RLWC2017 Crowd Watch

For reference the successfully regarded 2008 WC had an attendance total of 293442, averaging 16302 over 18 matches.

An average of 16k + would be a reasonable result and would clear the 450k target over 28 games. I think double counting attendance at double headers is iffy but I expect that's what the official result will reported as.

More accurately to reach 450,000 actual attendees over 25 events we need to average 18,000 per event which would be an outstanding result.

Well, apart from the opener, the final and the 3 x PNG games, ticket sales indicate no other games are even close to 18,000 …

I would think even selling 2000 tickets 50 days away from the event is tracking ok to hit 18k.
Most NRL games that land in the 10-20k range don't sell tickets until the week of, aside from pre-sold memberships.

I don't think it's worth worrying about til after the Grand Final, when it's suddenly the next big thing on the horizon.
I'm attending at least 5 games and haven't bought a ticket yet.

I still don't think we need to panic. There will be 4 weeks in between the NRL grand final and the first round of group games. Plenty of time to ramp up the marketing and get more tickets sold. RL fans are notorious for buying late and assuming they can walk up on the day anyway.

450k is easily achievable. When fixtures were first announced I did some predictions and got to just over 500K. Still don't think any of the below is unreachable....

Australia v England – Melbourne - 30,000

PNG v Wales – Port Moresby - 15,000

New Zealand v Samoa – Auckland - 20,000

Fiji v USA – Townsville - 10,000

Scotland v Tonga/Ireland v Italy - Cairns – 10,000

France v Lebanon, Canberra – 12,000

Australia v France, Canberra – 25,000

New Zealand v Scotland, Christchurch – 18,000

Samoa v Tonga, Hamilton – 15,000

England v Lebanon, Sydney – 25,000

PNG v Ireland Port Moresby – 15,000

Italy v USA/Fiji v Wales, Townsville – 10,000

Fiji v Italy, Canberra – 10,000

Samoa v Scotland, Cairns – 10,000

New Zealand v Tonga, Hamilton – 20,000

Australia v Lebanon, Sydney – 35,000

PNG v USA, Port Moresby – 15,000

Wales v Ireland/England v France, Perth – 20,000

QF1 Australia v TBA, Darwin – 12,000

QF2 TBA v TBA, Christchurch – 15,000

QF3 New Zealand v TBA, Wellington 20,000

QF4 TBA v TBA, Melbourne 20,000

SF1 Aus v TBA, Brisbane 45,000

SF2 NZv TBA, Auckland – 25,000

FINAL TBA v TBA, Brisbane – 52,500

I admire your optimism Morningstar but as for:

England v Lebanon, Sydney – 25,000
Australia v Lebanon, Sydney – 35,000

… that seems a tad optimistic !!!

Ditto:
Australia v France, Canberra – 25,000

Especially when the Australia v NZ Anzac test in Canberra in April barely pulled 18,000.

But I hope you're right !!

(Actually, I reckon Italy v USA/Fiji v Wales in Townsville could with a good push get well over 10,000 …!)

Some of those predictions seem super optimistic. Also does AAMI park actually hold 30K people? I feel like I've seen that place totally packed and the announced crowd is less than that.

I think the pitiful crowd in Canberra for the ANZAC Test was due to total apathy by the NRL and Ch9 and even then despite that, it totally outrated the Bledisloe Cup.

I think I've mentioned it before but a half competent promoter with decent contacts would have the French embassy and community working toward a 'French Festival' at the same time as the game..Get the French community involved. Sell the fact the Kangaroos seldom play France. It's only 25,000 tickets. We're not talking Old Trafford here..

I'm telling you now....You will be lucky to get half the crowds you have put for the NZ games. Rugby League is at an all time low here in NZ. I'm hearing ticket sales for the NZ games are not looking good 50 days out...

We'll see.

Christchurch & Hamilton will be fine. Plenty of bays sold out on ticketek.

Warriors apathy has me concerned about Auckland but the Samoan community should help with that for the opener and the semi final is likely a blockbuster against England on a Saturday afternoon.

Wellington is a worry, but getting a crowd to any event at the cake tin seems to be an issue at present. No NRL game this season though so only opportunity to see RL this year, Kiwis should be on a bit of a roll by then (even with Kidwell as coach )

I think they are on the safe side. Which ones are super billy?

Crowd record is just a tick under 30k. I rounded up.

If you would have said England v Ireland & England v Fiji in RLWC2013 would have gotten 25K sellouts pre tournament you would have been called super optimisic too.

There is more prestige and event feel about a RLWC game that adds a few extra thousand to the gate.

In Australia the RL mentality is to decide to rock up when an match is on. The pacific test got close to zero promotion but the thought of seeing a Pacific Triple header made the walk up crowd fill up Campbelltown stadium to the max.

I'm planning on seeing several Rugby League matches which i'll get around to buying tickets for (hopefully lol).

Nrl don't care about crowds, it's a poor culture developing in Australia for the live game experiance. I'm concerned about the World Cup. But as long as people watch it on tv and keep the money rolling in

If you have twitter Brad Walter is on the media team and very responsive. Red Elephant are doing "multicultural marketing" for the cup and have been setting up fan clubs and promotion festivals for migrant communities.
