RLW - Dragons closing in on Karmichael

The raps on cutie are bigger than the reality IMO.
The only ones who have ever really talked him up big are his manager and the QLDers.
And now he doesn't even make the QLD run-on origin side.
We don't need to be chasing him.
The Soward/Hornby combo is fast becoming the envy of the league anyway.

you don't put hornby on the bench.

The bloke is a legend and is 100 percent Saints.

He is also playing brilliantly and one of the few players I've always felt comfortable with when he has the ball in hand or a tackle to make.

K. Hunt would be nice, but not at the expense of Hornby.

Totally agree
He makes our team

After a long season hornby will be gone... he will be a perfect impact player when fein needs a rest, come on at hooker, great passing and also can set a few plays up. He is having a great season i agree but is it because he knows his number will be up shortly??
Dont get me wrong i love the bloke and the way he plays, all im saying is geting hunt and soward together will put the club in good sted as they are both early 20's and established players!!

No point in even discussing it as far as im concerned...

Hunt has said on many occassions in interviews that he rugby league isnt his be all and end all... I remembering him once proclaiming that he doesnt even really watch the game on his nights off....

Plus with the money Japanese rugby has thrown at him as well as other Union sources there is no chance of us signing him...

Would of been capital but not happening and you cant lose what you didnt have....

He is our captain, and only 29. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say he's playing well because he thinks his time is up. He's adapting to his role in the team as the halfback, and of late has been doing a great job.

Honestly, I was keen on signing Hunt earlier this year, but the way we are playing at the moment, and in the positions he'll inevitably cover, I cannot justify the cash he'd be asking.

5/8 well covered in Soward
Fullback Boyd is going great
Lock we have so many great 2nd rowers and Smith/Costigan/Young have it well covered.

There were big questions over our halves this year, which is where the Hunt talk came about, but every week they grow as a combination, I don't think Hunt has much to add to this side.

As soon as one of our halves get injured we are in trouble?? agree??

If hunt was here as a 5/8 then why not have honrby running off the bench? can cover any half position can cover hooker and also fullback! he will cover those positions and we know he is safe in all of them! Being 29 also has things to do with signing hunt, 29 isnt a young footy player...

I assume everyone thinks that if Hunt was signed by us, he would play five-eighth? Because Boyd has easily covered fullback and Nightingale is a good reserve for him. But I thought Hunt is not really a five-eighth and he proved that when he had a terrible game in game 1 of the origin series last year. Has he played five-eighth at all for the Broncos last year and/or this year?

You don't buy a 400-500k player for depth. 29 may not be a young footballer, but it's not an old footballer either, Hornby has at least another 3 to 4 years in him, at which point you rely on depth you've brought through in the lower grades... A player like Beau Henry.

Hunt is surplus to our halves requirements, for his cost. He is also surplus for anywhere else in the backline.

He is a great player, no question about it. But is he worth losing some of our upper tier players, who actually have their roles in our side and doing the job, to create depth in a position which does not require it?

Who said i wanted him to cover depth?? i want him at 5/8 with jamie in the half position with honrby on the bench for depth! If hunt was bought into the team all the backline positions could be covered with minimal changes..

e.g. boyd injured at fullback -> move hunt from 5/8 to fullback hornby off the bench to half or 5/8...

i just think he is the type of player that plays for bennett! under bennett he was years ahead of slater now he seems to have dropped off the radar (cant get a starting spot with QLD or AUS) he was under bennett!

yeh fien has been bought to cover those positions but we will see how long that lasts!

I know exactly what you meant. My statement was to state you do not buy a 500k player to create depth. Hornby is on between 250-300k. We have bought Fien who can play a variety of playmaking positions for depth.

Hunt is not a genuine half either, something that is lost somewhere in the hype. He is a lock, or a running back. Hunt's best asset is when he hits the ball at pace he can bust through the line. In terms of a passing or kicking game he offers little more than Hornby.

The obsession with signing (or re-signing) marquee players without understanding where they will fit into the squad, and at the overall detriment to the squad is where this club has been led astray in the past.

Boyd has fullback sewn up.
Soward is performing very well at 5/8.
Hornby is steering around the side and providing the support for Soward.

Hooker is where our issues have been and that has been resolved somewhat with the signing of Fien. Hunt for his cost will add no real benefit to our squad, his game offers very little to our halves that is already there, he is not required at fullback, and we have a ridiculous amount for forward pack depth. Marquee backline players should be well down on our list of priorities to build a quality squad.
