Can someone remind me - in 2000 what was the 'sport' Australia introduced as its chosen exhibition sport instead of RL 9's?

Sydney didn't have a demonstration sport. In fact Barcelona was the last Olympics to take advantage of this, showcasing Roller Hockey, Taekwondo and Basque Pelota.
We aren't going to drop the name Rugby. It won't happen. A couple of states of Australia and that tiny country over to the east of us that won silver in the womens 7s are the only places that get antsy about calling one of them "Rugby" and the other "Rugby League".
If we have the better Rugby competitions people will play in and watch them. 7s looks more like League than full Union, we have as much chance of advantaging from any added interest in Rugby as the other mob, as long as we actually have the people and structures in place to do so. Just a matter of being visible.
As for Hayne, everyone who goes to watch him run around in the Rugby will be watching NRL now that he's signed with GC. There's another opportunity.
If you need a thousand word thesis to say 'There are 2 kinds of Rugby' I'd suggest you have more of a problem then the sport.
Wikipedia even has the other one named as Rugby Union. It manages to summarise your thesis in one line. "one of the two codes of Rugby".
Spinners idea of localised terms is fine,it makes sense, some places (France, Rugby a Troize) already do it. Youre on a 1 man crusade to change the name of a 120 year old sport because you can't communicate to Chinese people.
Lol I'm the Doctor has started calling RL 'Gridiron Rugby'
Coz calling the sport by a name that doesn't exist is less confusing than its actual name
Cant wait for all his Chinese mates to look up Gridiron Rugby
