The otherway to do it Colonel is to play the player off the bench, and allow him to come on for abotu 30-40 minutes a game and play some first reciever without giving him sole duties the whole game. Cronk played off the bench for 2 years behind orford, and Tim Smith played one trial match and got thrown in. Every player is different, and I wouldn't mind seeing some freash blood (kelly or Mortimore) being played off the bench. Robson is not that answer and at very least Keating should be playing halfback.

I am with you here thou, I would like to see Mortimore complete a few rounds more rounds in Toyota cup before being elevated anywhere. I don't think he needs to play for Wenty because the comp is very very crap, not the standard of premier league or QLD cup. Keating made the transition to the NRL off the bench just fine, and I would like to see Kelly or Mortimore make the transition into the NRL that way, just not yet.

Keating also had two years in and around the Premier League side before making his debut off the bench as well as training with the top grade side for an extended period.

Halfback/five eighth certainly is a much harder position to learn as opposed to the forwards or the backs. For every Chris Sandow that makes the transition easily there is a Steve Jolly, a Craig Weston, a David Baysarri, A Martin Seal, a Steve Witt...... and we have certainly had our fair share of potential superstars not make it.

For once I'd like to see us spend the time and let the kid have to be picked when he is ready rather than being picked before he is.....

The other reason I wouldn't pick Mortimer just yet is due to the publicity that he will receive as not only a flow on effect from the Finch/Cayless/Ando saga but the fact he will be a Mortimer playing for Parramatta. I think long term it is safer to let the ink settle on this week's newspaper before we thrust the kid into the spotlight.

Add to that the club leading up to an election that could very well change the direction of the club, the media attention would be tremendous.

I wonder what Dad & Uncle Steve think about throwing Dan into the deep end ?

Just remember not long ago it was unheard off to take a kid from U23's and start him in FG. Unless he was exceptional like Sterlo etc.

why cant luke burt play six hayne to fullback nothing really to do with this thread i know I'm sorry but burt has a good kicking game and speed hayne still touches the ball more and it's good ball at fullback with a bit of room to move at 5/8 hayne barley gets going before the defence is up in his face.

back on topic i'm sure kk will get the nod on friday night with maybe robson on the bench i would like to see the 9 from nyc though he looks really good cant think of his name off the top of my head

I saw Robson in a TV game last year, and he did quite alright.

Of course it will require our pack of forwards to not play like a bunch of soft c**ks, and for someone with decent five-eighth attacking skills (K Keating, Mateo) to be outside him rather than Hayne.

Good enough for one week, and take things from there after we get through Friday's game...

I saw him play for Manly last year when Orford was injured. He was awful.

Yeah I thought the same thing ...which is why I choked on my corn flakes when i read that Parramatta had signed him .....lets hope that he had an off game that night .

Unfortunately, that was one of his best.

I was hoping KK would get the number 7 and Kingston his number 14 jersey.

Is it true Kingston is injured?

I have my reservations about Robson like many others in here....

He's a good backup but hardly a great option for the remainder of the season at halfback. Maybe Mortimor will get a go soon enough. Thrusting him in this week when he hasn't been training with the first grade squad is a tough ask though.

Parramatta turn to Jeff Robson at halfback

HE has played just six NRL games over six frustrating years but tomorrow night Parramatta will turn to little-known Jeff Robson.
Robson, 26, will replace Brett Finch at halfback for Parramatta's desperate match against St George Illawarra at Parramatta Stadium.
Robson played his six first grade games at Manly between 2004 and 2008, although primarily he was a Premier League player.
He left Manly for Parramatta this season.
Daniel Mortimer - whose father Peter was a Canterbury great - was also considered as a replacement for Finch but will be overlooked in favour of Robson.
When Robson runs on for the Eels, he will be Parramatta's 25th halfback since the great Peter Sterling. See the list here
Leeton-born Robson has missed a lot of football through injury which included operations on his pectoral and foot. He has played this season with Wentworthville, Parramatta's feeder club, in the NSWRL Cup.
Robson was due to play with the Wenty Magpies this Sunday afternoon against the North Sydney Bears at North Sydney Oval.
"I haven't played a lot of first grade but every time I do I really enjoy it," Robson said. "It would be good to get another opportunity.
"I trained with the boys all through the off-season so it won't be that bad.
"But it will be tough to replace Finchy. He is a great player and a great bloke too."
Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson confirmed Robson would be in his NRL squad.
"He will be in the 17 (tomorrow) night and more than likely he will start," Anderson said.
"Jeff is a steady player and he has experience.
"He has been at a couple of clubs and has been in a professional rugby league environment for a number of years."
Mortimer was philosophical about the possibility of being overlooked to make his first grade debut. "I've got to bide my time," he said.
Manly chief executive Grant Mayer revealed last night why Robson left his club at the end of last season.
"The Sea Eagles now have a feeder club on the Sunshine Coast and therefore are not involved in the NSW Cup," Mayer said.
"We no longer had the need to carry 35 fulltime players and Jeff was in that squad for three years.
"When he played first grade, Jeff proved himself more than a capable player in at halfback."
Robson was prepared to stay at Manly and wait behind skipper Matt Orford but wanted to leave when the Sea Eagles signed Trent Hodkinson from Parramatta.
The coaching staff at Parramatta have a high opinion of rising 18-year-old halfback Albert Kelly but officials believe he is not yet ready for first grade.

This is fantastic! First, Brett Finch leaves; and now, after 40-odd years of following Parramatta, a guy with the same surname as me is playing first grade for the Eels. GO ROBBO !
