Entrance never liked the financial outlay and the travel, it's been common knowledge and was the reason for their first exit from the competition. It's up to the NSWRL, I feel, to put a 60/40 financial deal in place to have them participate and strengthen the code on the Central Coast.

Good news for St Marys with Sonny Tuigamala, winner of the best player in Saints RMC side last year, listed to make his first appearance for 2017 via SS this weekend.

Again relies on the funds being available - and then much like the Swans in the AFL, it begs questions of level playing fields etc

When the Jim Beam Cup started in 2003, the sponsor paid the travel costs for the 4 central coast clubs travelling to Sydney as well as the Sydney clubs travelling to the central coast.

Interesting. Did that cause any consternation amongst the Sydney-based clubs?

The deal would still be fairly weighted to the CC clubs, no? They would do the bulk of the travelling therefore get the bulk of the financial support.

The deal would still be fairly weighted to the CC clubs, no? They would do the bulk of the travelling therefore get the bulk of the financial support.

So what it meant was that after the NSWRL specifically sought to recruit central coast clubs to the comp, the 8 Sydney clubs would bear no travel costs and in addition the 4 CC clubs would bear no travel costs, so that sounds even to me, there are no profits made.

Moreover, travel costs would be a fairly minor issue - it is not as if they are flying to Perth, who had to pay the travel costs for both themselves and all the other JBC clubs. I would say that the travelling issue for CC clubs would have been the escalation of home ground advantage and the time eaten up. As the number of CC clubs declined to the point where it was only The Entrance, they had to travel for 100% of away games plus all finals.

Macquarie Scorpions and Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles will open the inaugural NSW Challenge Cup tomorrow (Saturday, 1 April), in a flashback to the bygone era, with the Grand Final to be played as the curtain-raiser to the last Country-City match in Mudgee on 7 May.
NSW Challenge Cup

Four 20-minute quarters, unlimited interchanges and mid-week fixtures are part of the rejuvenated Rugby League knockout tournament similar to the Amco Cup of the 1970s and 80s.

The Scorpions and Sea Eagles will join the South Newcastle Lions, Wests Devils, Helensburgh Tigers, Guildford Owls, Auburn Warriors and Concord-Burwood-Glebe Wolves in the tournament.

The remaining Round 1 matches will be played on Wednesday night (5 April) with South Newcastle taking on Concord-Burwood-Glebe, Helensburgh facing off with Guildford and Wests going head-to-head with Auburn.

Nominated teams from CRL's strongest divisions in Illawarra and Newcastle and NSWRL's Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield competitions will feature in the eight-team tournament, bringing clubs from NSW country and city regions closer together.

The winning team will receive $15,000 in prize money, while the runner-up will take home $7,000, with every team receiving prize money.

RESULTS | Ron Massey Cup Round 5
Mounties RLFC 18 (T Cronan, D Izzard, L Li tries; M Kennedy 3 goals) drew with Guildford Owls 18 (T Shelley, M Achurch, H Hunt tries; J Carlaw 2, D Vasek goals)

Hill District Bulls 58 (J Horo 2, T Perrin 2, A Weston 2, D Barnes, C O'Donnell, F Mateo, T Eisenhuth, T Young tries; J Horo 4, C O'Donnell 2, F Mateo goals) def Auburn Warriors 10 (Z Chong-Nee 2 tries; T Sassine goal)

Wentworthville Magpies 32 (F Dibley 2, D Howard, A Gafa, J Martin, B Cook) def Western Suburbs Magpies 6 (J Davis try, V Mapesone goal)

St Marys 68 (G Daniela 3, M Sivo 2, P Pua 2, T Satini, V Lilomaiava, J Hill, M Cerruto, M Feilo tries; A Davis 10 goals) def Cabramatta 6 (T Ahovelo try B Cox goal)

Blactown Workers Sea Eagles - BYE

Concord-Burwood Wolves - BYE

Mounties produced their second draw in 4 games while St Marys and Hills secured their places in the finals by winning 3 games. It is hard to believe that Auburn won its only other game as it appears there is virtually no one in the team that can tackle. Auburn and Cabra are clear favourites to be the 2 teams that fail win 3 games. At the other end St Marys are clearly the benchmark in 2017.

Wenty had their first win and have picked up a third player from the Mounties 2016 squad, as Finlay Dibley has returned from France to join Jordan Martin and Jake Walsh. Takai Makeola was captain of Blacktown RMC in recent years but having failed to rise above SS this season, has switched to Guildford, playing for their SS team today, but with an eye to breaking in to the RMC side.

In the Challenge Cup, Macquarie Scorpions beat Blacktown 20-10.

"St Marys and Hills secured their places in the finals by winning 3 games".

If this is true the officials at the NSWRL should be ashamed of themselves and sacked - FFS, a semi's spot confirmed after round 5.

In theory, at the start of the season, it might be the case that every team wins 9 and loses 9 but in reality it is pretty likely that the bottom 2 teams will not win 3 games and the scores today support this proposition. The only reason it took 5 weeks is that St Marys had a washout and a bye in the first 4 weeks otherwise they would have got there in 3 weeks.

When the JBC/Bundy/RMC was administered appropriately there were 5 team semis when there were 12 teams so how can you have 8 out of 10?

Today's SS results:

Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 36 (B Rutley 2, J Fraser 2, J Rika, J Attard, A Manu tries; K Horton 4 goals) lost to East Campbelltown Eagles 38 (A Teariki, M Talolua, J Eggleton 2, F Tevaga, B Lahey,C Iosefa tries; B Lahey 3 goals, C Standing 2 goals)

Hills District Bulls 14 (B Mitchell, S Shepherd tries; J Horvat 3 goals) def Moorebank Rams 6 (K Soumpholphakdy try; T Kennedy goal)

Blacktown scored 6 tries to lead 32-12 after 31 minutes, and another 3 minutes after half time to lead 36-18 but it appears that 2 consecutive wash outs have impacted on match fitness and East Campbelltown scored 4 tries in the last 20 minutes including the decisive effort by Iosefa in the 79th minute.

NSWRL should be ashamed of themselves for the horrible organisation of the RMC. Removing Kingsgrove was a good step but then Windsor and Asquith removed themselves with no replacement. 10 team comp and 8 make the finals is an absolute joke. Put a top 5 or 4 in due to the numbers.

The Hills/Moorebank game was interesting. Moorebank actually had lots of opportunities and should have been well up at half time. Their attack is not quite gelling but their defence was very strong and was able to last the whole game which I think may have been a problem in the past. A couple of new recruits from Kingsgrove helped

St Marys Saints 48 (C Epere, M Sivo, A Oughtred, T Satini, S Luke, M Cerruto, J Hill, T Luamath Tuigamala tries; A David 7, M Cerruto goals) def Concord-Burwood-Glebe Wolves 10 (J Dokonivalu 2 tries; P Rogers goal)

Hills District Bulls 50 (A Miski 2, T Perrin 2, T Young, T Eisenhuth, S O’Donnell, T Robinson, J Horo tries; C O’Donnell 6, J Horo goals) def Guildford Owls 6 (J King try; J Carlaw goal)

Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 56 (J Attard 3, G Tsikrikas, K Manu, H Raiwalui tries; K Horton 6 goals) def Cabramatta 10 (B Anderson, I Montgomery tries; D Thompson goal)

Mounties and Wests byes.

Blacktown became the 3rd team to qualify for the finals when they won their 3rd game in succession, although spread over 6 weeks and interrupted by their loss to Macquarie Scorpions in the Challenge Cup.

Guildford backed up poorly after Wednesday's Challenge Cup loss to Helensburgh.
