RIP Tommy. He was a great rugby player and coach but he was so much more then that. He wasn't afraid to use his profile to back causes he believed in when he got behind the union movement during the introduction of work choices. He had some tough times in life. The loss of his grandson from a accident on a rugby league field would have been very difficult for him.

Interestingly when he was coach of Ipswich Jets he had a quite a bit to do with the development of a young Alan Langer. My deepest condolences go out to his family.

He was the main reason I hitched my wagon to Western Suburbs as a teenager in the mid '90s, I absolutely loved the bloke.
Stories of the gummy bite, "cattledog" and him driving a soundcar through Campbelltown riling up the locals to go out and support the mighty magpies made a lifelong Wests fan out of me.
What a legend.
VALE.

That 1996 season in review video someone uploaded to YouTube includes a news report of Tommy on the back of a truck on Queen Street drumming up support for the next Magpies home game. The coach doing it. To me he was Wests in the mid to late 90s, heart and soul of the joint.

Small, fit, tough, skillfull.
He would have dominated this season when the beef cakes are realising they are carrying too much.
