There are just two years to go before the world’s best Rugby League teams play in the Final of the Rugby League World Cup 2017.

To mark the two year milestone Rugby League World Cup 2017 Chief Executive Officer, Michael Brown, revealed the new Tournament logo today with current and future Rugby League stars at a South Sydney Rabbitohs community clinic.

In New Zealand, Kiwi stars joined players at a local Rugby League clinic in Auckland to celebrate the milestone.

“Rugby League has never been stronger in Australia, New Zealand and around the world with more people watching and playing the game than ever before,” Mr Brown said.

“We want the Rugby League World Cup to be a great celebration – not just for the players but we want to celebrate the diversity of the countries and cultures playing the game.

“It is important we give fans of all the nations playing in the Rugby League World Cup the opportunity to be part of a great experience and we want them to bring their culture, their heritage and their passion to the games.

“The logo we have revealed today represents the diversity of the hosting partners – Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea and also represents the speed and movement of the game.

“The Rugby League World Cup is the pinnacle event on the international calendar and I know players are passionate about representing their country on the world stage.” Mr Brown said.

The RLWC2017 logo was designed in consultation with Australian, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea cultural leaders. It represents the movement, agility and power of the sport and blends together the trophy as the ultimate prize of the event, the colours of the host nations and their cultures.

The RLWC2017 will be officially co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from October to December in 2017 with the world’s best players from the world’s best 14 nations competing to become world champions.

There will be 28 matches in the Tournament played across three countries. Three Pool Matches will be played in Port Moresby, while the remaining matches in the Tournament will be allocated following consultation with potential Host Cities in Australia and New Zealand.

“To make this Tournament a true celebration of diversity, we also want to play the Women’s World Cup at the same time as the men’s. With more than 180,000 women and girls now playing and over 2.1 million female fans following the game in Australia alone, there is no better time to celebrate the women’s game,” Mr Brown said.

Mr Brown also welcomed the appointment of two new RLWC2017 Board members with Dr George Peponis appointed as Chairman and Andrew Fraser joining as the second ARLC representative.

“I am delighted both Dr Peponis and Andrew Fraser have agreed to join the 2017 Rugby League World Cup Board. They will bring with them an exceptional understanding of the game and great administrative experience that will help us to deliver a successful Tournament in 2017.”

Dr Peponis is a former Captain of the Kangaroos and currently Chairman of Canterbury League Club and NSWRL. Andrew Fraser is the former Deputy Premier and Treasurer of Queensland and is currently NRL Head of Strategy and Investment as ARLC nominated Director.

The full RLWC2017 Board consists of:

Dr George Peponis (Chairman)
Andrew Fraser (NRL Head of Strategy and Investment)
Garry Fissenden (NZRL Chairman)
John Bishop (NZRL Director)
David Collier (RLIF CEO)
Nigel Wood (RLIF Chairman)

A little disappointing that they're not using the established logo from 2008 and 2013.

bout the Logo

We are proud to have been able to create a logo that truly represents the cultural heritage of the countries hosting the RLWC2017 – Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

It was also important, however, to maintain some of the styling from the previous RLWC logos which have strong representation of the shape of the Tournament trophy.

Overall the logo reflects the movement, agility and power of the sport combined with the vibrant colours of the three host countries, their cultures and using the trophy as the foundation in the logo as the ultimate prize in Rugby League.

The following descriptions of the patterns on the logo have been provided by the cultural leaders:

AUSTRALIA Players traveling to the Rugby League World Cup which is represented by the meeting

NEW ZEALAND The Koru symbolises new life, regeneration, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol of the Maori art, carving and tattoos.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA The Kundu Drum is the national PNG symbol and is featured in their Coat of Arms. It is a common element in all PNG Provinces mainly used in cultural dancing.
The Road to the Rugby League World Cup 2017

The RLWC2017 will see the world's best 14 teams battle it out to be crowned world champions.

Ten teams have already qualified and include the co-hosts Australia and New Zealand along with Papua New Guinea, England, France, Samoa, Fiji, Scotland, Tonga and Lebanon, who were the last team to qualify in October 2015.

With ten teams already qualified for the RLWC2017, the eyes of the Rugby League community will be on those battling to fill the remaining four spots in the Tournament.

The four remaining qualifiers will come from the Americas and Europe regions and will be determined by tournaments to be played in December 2015 and October 2016.

AMERICAS

The first of those qualifying tournaments will see the USA, Canada and Jamaica play between December 4th and 12th this year. This will be a three match tournament played in Florida, USA, with each playing the other once to determine the highest placed team. Details for the three matches are listed below.

EUROPE

The European leg will see Serbia, Wales, Italy, Ireland, Russia and Spain play off over a seven-match tournament in October 2016. Details of the venues for this qualifying tournament are yet to be confirmed.

A live draw took place on the 4th of November 2015 to determine the make-up of the two pools and the qualifying schedule. The Pools are outlined below:

if you got twitter or facebook accounts, let's get it out there. Especially on twitter you can get high profile people to retweet for you. I'm trying a few like Russell Crowe.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I was always under the impression that Rusty didn't exactly hold the international game in high esteem.

Well, enough people support it then he'll have to get on board. The Rabbitohs have already assisted with the launch so can't be all bad. I try not to put obstacles in front of me & generally that helps with a positive lifestyle :)

NZ Media's take on the launch....

http://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/74674077/nzrl-marks-twoyear-countdown-to-rugby-league-world-cup

The two-year countdown to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup final was marked at events on both sides of the Tasman on Wednesday as details for the event continue to be worked on.

The logo for the tournament was revealed, once again based around the trophy and NZRL chief executive Phil Holden said venues would be be announced soon.

"That process is well advanced," Holden said.

"We've visited all of the host cities in terms of which ones responded to the RFP (request for proposal), the next stage will be working through with them which games they want and what that looks like.

"That will all happen this side of Christmas, with probably a final sign off in the new year."

The tournament is jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia, although Papua New Guinea will also have their three pool games played at home.

Holden said they're still talking with Rugby League World Cup officials, who are based in Sydney, about how many games they'll be able to have on this side of the Tasman.

"The New Zealand pool will be here," he said.

"So there are four games here for a start that New Zealand will play, there will definitely be the quarterfinals and we're looking at a semifinal as well. So there are at least nine games up for grabs for New Zealand and that will be massive for us.

"The Rugby League World Cup have been very transparent in the process around what the rest of the structure of the event looks like, so we're working our way through with the Crown around that."

As for the final, Holden says he's hopeful of being able to take that to Eden Park, although no doubt the Australians would like it to be played at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney or Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

"That's on the table," he said.

"It's a question of who puts the best proposition forward. Again, Michael Brown at the RLWC has been transparent around that."

Kiwis captain Simon Mannering says he hopes New Zealand get to play as many games at home as possible.

"Hopefully I'm still around by then and it would be pretty cool to have games here in New Zealand."

Thoughts?

I gotta say, I much prefer the 2013 one. But who knows, maybe with time, it will grow on me.
