Yep good thread.

Players shouldn't be allowed to have any business interests. Have to play Footy and that's it.

I do know that the raiders lay down some serious coin for certain local restaurants to prepare nearly every meal for players. None of them are owned by players tough.
The question is does providing meals for a player come under the salary cap?

I highly doubt it. Even Coles and Woolies have meal allowances for their employees under certain circumstances. Most workplaces provide free lunches to their employees every so often. You cannot really deny clubs from doing the same thing. It's not like they're providing them restuarant meals every night of the week.

Well I know one restaurant provides 50+ meals 3-5 times a week. I suspect it's all a matter of diet control for the club but if I were to eat there that many times it would easily be in the order of $5000-7000 a year.

...which is nothing when compared to a footy contract. I don't think 5k worth of meals is going to have much bearing on a player's decision to play for a club.

The two biggest costs all of us have are housing and food. If a club can cover the costs of these two items for players then you are talking big bucks. Should it be counted under the cap? Probably depends if all clubs can do it. Renting in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney would be much higher than places like Townsville, Penrith etc.
