how in the hell is this guy not an All Black yet...

they give a jersey to the likes of Ben Smith & Rudi Wulf... but this bloke has been titanic for Northland & The Blues over the last couple of seasons.

Now hes playing at centre he might finally get some dues... i wont hold my breath though... the selectors seem to ignore anyone that comes from Northland.... just ask Norm Berryman.

I take it you're a Northland man.

I agree with you though. I hope he gets a fair go unlike Anthony Tuitavake and I thought that Rudi Wulf wasn't too bad tbh. There's been much worse than him in an All Black jumper.

Berryman should never have been an All Black... he was to much of a flake... had all the talent in the world but the attitude of a schoolboy... he was only selected due to public opinion.. had he applied himself he might have been as good as he thought he was.

Ranger has the goods all right, but at centre he has to get past Smith and Kahui... he wont be doing that for a couple of years... Smith may go offshore after the world cup, which might make ranger no 2 behind Kahui... assuming the likes of Fruen dont surpass hum.

Kahui & Toeava will be his competition as he's the cover for wing/centre. Kahui's definitely no certainty either... he's got massive injury problems.

Smith is a pure centre.

If Ranger play's this well over the length of the season he SHOULD get a run somewhere...

mind you... looking at the Maori's games this season... i wouldn't mind playing for them after the super14.

Toeava and Ranger suffer the same problem, which unless addressed will mean Kahui gets Smith position by default... their backline reading of defence is useless. .. They can both make big tackles, but they both get beaten often as well... attack is only half the game... and at centre, the way the All Blacks play, defence is worth more than attack.... we have outstanding wingers for that.

LMFAO!! Rangers been at centre for about 3 games... 2 of those 3 games he was man of the match. how are you able to come up with an idea about his defensive awareness in those games...

and he's been OUTSTANDING as a defensive winger over the last couple of seasons for the Blues. he was easily the Blues best player last season.

so while i definitely take your point about the fact he will have to pick his defence up as a centre... i dont know how you can call him a useless...

and i wouldn't be too confident over Smith or Kahui... only 2 blokes are guaranteed AB's spots... thats McCaw & Carter.

The rest are really one poor game away from being out the door...

Because hs played centre plenty over the last couple of years and he has been beaten plenty... I didnt say he was useless i said his reading of the defence is useless.. and it is. as an attacking player he is brilliant... but he needs to be able to direct a defensive line.. and he is far away from doing that.

And thats complete bullsh*t about only 2 being "guaranteed"... Thorn, Read, Hore, Mills, Sivi, Smith are all going to have to play sh*t all year to be dropped... they are class players who have played well for the All Blacks in the past.... and who would you suggest being dropped to allow Ranger to play???

So you see him as a winger/fullback???? which is what those two play??? he would need to give up playing centre for that to happen... and you have marked down as an All Black centre.
i see him as a wing/fullback/centre otherwise known as a utility back.

Ben Smith, Toeava & Rudi Wulf have all made the all blacks as utilities... what im saying is Rene Ranger is as good if not better than those three...

So a tour squad player then?.. never gonna amount to much if he does that... Like Tamati Ellison... good at a few positions but cant nail down one specific one... with him leaving then Ranger might take his place... but unless he stays in one position and makes it his own he wont ever be a starting first string All Black.

LMFAO @ you talking down the achievement of going on an All Blacks tour.

you must be All Black legend talking down on AB's tourists.

i have no problem with Ranger not being a starter... but the point of this thread is that Ranger is just as good as other blokes who have worn the black jersey.

im just pushing for the bloke to wear the black jersey... whether its for the tri-nations or a random test on the northern tour... if the bloke can keep his form he deserves a chance.

as for being an All Black tour squad player... to say that someone who makes that doesn't amount to much is ridiculous. its an achievement of immense proportion to make that squad. i bet Tamati Ellision and his family would be rightly proud as hell of his achievement.

getting on that tour is getting a chance... im just saying if he keeps this up surely he deserves his chance.

i remember after the 03 super12... the all blacks picked a Blues utility back who was then seen as a Centre/Winger/Fullback. they had a hunch to give him a run at fullback... the bloke took his chance and hes been our fullback ever since.

being a utility is not always a curse....

Are you really that much of a simpleton??? do you know what context is??? I am sure EVERY All BLack who makes a tour squad is honoured to just be picked...

However...

You are talking up Ranger as the best prospect since Colin Meads... as a centre no less.... which he isnt even close to... If now you are saying he would be a good squad player... then yes he very well maybe... if he can keep his form up for the entire season.

you call me a simpleton?? either you cant read... or your just full of sh*t... the best prospect since Meads??

read my initial post clown... where did i give him anything close to a wrap like your making out?? i haven't said anything about his future prospects as an all black other than he deserves his chance.

all ive said is that considering the blokes who have been given an all black jersey over the past year... if Ranger can hold his form he's surely worthy of a call up.

and because he's now playing well at centre it adds another string to his bow.

" this bloke has been titanic for Northland & The Blues over the last couple of seasons"... so titanic means he is just ok does it???? or is hyperbole all you are good at?

And now his name suppression has been removed there wont be the calls for him to be picked for the All Blacks this year... or next... if he keeps his nose clean he might make it in 2012

interesting... i thought this was already out... its been around for awhile... i heard about it over Christmas ... i didn't realise he was granted name suppression... pretty stink if he was granted name suppression because of his profile.

he wont be able to be an All Black is he's in prison...

He would have got suppression because of his profile.. not because he was a sportsman, but because he was a well know sportsman in the area...

And its doubtful he will go to prison, probably diversion IF its his first offence... he will argue that a conviction would hurt his future employment oportunities.... However its a BIG "if" in regards to past indiscretions... from memory they were as a kid so dont count.
