The QRL are the only body being open and above board and the only body who have shown any concern for the community level of the game at all.

The clubs need artificial spending caps to save them from themselves - yet many still find a way to go broke. The Titans are begging sponsors and the NRL for cash to meet the payroll.

Yet some people believe these same organisations should be given more power and more control. The natural conclusion is sending the game itself broke.

The News Ltd conditions are also a major hurdle - and again the QRL is the only body that wants to protect the long term interests of the game. News Ltd should not be given :

*First and last TV rights
*Any rights to appoint anyone to a controlling body
*Any money to prop up the financially and morally bankrupt Storm

Yet the NSWRL and the clubs will give them all this and more for a small financial gain and some seats on the board of a company that is so far referred to as an 'Indpendent Commission'.

Without the Storm there is no National Rugby League.

Clubs wont have power, just voting rights.

In the current proposed model they will have too much say. Which is a worry for me.

Look, everyone wants an Independent Commission (Independent being the key word). It's the right model that is so important. Roy Masters and Ross Livermore seem to be the only ones thinking it through. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the model of an Independent Commission put forward by the QRL is so much better balanced and makes much more business sense.

QRL Model: 8 on Commission.
1 representing the privately owned NRL clubs
1 representing the non for profit NRL clubs
1 representing the NSWRL
1 representing the QRL
4 independently appointed

We only get ONE shot at this, so let's do it right.

I don't care what they call it.

I also don't care if a team is in Melbourne, as long as it can stand alone without needing handouts from the other clubs.

After all, we're not communists.

Richardson calls on QRL to join movement

Independent commission protagonist Shane Richardson says the Queensland Rugby League has no leg to stand on in its bid for a greater slice of power under a new governing body. Ahead of what looms as a crucial ARL board meeting in Brisbane on Friday - where NSW aligned factions will attempt to persuade their Queensland counterparts to push forward with the proposed model for the commission - Richardson claimed the QRL had no right to a greater representation under the new regime.
The structure put forward by NRL clubs and News Limited - which has received in-principle support from the ARL - is for NSW and Queensland to be given the same say as each NRL club.
Queensland is opposed to the dramatic cut to its powers, but South Sydney chief executive Richardson dismissed concerns that the new commission would only serve the interests of the 16 NRL clubs.
"It's rubbish to say the 16 clubs that provide all the money for all the players that play Origin and play for Australia don't even care about the game," Richardson said.
"They (the QRL) don't fund any of our money whatsoever - the match payment (for Origin) comes out of the total funds from the NRL, not the QRL ... at the end of the game we're funding the game to the loss of $26 million."
The independent commission is seen as the perfect exit strategy for News Limited and the ARL, who currently share control of the game.
Club chief executives on Tuesday said it was vital that a new structure was in place by the end of the season, adding haste to the squabble at ARL board level.
The ARL board was due to meet last week but the gathering was postponed as chairman Geoff Carr sought advice over the organisation's legal standing in the face of opposition from Queensland board members.
While talk of withholding funding to the QRL will likely never amount to any more than a threat, there is genuine concern over the stalled move towards the commission.
Richardson said leaving the ARL with more power than any other entity would take away from the very concept of an independent commission.
"An independent commission is exactly that - independent," Richardson said.
"What the QRL want to do is dominate the independent commission so they can have the say while we pay all the money for all the funds for all the players - how can that be fair?
"It's an independent commission - people get to make decisions for the betterment of the game - not the clubs, not the QRL, but the game."

The beauty of an independent commission is that the commissioners have no self interest - no personal agenda. They look at growing the game as a whole.

The QRL proposal is NOT an independent commission. It’s just a restructuring of the shamozzel we have now. If you have people there to put the clubs or the state bodies before the good of the game we will have gone nowhere.

If the QRL do not get out of the way of the independent commission then they must be forced to do so by whatever means necessary.

The NRL club elected commissioners do have an agenda. The agenda of the people that elect and re-elect them. The NRL clubs are already trying to railroad the NSWRL directors into taking funding away from one of our biggest grassroots bodies. Why do people think the commissioners would be immune from similar pressure from the people who are directly appointing them? The self interest of NRL clubs must be balanced in whatever model is adopted and the QRL model gives that balance. The News Ltd model does not.

How can you claim there is no self interest if the NRL clubs are the ones nominating and voting?

That is allowing the clubs to represent their interests and no one else. Hardly even stevens

The fact that the NRL CEOs think that they will be able to strike with such power proves to me it is the wrong model and gives them too much power.

This my biggest point of disagreement - where the f**k are the funds to run the lower grade and junior comps meant to come from if not from the profits genrated by the NRL! This wanker thinks the money is the NRLs to do with what they want - it a'nt!

And 1 vote is not domination from the QLDRL, this coming from Richardson the biggest numbers man that the Labor party ever had, strike me pink!

Erm... it's Shane Richardson we're talking about here, not Graham. Heh.

I'd rather have Graham Richardson. I'd rather have Kevin Rudd! This fat idiot has already presided over one club going broke in England and now he thinks he can dictate to everyone else. Now he wants to starve the grassroots of the game in Qld of funds just to get his way and look after his privately owned club.

I don't think people realise that they Qin have little if any input in to the how or who the NRL clubs vote for.

The NSWRL is soft and always has been. We need the NSWRL and QRL to have more than 1/26 vote in the commission as they are the custodians of junior league etc in our main states. For NRL clubs to have 16/26 voting rights it crazy and for Colin Love to be the 1st chairman in even crazier.

Did anyone listen to Ross Livermores interview on Talkin Sport Wed night? If u didn't listen to it via their podcast as it was very good.
