He's a decent fill in. Nothing flash, but should do a job. He at least gets the ball to the backs and has a kicking game anyways, lol.

there's a reason why Jeff Robson is sitting behind Finch atm...you'll see why on Friday.

Look, for now, he will do the job. No one expects him to do much better than Finch, he's just the back up after all....but he won't do worse either. Put it this way, I won't be changing my tip based on his selection...but neither am I unhappy that he's the man picked for the time being.

Everyone is calling Robson Finchs replacment, If anything he may come on to the bench with KK moving to halfback (which would make more sense). Anderson did play Keating/Hayne halves combo against the Roosters in the trial (and they did well mind you) when finch was injured.

I at worst expect Keating to be brought up into the starting side, but I would not be surprised come game day if Kelly or Mortimore were elevated to the bench.

i dont see how putting mortimer in would hurt his career?
I mean even if he goes sh*t we groom him for next year yeah? Atleast he would have experience......I dont see why it would ruin him

hindy111 it could destroy his confidence, but that is pretty much it. Other part is if he is a sucess it gets to his head. If he fails to these things, he would never have made it anyway IMO

Firstly, I am a huge fan of Mortimer and have been from the first time I saw him play SG Ball and before I found out his name.

Secondly, if we are to groom him for 2010 then let him play some more of the season in NYC, promote him to Wenty around Round 12-15 and then in the last five or six rounds bring him into the first grade squad.

Sounds like a long winded way around it but there are good reasons.

1. The first grade team is playing like a busted arse. The NYC side, while not playing much better, is a better unit at this stage for him to be learning in due to the stability within the team. Sending him to Wenty lets him adjust to the bigger bodies he is sure to come up against in first grade, yet it allows him to do it without the added pressure of rescuing the season for first grade.

2. The kid has been primarily a five eighth through his junior career. He is learning the halfback role and doing an admirable job at the moment but it is easier to cement the role in the lower grades than it is in first grade.

3. Once, or maybe if, the first grade side can find some form it will make the transition into first grade much easier.

6 - Hayne
7 - KK
9 - MKeating
14 - Lowrie (as utility, we didn't look bad there when he filled in vs Souths)

OR:

6 - Hayne
7 - KK
9 - MKeating
14 - Robson (played there when he played for Parra years ago)

don't crucify me about Lowrie, it sounds better then promoting a not-so-great and/or a maybe-great-one-day

I would also like to throw it on the record that im a big Robbo fan.

The otherway to do it Colonel is to play the player off the bench, and allow him to come on for abotu 30-40 minutes a game and play some first reciever without giving him sole duties the whole game. Cronk played off the bench for 2 years behind orford, and Tim Smith played one trial match and got thrown in. Every player is different, and I wouldn't mind seeing some freash blood (kelly or Mortimore) being played off the bench. Robson is not that answer and at very least Keating should be playing halfback.

I am with you here thou, I would like to see Mortimore complete a few rounds more rounds in Toyota cup before being elevated anywhere. I don't think he needs to play for Wenty because the comp is very very crap, not the standard of premier league or QLD cup. Keating made the transition to the NRL off the bench just fine, and I would like to see Kelly or Mortimore make the transition into the NRL that way, just not yet.
