RLWC Venue News: Brisbane Final, Only 10 Matches in Aus?

Interesting news today from Michael Brown.

BRISBANE is a favourite to host next year’s Rugby League World Cup final, but Gold Coast could miss out on staging any of the 28 matches.

RLWC chief executive Michael Brown said Australia will host as few as 10 or 12 of the 28 matches and the setup costs for matches made it desirable that selected venues mostly hold two or more matches.

The World Cup will be held in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea from October 26-December 2, 2017.

Brown said he rejected the veracity of a Wikipedia entry for the tournament that named venues for all matches, including a final at ANZ Stadium, with Suncorp Stadium to host the opening game between Australia and England.

Brisbane hosted the final of the last World Cup in Australia in 2008, when 50,559 watched New Zealand beat Australia, and has a record over more than 20 years of supporting Test league better than NSW.

“Queensland has been incredibly fantastic supporters of the event and we are looking at playing in as many locations as we can,’’ Brown said.
“Cairns and Townsville have been nominated, as has Brisbane.

“It’s more likely than not we will go north rather than south … that the Queensland Government will want us to go north.

“It (a match at the Gold Coast) hasn’t been ruled out. What you have to match is the size of the game with the community involved.

“We have yet to agree on a venue for the final. We plan to announce the venue and host cities in mid to late July.
“We are looking forward to working with the (State Government) to finalise the content. Subject to everything working out, they will be a very, very significant partner of the RLWC.’’

Asked if a News Corp report that the 2017 final would be held in Brisbane had picked up on pessimism in Sydney over that city’s chances of hosting the final, Brown said: “The only thing I can think of is that (Brisbane hosting the final) happened in 2008.

“If it is (in) Queensland, we will be excited but we have to go through the process with the governments.

“We would expect a crowd of 50,000-plus for the final and the venue meet a standard, being a World Cup. Suncorp Stadium is certainly in the mix. By no means are they in front of other venues at this stage.’’

Brown said the detailed work on the Wikipedia entry was not that of the RLWC organising committee and its venue allocation was “not even close’’ to what organisers had in mind.

He noted the entry made forecasts of which three nations would qualify to complete the 14-country tournament and that referees and crowds had been included for every match.

PNG will host three pool matches of the Kumuls and there would be a split to be determined between Australia and New Zealand of the remaining 25 matches.

One semi-final may be held on each side of the Tasman, working on the basis both nations would possibly win through to the semis from different pools, Brown said.

“Every state and territory has expressed interest in hosting matches,’’ he said.

“To set up a venue once (for one RLWC match) is very costly. You could have two or three matches in cities — it’s highly possible.’’

Although organisers are planning for it to be the best supported RLWC, with total crowds of at least 450,000, some of the least attractive pool matches would be well placed at smaller venues.

Let's remember that Brown was in charge of the 2015 Asian Cup, which split 32 matches between 5 venues.

If only 10-12 of the remaining 25 matches (removing PNG's matches) are to be played in Australia, and Brown employs the 'Multi-game per venue' policy, could the RLWC be restricted to the eastern seaboard? I couldn't see wither Adelaide or Perth hosting more than one match.

Thoughts?

2 games for the big venues is fair enough, but we really should be spreading pool games around to places like Townsville, Newcastle, Canberra, Perth etc.

I've said it before, but I'd love for Fiji to have their own pool and host their matches aswell.

The format of the competition is what I'm waiting on most.

This could well be chinese whispers and mean 10 or 12 venues. There were only 15 venues used in 2013

Surely Mr Brown means 10 or 12 venues in Australia not 10 or 12 matches?

More than half of the 21 pool matches (with 3 games going to PNG, and 1 pool/6 games probably going to NZ) would be in Australia, and probably 4/6 quarter and semi finals, plus the final.

So likely/hopefully
Aus: 12 pool, 3 quarters, 1 semi, 1 final = 17 total

Pool games
2 Townsville
1 Gold Coast
2 Newcastle
1 Penrith
1 Parramatta
1 Canberra
2 Perth
1 Adelaide
1 Melbourne

Quarters
1 Melbourne
1 Sydney City
1 Brisbane

Semis
1 Sydney

Final
1 Brisbane

NZ: 6 pool, 1 quarter, 1 semi = 8 total
Pool:
1 Auckland
1 Wellington
1 Taranaki
2 Dunedin
1 Christchurch

Finals
1 Auckland
1 Wellington

PNG: 3 pool = 3 total

Parramatta will be unavailable due to the new stadium being built next year.

I understand the decision to go to Brisbane again but IMO it's an uninspiring decision. A bit of the same old considering it was there in 2008, however possibly the only decision that results in a sellout.

Would still like them attempt to break the world record set in Manchester and promote the hell out of Sydney to try and get above 75k.

Kangaroos vs. England in Brisbane? Melbourne needs that game. And whatever happened to the tournament opening at the MCG?

The Final should be at Eden Park.

Agree with those who say it wouldn't overly inspiring to have the final in Brisbane again. The city has been very deserving for sure.

But it'd mean more for international footy if we drew a massive crowd at ANZ in Sydney or held it in Auckland.

Super group a will contain Australia and England. 6 games and will travel oz. Melbourne Sydney, Brisbane host 3 oz games, 2 other England, Perth and Newcastle. Last say? Second game for Newcastle.

Super pool b will contain nz, Fiji and at least one pacific islander team. All six in nz. Two each Auckland, Wellington, Cchurch.

One other pool = PNG, with two in PNG (home games) one in Townsville (non PNG game) or all three in PNG..

Second will be NSW/ACT based, three games, say 2 games Gosford, one Canberra.

Quarters, second game for Tville, second game for Canberra, Sydney, Wellington.

Semis, Sydney and Auckland.

Final Brisbane

Agreed. We should be aiming for an 80k crowd not a 60k crowd. Wonder if the DT will run a "FANS LOCKED OUT OF GAME" story :crazy:

As a Brisbane based advocate of the International game I'd love to see the final at Suncorp as obviously it is easily accessible.

However if i could be all but assured that a crowd of 70k plus was DEFINITELY going to attend a Sydney final ...I'd happily organise myself to be in that town for that event.

Having attended the Wembley semis and Old Trafford Final in 2013 ...(and the 2008 Final in Bne) ...it would be underwhelming if only a 50k crowd turned up in Sydney.

Unfortunately guarantees on crowd numbers are something we can't give in the International arena here in Australia ( Especially when the final is in warm weather season where other pursuits are available)

Fair enough, but don't ever let me catch you saying that you also want this WC to turn a profit!!

More efficient and economic in the medium to long run for the promotion of the game to play games in Fiji at a loss than to recolt the money in Australia to maybe pay for games in Fiji later on. If you are ever going to play in Fiji, this is the moment.

I hope the opening is a double header (same as the 2013 RLWC) either as ANZ or, if theyre feeling brave, the MCG...

I think NSW should get some pool matches, but the finals (i assume its 3 matches all up) should go to NZ, AAMI Park and Suncorp.
