gidley 'knock ons'.

Are you talking about the one where Gidley declined to have the shot at goal?

If so, Fa'aoso dropped it cold but Warriors were penalised for a strip.

Then a few plays later Fa'aoso was stripped but was called dropped ball.

Swings and roundabouts, we had plenty of chances to win that game.
The refs didn't decide anything, our lack of composure did.
