Refs all over the place

I grew up in a rugby league area, the team I played for created many NRL and International level players, its in my blood.

One thing I noticed in the Titans match was De Belin got sin binned for slowing the play down which fully support but need clearer definition. I would change the rule to clarify a 10 metre zone and deliberate infringement is 10 in the bin ... not 5 as some commentators are saying ... it needs to hurt.

More importantly Ash Taylor tripping is just not on ..... when I was playing if you did that you would get the snot bashed out of you and then the ref would send you off after that not 10 minutes yet refs hide behind putting players on report.

They really need to clarify the send off and sin bin rules, in my view any dangerous deliberate foul play like tripping should be an automatic send off.

As for the large penalty count we are seeing its mainly due to the new definition of the play the ball but these guys are full time professionals, its up to them to adjust and the refs to sin bin repeat offenders. You can argue the rule change but if they can not adjust to a rule change that tells you there are bigger problems ..... they need to respect the rules even if they suck or not !

They missed the boat with regards to tripping by allowing Josh Reynolds - who's done it more than once, to get away with it. I agree, it needs to be an automatic send off. I would also agree that anything worthy of being put on report, should be worthy of time in the bin.

I was always confused by what was so heinous about a trip that it deserved an instant red back in the old days? I saw much more dangerous things go far less severely punished, but tripping was seen as one of the worse acts you could commit. The crime didn't seem to fit the punishment?

because its completely against the spirit of the game, its basically a way of effecting a tackle without putting your body on the line.

A trip is a deliberate act of foul play just like a deliberate high tackle. It's also a coward act.

What it used to be is a deliberate penalty = professional foul and sin bin, while deliberate foul play = send off. Now it is neither.

Who cares how much Buzz and the other idiot journos/commentators whinge about penalties. Blow 50 penalties a game if coaches and teams want to cheat the rules and stand offside, play the ball wrong and deliberately hold down in the 10m. Otherwise, apart from foul play, we may as well take all rules out of the game.

Probably what annoys me most that I've heard several times now is 'why is Origin so good? Because it's a free flowing game with no penalties' - that is completely idiotic. 'Free flowing' does not mean 15 second rucks and players taken out left right and centre because the refs are afraid to blow penalties because it's 'origin'.

Getting tripped is hardly the worst thing that can happen to a player on the paddock.

Neither is being held down after a line break but there's a reason it's a sin bin just like there was a reason a trip was a send off.

As it is now where a trip is just a penalty and a fine, why not trip? If I was a coach I'd tell my players to trip if it could possibly save a try like that Reynolds trip did a few years ago against the dragons.

I was talking more about head high and spear tackles. I think Young would have preferred Inglis to trip him rather than attack him with his shoulder up around the head, even though the tackle was deemed legal at the time.

Yes but deliberate high tackles and spear tackles were always send offs too. If you had a swinging arm and closed fist - off.

I'd prefer to get 'shoulder charged' in the chest than whacked and driven under the ribs any day.

The point is what is deemed a send-off/sin-bin is not decided by what the players would prefer not to happen.

I find that tackle ploy where the third guy in circles around like a hyena and grabs the legs when two other massive units are bear hugging is far more of a coward act than a trip. One of the ugliest sights in the NRL at the moment. It is more deliberate than a trip as well because the coaches have obviously been coaching it as the way to tackle.

Well it's not actually because it is not foul play and it is not going to cause injury if done right. A cannonball tackle is yes, but if all you are doing is grabbing the legs so they fall over there's no problem.

Let me guess... It's Bellamy's fault?
