In the meantime, the AFL is reportedly close to finalising a new $1 billion TV deal that is likely to eliminate one of the two main free-to-air broadcasters – channels Seven and Nine – from bidding for the NRL rights and again leave the code with an inferior broadcast agreement.

Such a situation could be disastrous for the code and affect decisions such as whether the salary cap is increased or the competition expanded to accommodate new teams bidding to join in 2013.

I dont necessarily agree with this.

Everyone has known for 5 years that the AFL will negotiate their new TV contract first.

Even the IC being on board now wouldnt be able to prevent this.

The NRL went first the last time and got shafted... there seemed to be plenty of money left over for the AFL...

Yeah, saw that after my post Taipan.

Still not happy though, if Gallop is still involved we're in strife. He is still a NEWS lackey and he'll be doing everything he can to ensure they're in the best position possible to get the rights as cheaply as possible.

Its been around for 6 months that ( rightly or wrongly) Quayle wouldnt be part of the IC...

I cant really see Moffett or Whittaker getting a gig either....

Quayle could be 140 years old and riddled with Alzheimers, Leprosy and Swine Flu and he would still be a better pick for the IC than Moffett you gormless plonker.

I think Moffett and Whittaker could be part of the new IC, they could be the official tea ladies?

Nah, they'd f**k that up. Whittaker would take days to decide which type of tea they should use whilst Moffett would be too busy licking windows to help.

Why not throw Ian Frykberg in there as well.

This IC will have News' grubby hands all over it.

We're f**ked.

Gallop changes his position on important issues almost daily.

The script is changing almost almost hourly and he's struggling to keep up.

Quayle should be on there. If the clubs support him, who's blocking him? God forbid News should be succeeded by someone competent

Really how hard can it be to pick the commission ffs? Pick a day, get a large room, set up polling booths, get all the eligible voters in, then they keep voting on paper in secret ballet style on their preferred candidates, while eliminating the least voted for contenders each time. Then they keep voting till they get eight nominees with 75-80% of the vote for each one of the successful candidates. With 10 mins between each vote. And they are not allowed to leave the room till we get a result.

My preferred option too would be to have this totally televised and mic'ed and for each voter not to be allowed to talk to one another between voting and seating them at least five feet apart from one another. Now there is a plan and total transparency on the eventual result.

Before we all start foaming too much about the absence of candidates like Quayle (who I agree would be a great commissioner), just keep in mind that perhaps the reason he's not on the list isn't because he's been "snubbed", but because when asked he simply said he wasn't interested....

NEWS and the ARL have veto powers...

Maybe NEWS wanted to veto the legitimate threat to them (Quayle), while leaving the ARL with too many NEWS lackeys to veto, meaning NEWS will still have influence on the board.

Thre is no way News LTD would want Quayle on there.

He probably knows a little too much of what's gone on in the past for News's liking.

He'd be perfect, but News LTd don't want perfect people running RL.

NRL boss David Gallop says News Ltd not to blamed for delays in setting up rugby league's independent commission

AAP
January 31, 2011 6:13PM

FURIOUS NRL boss David Gallop has slammed as "nonsense" speculation News Ltd is now responsible for delays in the move towards an independent commission to run rugby league.
A report on Monday suggested News was holding out in an attempt to secure one last favourable television deal for the network it partly owns, Fox Sports, before it exited its 50 per cent of the NRL.
Such a move would threaten the $1 billion figure which it has been speculated rugby league, a proven ratings winner, could earn from a new deal beginning in 2013.
The flow-on from that would be less than anticipated increases in the NRL's salary cap and, potentially, the continuing loss of stars such as Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau to big-spending rival codes.
The report suggested club chairmen were unnerved by suggestions of another delay and were planning an urgent meeting to discuss their next move.
"Everyone, including News Ltd, want to see the television rights negotiated after News Ltd exit their 50 per cent ownership in the game," Gallop told AAP.
"It is only those that chose not to call me for clarification who have suggested otherwise.
"There's not going to be a television negotiation until (the commission) happens so that's a nonsense."
League insiders have suggested an NRL club disgruntled at a recent salary cap decision are behind the report.
Formal negotiations on the new TV deal are on hold until a commission begins operations.
Delays on its set-up have prompted fears the AFL will profit at the NRL's expense, the report said.
The AFL's rights expire a year before rugby league's, but Gallop said that was not a factor.
"The fact is the networks recognise the ratings that rugby league secures and they've all expressed interests in our rights," he said.
News Ltd dismissed any suggestion it was now responsible for a delay in the switchover, after previous slow progress had been blamed on the Queensland Rugby League.
"It will happen as soon as it can happen," News spokesman Greg Baxter told AAP.
"We've got no interest in it being delayed but equally we've got no interest in it being rushed to the point where it's not done properly.
"Setting up an organisation like this takes a lot of time.
"We're comfortable with the track that it's on and we're not interested in holding the thing up but I couldn't speculate on when it might all come together."
Baxter said News would play no part in broadcast negotiations.
Meanwhile South Sydney chairman Nick Pappas, a member of the committee examining a 128-name "shortlist" of potential commissioners, said that task would not hold up the commission.
"From News, from the ARL, from the clubs, the aim is to work speedily on finalising those names," he told AAP.
