RLEF news

By the end of the summer it is expected that Italy and Jamaica  will be Associate members of the Rugby League European Federation. Germany and Ukraine, maybe some others like Czech Republic and Latvia are expected to get it next year.

World Cup qualifying is open to Full and Associate members of the RLEF only, teams have until November this year to enter but it's expected to be Russia, Lebanon, Italy and Serbia as previously announced.

The RLEF will focus in 5 regions: Atlantic, Middle East & North Africa, West, Central and East. The first 2 are going to be standalone federations at some point. The West as yet has no regional development manager as there isn't considered to have enough development there (excluding of course UK, Ireland and France).

Good news. It's sad really that the RLEF are having to take Atlantic and African developments on their shoulders, but if that's the way it's going to be then so be it. At least they will play a proactive role. Honestly I think that the most sensible thing in the future would be for the current RLEF to become the world governing body.

Sounds like they already are. who would have thought that the RLIF should be involved in development ? :sarcasm:

In fairness, the RLEF is part of the RLIF and receives most of its funding from the RLIF.

Richard Lewis and the RFL of course deserve to be congratulated for taking such an active role in the Federation, and ensuring it got the staff and the resources to actually do something.

This is what will hopefully happen with the formation of the Asia-Pacific Rugby League Federaton, with hopefully Australia and NZ taking a proactive role in the body.

Realistically moving forward there is more value in development work being handled by regional federations rather than the RLIF directly unless there are some significant changes to the RLIF's constitution.

Agreed, but the federations should all be controlled by a higher authority. It shouldn't just be the RLEF taking responsibility for the whole world and the 'RLIF' sitting there not having a clue about international sport.

I look forward to that :sarcasm:

I thought the ARL and NZRL were not joining the Asia-Pacific Fed?

Significance of Sports Accord? Is it just recognition?

Makes it a legit sport, easier to spread the game and to get government support.

Also means RU won't be able to stop/take-over RL comps in emerging nations or have RL development people arrested, etc because 'there's only one official rugby body and it's the IRB'.

This thread (started in 2010) I think really highlights how far the game has come in just five years!!
