SHARKS TO ANNOUNCE NEW COACH AT 2PM
Tuesday 26 Sep 2006 09:54
by Matthew O'Neill
The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks will be conducting a press conference at 2pm today (Tuesday, September 26) to make an announcement regarding their new NRL coach.
It's widely expected that former Canberra halfback and Roosters coach Ricky Stuart will replace Stuart Raper who was sacked last Friday.
Stuart was sensationally sacked by the Roosters prior to the final round this year as they actively pursued Wayne Bennett despite having three years remaining on his deal at the Broncons.
The Sharks have been around for 40 seasons and are yet to taste Premiership success despite competing in the 1973 and 1978 Grand Finals as well as the 1997 'Super' League Grand Final.
Stuart enjoyed a fine playing career between 1988-98 with Canberra playing in 203 first grade matches and finished his playing days with two years at Canterbury where he played 40 matches. Stuart immediately entered the coaching ranks following his retirement and coached the Bulldogs Jersey Flegg side to Premiership success in 2001. Stuart was lured across to Bondi and took the Roosters to their first Premiership in 27 years when they defeated the Warriors in the Grand Final. The Roosters went down to Penrith and Canterbury in the years following 2002 and in the last two years the Roosters have missed out on the Finals despite having a star-studded side that on paper was top four material.
The pressure will be on Stuart to deliver Cronulla that elusive Premiership and not change the culture of the Club at the same time. Chris Anderson who won Premierships with Halifax, Canterbury and Melbourne knew the culture had to be changed but was sacked when he made too many tough decisions and Stuart Raper who was happy to coach under the Shire culture couldn't deliver the results the board are hoping for.
Sharks Chief Executive Greg Pierce and Chairman Barry Pierce will announce the new Coach at 2pm, which is expected to be Stuart in the Blue Fin Restaurant area of Sharkies Leagues Club, Captain Cook Drive, Woolooware.
