I just heard on the news that Ross Henrick has passed away. Very sad to hear.

As a Devils fan, I will always remember his efforts at half back in the Devil Premiership of 1980.

He later switched to Valleys (I'm not sure which year) and also played 3 Origin matches for QLD. I'm pretty sure he coached Valleys to a couple of premierships in the BRL.

Does anyone have a summary of his career ?

Sombre Weekend for Queensland League

The Rugby League community of Queensland extends its sympathies to those affected by recent tragedies across the State.

Over the weekend, the passing of several league identities was recorded, including former State of Origin player Ross Henrick and three members of the Injinoo Crocs club.

Tugun Seahawks junior Matt Fraser was also reported as a fatality in a motor vehicle accident on the Gold Coast.

Henrick, 49, is best remembered as a fiercely competitive halfback, a State of Origin player on three occasions and a highly successful coach.

Survived by wife Tina and sons Brett and Trent, Henrick featured in the 1980 Norths team which captured the BRL premiership, scoring a try in a 17-15 win against Souths.

He also played for Valleys and Redcliffe before settling into a coaching career that brought three premierships with Valleys.

Later, he took Wavell State High to the final of the national schoolboys competition, beginning the school’s lasting legacy at that level.

Henrick passed away Sunday night as the result of a heart attack.

North of Lockhart River, three members from Northern Peninsula pacesetters Injinoo were among the 15 claimed in Saturday night’s plane crash.

Although the names of the men have been released elsewhere, the QRL wishes to respect cultural privacy on this issue.

At least two players featured in the club’s recent 62-24 victory against New Mapoon.

Last month in Mackay the local league bade farewell to loyal servant Mick Shew, a life member of both the Mackay Rugby League and Northern Division.

Shew was a stalwart of the Wests club and managed Mackay A-grade sides for 25 years.

A sad day for rugby league. Best wishes to the family and friends of both Ross Henrick, Matt Fraser, Mick Shew and the three unnamed Injinoo Crocs lost in the plane crash.

Terrible news. May they rest in peace.

Transcribed from the Courier Mail.

Heart attack kills former star half.

The rugby league community has been shocked by the death of former Queensland State of Origin halfback Ross Henrick.

Henrick, 50, was a member of Norths' 1980 premiership team coached by Graham Lowe and played Origin in 1981, 1983 and 1984.

He later became a successful coach, talking Valleys to a hat-trick of Brisbane Premierships from 1988 and coaching Queensland Residents against NSW Metropolitan in 1991.

Henrick died from a heart attack on Sunday night, leaving wife Tina and two adult sons, Brett and Trent.

Former international Mark Murray, who played with and against Henrick, last night described the former light weight halfback as one of the game's most courageous competitors.

"He was a real terrier, always taking someone on," Murray said.

"Ross was a terrific little bloke, a 100 per cent competitor and a great clubman."

A Norths junior, Henrick transferred in 1978 to Redcliffe where he was understudy to Greg Oliphant and led the Dolphins to a reserve grade premiership.

He returned to Norths the following year and forged a halves combination with Murray that was a key factor in the Devils' upset grand final triumph over Souths in 1980.

After four seasons with Norths, he switched to Valleys in 1983 and had three years with the Diehards before hanging up his boots in 1985.

An astute tactician, Henrick quickly became a fine coach in the Brisbane competition, winning three successive premierships during four years with Valleys.

His funeral will be held tomorrow at 3pm at Lakeview Chapel, Albany Creek Crematorium.
