had to happen though I feel Jame Franklin recent form should of kept him in the side but oh well :( Ross Taylor great to have him make his debut :D Jamie How's average isn't that great and his strike rate is to low for international cricket. :D great to see new players.

I think Lou Vincent is becoming the new McMillan of NZ Cricket, more lives than a bloody cat. Another quick 20 yesterday before throwing his wicket away.

Franklin once again showed he gets carted when theres no assistance from the pitch, so much potential, so little application. Good to see Mills brought back in, the poor bloke gets injured and the selectors forget all the great work he's done opening the bowling for us in the last year.

As for Ross Taylor, all I'll say is about time.

Vincent is the new Craig Spearman - hits a 25 off 20 odd then gets out...only difference is he hits sixes instead of 4s like Spearman did. I like the guy though.

Spearmen could hit 6s, hit a huge one at the Adelaide Oval once. I think Vincent has been pretty good recently though, at least we're always off to a flyer when hes opening. Better than Fleming at the moment anyway. And as for comparing McMillan to Vincent, Vincent has had a couple of match winning innings in the past year, McMillan hasn't had one in about five years.

salivor, did you notice that in one of Franklin's early overs last night he recorded 141kph, 141kph, 144kph? So much for 125 huh :p

Vincent is filling the Gilly role for you guys. He needs bigger scores than 20s though.

Good changes btw.

I think it's fairly well established that Mills is a frontline ODI seamer and Franklin is back-up.

For mine the players who should be most worried about their spots are How and Vincent. I'd rather have Fleming/Astle/Taylor at the top of the order as I simply think they are the 3 best players. How hasn't really proved much at either domestic one-day or ODI level. Vincent has, imo, proved himself a poor ODI player who has reinvented himself as a pinch-hitting slogger who comes off occasionally. He might work some times, but he is not a genuine ODI top-order bat. In tests he might work, but he is not a clever enough batsman to score quickly in ODIs without slogging.

Our best batting order imo is

1. Fleming
2. Vincent
3. Astle
4. Styris
5. H.Marshall
6. Oram
7. McCullum
8. Vettori
9. Mills
10. Bond
11. Patel

That is with no super sub, and all players available for selection. Oram is a key ingredient. He'll bowl first change, with Vettori and Patel bowling spin, medium pace support from Styris and Astle if need be.

Tough on Fulton, he could probably be there for H.Marshall, although Fulton's fielding is in the Mark Richardson class. Taylor is unproven yet, but if he fires then he could also go in for H.Marshall. Taylor off spin could also be useful, meaning no place for Patel on occasions.

Oram, McCullum, Vettori and Mills are going to need score runs when needed obviously.

Franklin and Mason and even Andre Adams are still very much in contension as well when it comes to World Cup spots.

The rest can forget it, including How (who I see more suited to Test Cricket)

Just my thoughts on it all.

but he's pretty sad in later spells - if there's assistance he can be dangerous, but he seems to have little stamina, and very little clue of what to do when players get after him...

but as we all agree, if fit Mills is the best option to partner Bond.

Vincent and How should be both gone. If Vincent opens the best you can expect is a quick 20-50. If they want to sacrifice a bat for that they could use anyone.

Hopefully they'll persevere with Astle regardless from now, I thought that treatment was pretty shabby given what he's done for NZ - and he's clearly the best opener.

the side really needs Oram to be complete IMO though...

yeah. He isn't a good ODI bowler really. It just irks me a little that whenever an NZ bowler who isn't express fails at international level, everyone (including the so-called experts) goes on about the lack of pace.

If we are to assume that last night's speedball was accurate (and it seemed reasonably so- none of the other bowlers were registering unusual speeds and I don't recall Bond ever even hitting 150) then Franklin was genuinely brisk. 144 is impressive pace. Just under 90 miles an hour and pretty much the same pace that Bond was bowling at the same time.

If Franklin really isn't up to it it's because, like 99% of international bowlers who aren't quite up to it, he simply isn't accurate or clever enough.

Im happy with the changes as we already have won the series, and we do indeed need to start preparing for the world cup. I have no problem with that.

However i did not like the changing of the batting order in the 1st 2 odi's as we hadnt won the series then.

Good on mr ross taylor :)

fleming should be the guy to be dropped. no 100's in 35 odi's not good enough for the new zealand captain. average in the 31' not good enough over his long career.

how is only just starting his career

maybe thats his role in the team, to go out their and take the risks

I know, but if that's want you want Vetorri has done that for ND, McCullum has certainly done it (although I agree he's better at 7) - to my mind, anyone can slog like that - it doesn't need to be a specialist batsman - hell bring back Paul Hitchcock

a 37 average last season is not a average that you just kick a player out of the team for (plus his fielding) especially since flemming has had a shocker the last two years his last century was on 17th february 2004.

fleming is a liabilty in the fielding (bar in the slips - even thats gone down hill at the moment)
