Roosters poaching Kurt?

NEWCASTLE last night delivered a "hands off" warning to the Sydney Roosters amid allegations the NRL premiership favourites had made an approach to brilliant young halfback Kurt Gidley for next season.

Less than a week after the NRL investigated and cleared the Roosters over anti-tampering claims regarding Brisbane's Darren Lockyer, the Bondi-based club found itself at the centre of a potential storm again.

Knights chief executive Ken Conway confirmed last night his club was told by "an impeccable source" that an approach from the Roosters was made to Gidley's management team.

He refused to divulge the source but the club is taking the allegation seriously.

Conway said the club would have no hesitation in lodging a formal complaint with the NRL if it could uncover conclusive proof.

He spoke with Roosters CEO Brian Canavan yesterday about his concerns and also relayed them to NRL boss David Gallop and salary cap auditor Ian Schubert.

"Somebody this club regards as impeccable has told us of an approach and we trust him," Conway said. "I haven't spoken to Kurt about it but we understand the approach was made to someone within his management team.

"I've spoken to Brian Canavan and he assures me he hasn't made any approach but couldn't guarantee someone else in his organisation hadn't.

"We will certainly be investigating it further and I simply put him on notice that if we get conclusive proof, we will be lodging a complaint with the NRL.

"Both David Gallop and Ian Schubert have been made aware of our concerns but have told us they won't intervene until such time as there is a formal complaint."

Gidley, one of the game's rising stars, comes off contract with the Knights at the end of the season. The club is desperate to re-sign him and have already kicked off negotiations with his manager Darryl Mather.

His value has gone up considerably in the past few weeks as he steered the Knights to a dramatic golden point win over Brisbane last week and was named 18th man for the NSW team this week.

Mather was overseas and could not be contacted last night but he has told the Knights he has not been in contact with anyone from the Roosters regarding Gidley.

"Darryl has told us he hasn't spoken to anyone but could not guarantee an approach had not been made to someone else within his management team," Conway said.

He said in his article in Big Leauge that he hopes he doesn't have to leave Newcastle.
he said "I grew up and played in Newcastle all my life so I don't want to be going anywhere"

Hmm if this is true it makes a mockery of the Roosters "we will replace freddy from within" and "we're concentrating on our juniors" crap that we've all heard in the past few weeks.

Seriously if we don't re-sign Kidley it will be a disgrace. He is not only the FUTURE of our team, he's also one of our best 3 or 4 players NOW. What is the holdup??? He is the definate priority signing.

Same here.

Just because a player has not signed yet, the same cr@p is written.

And it always involves the same clubs are after such & such.

At this rate the Roosters will be granted the 16th licence.

Now the rumour is Riddell is Rooster bound, more like Red Rooster or Big Rooster.

All it is the manager/player trying to get more money.

I'm sure the Roosters are over it as well, Kaz. why would the Roosters wat Riddell anyway?, overweight, poor fitness, Wing & Webb are both better options, but as chopper would say, "never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn".

5. anyone else.

Lets face facts - Tahu is awesome, but he is a winger. Quinn & Hall are decent and alot cheaper, if he wants to play hard ball we will have to let him go (I dont want to tho!!!)

And it would be an absolute travesty is Joey left. He is a big part of newcastle. And imagine he and kidley in the halves, we would kill it.

HOWEVER - it has to be for the right money. If we have to give up a kids or wooly to keep him, it isn't worth it.

Would be awesome to keep BK too, but again FOR THE RIGHT MONEY.

If Sarge needs some help I will offer my services.... ;-)

It does have all the hallmarks of the John Morris saga a couple of years ago, I just don't think the Knights management will be dumb enough to let him slip through their fingers. What it has done is bump up his asking price.

That is the reason he is being linked with the Chooks.
