Risng Star Prospects - 2006

Who are the likely candidates?

ADELAIDE: Chris Knights looms large as the early favourite, showing good poise and skill throughout the NAB Cup. The competition generally favours midfield types, so he stands a very good chance. Darren Pfeiffer already carries senior SANFL experience into his debut year and could slot neatly into the Crow structure if required. Strong ruck prospects Ivan Maric and John Meesen could also impress.

BRISBANE: I thought Mitchell Clarke would be a gun before the draft and given enough opportunity in the top side, will surely catch the eye.

CARLTON: Expect Marc Murphy to figure prominently. He wasn't top pick for nothing and will get plenty of gametime for the embattled Blues.

COLLINGWOOD: Dale Thomas has taken plenty of flack, but he can play the boy, don't you worry about that. As with Murphy, should get plenty of time in the top side, and has the attitude and skill to wow. Danny Stanley appears to be a hard at it Jordan Lewis type, and may sneak into calculations.

ESSENDON: I suspect Pat Ryder will be a bit too raw to win it, but he is a fascinating youngster who could do just about anything. Much will depend on how he is used and how often.

FREMANTLE: Marcus Drum has already been daftly written-off as a key defensive proposition simply because he is only 190cm tall. Other players have performed well at the same height or smaller, and have done so because they are predominatly good footballers. Drum will be excellent for Freo in whatever role they give him.

GEELONG: Travis Varcoe is precisely the speedy and skilled outside midfielder that the Cats so desperately need, but he may need a season or two to develop.

HAWTHORN: The Hawks have several overhang outside chances, the best of which would appear to be Clinton Young. Don't be surprised if Matthew Little impresses if given a chance across half forward, and Thomas Murphy could surprise out of defence. Grant Birchall was on the brink of senior selection across the NAB Cup and already has plenty of admirers.

KANGAROOS: Jesse W Smith, for mine, was an absolute certainty to place prior to his injury and will probably still get enough games to do so. The injury may prevent him from getting enough games to win though.

MELBOURNE: How can you go past Nathan Jones? A quality youngster who mixes pace with a hard-at-it style and has no problems finding the pill. Should work his way into the Demons side at an early stage and will do well.

PORT ADELAIDE: No real standouts.

RICHMOND: Have two prospects. Danny Meyer hasn't wowed as of yet, but he does have the skills and could make a fist of things of a wing. Young Matthew White did some nice things in the NAB Cup game against Hawthorn and looks to be a quiet achiever in the mould of Clinton Young. Tiger fans would argue a case for Adam Pattison, but his cause will only be helped by the coaching staff giving him more running time in the ruck or out of defence(where he appears better suited). Wallace has talked about persisting with him forward, but he will most likely struggle in that capacity.

STKILDA: No real standouts.

SYDNEY: No real standouts.

WEST COAST: For mine, have two gilt-edged prospects in Shannon Hurn and Ben McKinley. The latter should get a top side gig up forward from an early stage and has the capacity to pull down strong marks and kick a few goals. Hurn is a mature type with talent and will perform solidly if given the chance.

BULLDOGS: I think Shaun Higgins will develop into a strong player, but as a young inside-type in this Hound outfit, is unlikely to get enough opportunity this season.

If pushed on an eventual finishing order:

1) Chris Knights
2) Dale Thomas
3) Jesse W Smith

with Young & Clarke the darkhorses.

Danny Meyer

Nope, still to small.

Matthew White

Too raw, not quite ready to make this kind of impact

Adam Pattison

Personally ... Would love to see Jay take CHF, not Adam...

If there wasn't a limit on the number of games played, Jay would win it for sure.

This kid is ready to explode over the next two years.

When sla.gging him off, many people including Richmond supporters tend to forget he is only 20yo

Not with talls of the likes of Rutten, Roughead, Franklin, Bradley & Travis Cloke on offer methinks. All are younger and less experienced than Shulz, but to this point have shown more. I'd also take Mitchell Clarke before Shulz.

Hopefully, he certainly looked more settled at CHB late last season.

21 in a few short weeks...

When has that ever stopped people. Some youngsters are copping it from the age of 18.

At this stage, Jay will be better than the two Hawthorn boys, and before you bite, I mean purely this year. Not potentially over their careers.

Besides which, all the above named with the exception of Clarke have been nominated?

Mate you know, of all the kids at the club, this is the one I have been a wrap on for years. Jay has everything needed and if not for a broken ankle, we would have seen it last year.

Unfair enough.

You didn't mention anything about "of those not already nominated" in the previous email.

I would have thought that Shulz would have received a nomination after his blinder half against Brisbane a couple of years back?

I don't know about this, from experience you seem to be a huge wrap for every Tiger youngster... :p

lol I didn't think you could be nominated after being nominated if you know what I mean? Maybe i'm wrong.

The 5 goals at the Gabba? He's played 25 games, from memory, that was in 2004 ... He would have been over the games limit by then.

That game is actually a prime example of #a - Why I believe he has the goods & #b - Why TW is wrong to play him at CHB

It's the one game he's been able to play as the forward, and he kicks 5 goals on the best team in the league (at the time)

Now here's where it gets complicated.

The Brisbane game was officially Schulz's 16th, but...

I believe he was eligible for all games played in 2004, as he had only played 5 games in 2003.

Yes... I must be right, as Reiwoldt played a handful of games in 2001 before going on to win the award in 2002.

That's how I read it, it doesn't matter how many games you play during a season, as long as you're no older than 21 and haven't played more than 9 AFL games coming into the season.

If it were me, I'd just have all players under 21 eligible (providing they haven't won it before).

I actually agree, unless you have been nominated previously.

ie: The players genuine 1st good season - For example, I would rule out Franklin, Roughead (I hate Hawthorn with a passion but I do love this blokes name lol), Griffen etc

I don't necessarily disagree, although this does advantage players like Reiwoldt, who play a few games one year and their first "good season" is their second, off the back of a second preseason and the comfort of being well and truly settled into a club.

I strongly doubt this.

You talk about the club so often, I think you're precariously on the brink of buying a membership. :p

LOL

You really are on the happy pills this morning aren't you mate?

lol

I'd give up watching the game before wearing brown and gold... There is only one way to describe that combination and you know what it is ;-)

& for the record, I haven't sla.gged off Hawthorn in weeks!

A good start for the class of 2005 on the weekend.

Mitchell Clarke wasn't dominant, by any means, but he followed up his strong preseason form with a sound top comp debut.

Grant Birchall ran strong, done fine, for the Hawks out of defence in his hometown on Sunday; while Marc Murphy produced a potent third quarter to help Carlton get on top of Melbourne at the Dome.

You would think, however, that the Rising Star nod will go to Dale Thomas, who picked up 17 possies, an early mark of the year contender and snagged 2 goals for Collingwood on Monday night.

Fantastic debut.

The pie fans were mainly cannibalising themselves on that score, given that 90% of them had set themselves up to laud the expected acquisition of Xavier Ellis at 2.

Much of the less discerning non-magpie types (particularly on BF) were all too happy to play on colliwobble insecurities further by talking draft bungle.

I remembered Thomas' showing inthe TAC GF and wondered what the flock the Pie tragics were worried about, as he looked sensational.

Collingwood has a lot to be concerned about, but Thomas is not a worry by any stretch.

If anyone but Murphy wins it, it will be a miracle. Pencil it in now. The 2006 Rising Star WILL BE Marc Murphy from Carlton.

I'd be keeping it in my pants for now, Locky.

He's good, but he's no certainty.

Spot on,

#1 draft picks don't always win the award in their first season.
