Can someone explain how football clubs all don't make a profit though.

NRL Grants as a minimum pays for the NRL/NRLW players wages - In 2023 I understand an additional 5 million was provided to all clubs above the grant.

Football departments have a salary cap of 5 million or so and if the above is correct then all these wages are paid for as a minimum

There are costs involved in memberships ( costs of the membership packs deducted from the membership fees paid etc) and Sponsorship( cost of wining and dining the sponsor at every home game etc) - so hard to know exactly how much clubs actually make from this but they would make money from it still.

Gate takings - clubs would use this to pay for leasing the ground and any facilities they use - should still make money from this also

The NRL pay for travel and accommodation etc.

It would be good to see actual football club related financials

COEs might put clubs in debt for a few years? Plus there must be bank loan debts on other investments

A lot of clubs don’t produce public financial reports or it’s all mixed in with leagues clubs finances.
broncos are probably the best in visibility as they are a listed company.

but last year every club was profitable according to nrl on $14-$15mill grants $10mill cap. I’d expect the same this year on $12mill cap $17mill grants.

Is the football Dept cap still a thing? Haven’t heard about it for years. I wonder how the nrl police it if it does exist?
