Retention Record

Is there a problem w our player (possibly coach) retention record under Waldron. Has his history of being from the trade focussed AFL compromised our ability to successfully negotiate with in the NRL to keep our players. I cant remember us keeping (Johnson aside) anyone since the june 30 deadline has been abolished.

We hear about players wanting to go home etc, but really, there must be other factors. Do player managers dictate to us, the Bellamy thing is annoying and on the footsteps of Folau it may be another failure at keeping a high profile Storm figure.

I find his attitude blaise at times and it doesnt instill alot of confidence

To be honest, i've got that 'vibe' as well, Molly.

Come on, Wally. If you ever get one retention, make it Craig's.

I think Melbourne's problem will always be players leaving "home" to play there. It is therefore natural they want to move back to their home area when they make it in 1st grade.

Putting Bellamy's signing aside, i think you're being a bit hard on Waldron. We've been the most successful side over the last couple of years and could very well have more over the next couple at least, but with that success comes the issue of player retention which is ineviatble. It's not just the Storm it's every team it happens to, just ask the Bulldogs a few years ago and the Bronco's as well.

Waldron has an obligation to every single player on the list to pay them exactly what they're worth and not a cent more. What are we meant to do if a player wants a certain amount and we haven't got it or they're just not worth it? Pay them anyway? We just couldn't match what Matt King was getting offered, same with Ben Cross, as for Newton we just didn't have the money to keep him unfortunately. I'm sure none of those players wanted to leave, but if the cupboard is bare then they have no choice. That's hardly Waldron's fault.

You've also got to remember the stars we have on our list and who we have to re-sign over the next few years. Of course we won't be able to keep all of them due to the salary cap but again that's not Waldron's fault. We could very well lose Lima or Blair which would be big losses but by losing one of them it could be the difference between losing or re-signing someone like Cameron Smith or Cooper Cronk down the track. We'll need money for them and we have to find it somewhere.

We also have to factor in the amount of rep players we have which makes it all the more harder to keep players because those appearances for NSW, QLD, Aust, NZ etc fall under our cap as well. It's a delicate balancing act trying to work with the money you've got to spend but unfortunately it's just a fact of life that you can't keep them all and players will move on from every team.

Given the fact we've been such a strong side and we have the team this year, next year and even beyond to make a serious challenge for more premierships i think is a testament to the work that Brian Waldron does and IMO he's played a massive part along with Bellamy to get us to where we are today.

The days of players like Kimmorley and Orford holding us over a barrel trying to weed every cent out of us are long gone and i for one am very happy about that.

Ignorant comment. NRL has a player retention problem in general, not the Storm. Last year about 10 players were traded during the trade period in the entire AFL. 10 out of over 700 players. So I don't know what you're getting at there with Waldron. Massive turnover in players in League compared to AFL.

Ignorant comment? And you are comparing the AFL to the NRL, two entirely different systems. Given the AFL doesnt have free agnecy, where is this comparison even remotely relevant?

Seriously, think before you post.

Yep, I agree with your points, I was not including the salary cap movements in my comments though as they are inevitable, I think though in most cases where we have really wanted to keep someone (salary cap issues aside) I am sure we are not on the right side of 50%.

I agree that we dont want o get into a player auction, and the lure of playing with such a strong club should have players knocking down the doors to play here, I just wonder why that is not the case. Is Melbourne that bad a place to live in an NRL world, I wouldnt have thought so. We have moved family members before so surely thats not the enswer everytime, maybe Wallys doing all he can, I guess I am just saying his comments publicly do not fill you with confidence that he goes as hard as he shoud in retaining players.

Kudos for resigning Bellamy, that was a master stroke given the competition for him and will impact positively on player retention you would expect.

Given that you accuse Waldron of having an AFL style focus towards player retention I'd say it was a case of the pot n the kettle

Yes ignorant. I'll leave it at that so as not to further embarass you.
