RL in NEW rape claim?

Football's season of shame dives to new depths
By Jacquelin Magnay and Les Kennedy
March 18, 2004

A mother's claims that four rugby league players "competed" as they raped her intellectually impaired 18-year-old daughter has taken allegations of sexual assaults by footballers to a new low.

The woman said the attack had been horrific, leaving her daughter suffering both physically and emotionally. "She doesn't believe she has a future."

The latest claim came as other high-profile footballers caught up in police investigations across two states attended training sessions yesterday.

The AFL players Stephen Milne and Leigh Montagna, who have vehemently denied allegations by two women, appeared with their St Kilda teammates in what their coach, Grant Thomas, called a show of solidarity.

The Melbourne club had named the two players on Tuesday after confirming that police were investigating.

On A Current Affair last night the mother of the mildly disabled teenager condemned the extreme competitiveness of football's macho culture.

She claimed her daughter was raped by four league players competing in a Sevens competition in Longreach in Queensland in February this year.

"These men were competing against each other . . . they were actually competing against each other while they were raping an innocent, gorgeous student, who had just started college, just her second week in college. It is hideous, there is no way to describe what they have done to her, it is just wrong, it has got to stop."

Her daughter had been with other students at a hotel but at some point during the night she was separated from her friends.

"From two o'clock she was raped by four football players," the mother said. "None of the young girls out there are safe; there is a culture of power with these footballers who think they can do whatever they want in a pack mentality and they think they can get away with it."

A police spokeswoman confirmed that a sexual assault complaint was made about February 22 and that Longreach detectives were dealing with the matter.

The Queensland Rugby League chief executive, Ross Livermore, said: "If they are rugby league players they have not been identified. A lot of blokes get together, whether it be touch players or even some of the union blokes, and make a team to play in these carnivals, but if it is league players we will look into it thoroughly."

The NRL said the players were not affiliated with any club and had entered their own team in the Sevens tournament.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, cancelled a board meeting at Belmore Oval that was to deal with the casual dress of players when they were interviewed by police two weeks ago about an alleged sexual assault by six players.

A spokesman, Bradley Clyde, said the Bulldogs were awaiting further information from the investigation and that the board would meet later this week.

Police sources have indicated that there may be a development in the case later today, but it is also expected that some Bulldogs players will be required for further questioning.

This comes as the Victorian police are continuing their investigation into an alleged incident on February 7 involving a woman in a South Yarra unit by two players from another NRL team, the Melbourne Storm.

This incident was posted on the QRL part of LU about three weeks ago.

It's amazing how the journos keep digging for more.

I must admit though, it sounds bloody shocking.

I love how Magney keeps referring to the Bulldogs and Storm incidents. "This comes after the Bulldogs...

TDRL boss says players not part of rape
By EVE REITMAJER
08mar04
THE Townsville and District Rugby League has distanced itself from any possible scandal involving a rape allegation made by a Longreach woman against a group of Townsville players taking part in a sevens tournament in the western Queensland town two weeks ago.
Police confirmed an allegation of sexual assault was being investigated but would give no further details.
Senior Townsville police said they could not comment on a matter outside the Townsville-controlled region. TDRL president John Willey said no footballers were sanctioned to play in any sevens tournament in Queensland for insurance reasons, and any Townsville team in the Longreach event would be comprised of private individuals.
"Sometimes, past and present players get together socially for events like this but that sort of participation is nothing to do with the TDRL."
Mr Willey said he had never heard of the Jarrod Moore Rugby League Sevens Tournament until he read about it on Saturday morning.
He said no clubs from the association had been involved in such a tournament.
"I've rung all the clubs and none of them, either the under-19, reserves or A-grade teams, participated in that competition.
"We had a number of clubs playing that weekend but not in Longreach and not in that competition."
Mr Willey said he was disappointed by the reports of the alleged rape.
"At the moment it seems that people are trying to dig up any dirt that they can on rugby league and to drag us into it is totally unfair," he said.

Should forward this to the Sydney Morning Bloody Herald. It's a headliner on their website. They should fully research articles before publication...

We are doing a better job than them!

Sounds like it isnt even confirmed to be league players. They could be just dudes from a pub who have just made a team for that tournament for all we know.

Gees the media are certainly desperate to get onto this.

What next?

Well apparently ACA had a new rape claim so Today Tonight got themselves another one so they could air a similar story.

Seriously, that is 60 minutes, the SBS show, ACA and today tonight. Are there any more bias shows that can do there best to air a one sided story where no one can be named and nothing can be proved and so noone can give the other side to the story?

TV ratings and newspaper sales sicken me when they use a story like this to compete.

This is bizarre. It's getting to the point that any legitimate case will be ignored in the future as either "oh rightm another BS story" or "old news". The media are making things HARDER for real victims to come forward and hope for a substantiated police case.

 Good point gaterooze.

I feel sorry for you, to be so gullible to blatant lies is not a good quality to have. Its turning into a similar thing to the Shane Warne SMS thing were every money hungry sheila in the world was making fresh accusations against him. The more people come out making up false sexual assault accusations, the less credibility each case has.
