Countdown is on to next world Cup!

What we know:

Australia & PNG will host Mens, Womens and Wheelchair world cups

26 teams in total

Men's comp reduced to just 10 nations
Womens 8 nations
wheelchair 8 nations

Australia, Samoa, New Zealand, England, Lebanon, Tonga, Fiji and Papua New Guinea have already qualified for the men’s tournament

France, Wales, Australia, England, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea have already qualified for the women’s tournament

What we also know:

This year’s British & Irish Lions tour and the 2027 RUWC is going to totally overshadow anything the ‘26 WC will do for our game..

Assuming the 2030 WC isn’t awarded to NZ do we think think NZ and Fiji will host games in 2026 ?

It makes more sense to for the kiwis and Fiji to play home games if the intent is to grow the game.

The RLWC is in 2026….why would the 2025 BL tour and 2027 RUWC over shadow the RLWC ??

Do you think Australia is going to become Union fanatics over the next few years ?

Do I think that Australia will become Union fanatics over the next 4 years? No I don’t.

Do I think that the media etc will cream themselves over the Lions tour and RUWC27? Yes I do.

I remember Greg Alexander on 2SM just before the 2008 RLWC asking we are even having a WC and not just a 4 Nations..

Being sandwiched between between 2 behemoths of yawnion isn’t going to be fun given we’ve reduced from 16 to 10 teams and in ‘27 yawnion have - what - added 4 more teams?

Probably the only bright light is the Lions will come just after SOO so it should be fresh in the public’s eyes who is the better code with yawnions scrum reset obsession and tedious ruck and malls?

Fiji hosting will be dependent on whatever deal the NRL has done with the Aus Govt.

Mate I think you`re over-reacting, a handful of union games 12 months before will have little bearing on our WC big or small, especially if we do it right.
The public will have had two full-seasons of League to basically forget about the Linos thing, and as for their WC that`s after and will have no bearing on ours, except a whole bunch more uncompetitive teams and blow-out scorelines.

I'm more concerned about if Australian RL fans will actually support it this time and if the NRL will run it well! The last WC here was underwhelming to say the least.
