Running for their lives from an uncertain future Brad Walter and Brett Keeble

June 20, 2012

MORE than 50 NRL stars will be playing for their futures in coming weeks as clubs finalise their rosters for next season, including some players under contract for next year and beyond.
As clubs juggle their salary caps to accommodate new recruits, the likes of Wests Tigers utility Tom Humble, South Sydney back Fetuli Talanoa, Parramatta props Justin Poore and Shane Shackleton, Canterbury second-rower David Stagg and Newcastle forward Richie Fa'aoso are set to move on.
The Bulldogs have the most players off contract, with 11 still unsigned, while Newcastle and Penrith also have a large number of players yet to resolve their futures.

All three clubs have new coaches this season, and Des Hasler, Wayne Bennett and Ivan Cleary are still shaping their teams.
After five consecutive losses, Knights chairman Paul Harragon said yesterday all players were ''on notice'' and rival club officials have told the Herald that some Newcastle players were being shopped around - including backs Wes Naiqama and Junior Sa'u, who are both contracted for next season.
Canberra chief executive Don Furner said the Raiders had been offered the services of up to 20 players, including some available to join the club before the June 30 deadline for mid-season transfers.
''We've been offered probably 15 to 20 players … [including] quite a few from Newcastle,'' Furner told ABC Radio. ''Some are talking about trying to move before June 30 this year.
''We have got to sit down with the coaching staff and go through a few of those names. There will be more names that get thrown up too, so we are not in a hurry.''
Furner said the Raiders may be interested in Humble, who is off contract at the Tigers this season, along with fellow utility Tim Moltzen and wingers Lote Tuqiri and Matt Utai.
Shackleton, who is out of favour at the Eels, has been linked with a move to Penrith, who have already signed Melbourne forward Sika Manu, Cowboys hooker James Segeyaro, Warriors back-rower Lewis Brown and Manly centre Dean Whare.
The Knights are still trying to bolster their under-performing squad this year and have been linked to Poore, who is off contract this year but is being shopped around in the hope of a pre-June 30 release.
However, any chance of the Knights recruiting another player this season would hinge on them offloading the likes Fa'aoso or Evarn Tuimavave, or possibly both, due to the salary-cap implications.
The Herald understands Tuimavave was set to take up an immediate offer to play in England but the move fell through.
Harragon, who led the Knights to the 1997 premiership, said yesterday that Bennett had warned all of the players that their performances were under review.
''I think you'll find it with a lot of coaches. Even Ivan Cleary's doing the same thing [at Penrith],'' Harragon told Newcastle radio station KO-FM yesterday.
''You get to the point where you work with blokes, you do this, you do that, and the final result is: 'Hey guys, everyone's on notice. If you're not coming my way … '. He [Cleary] has had to drop all his senior players.
''Wayne's gone in the same direction, just saying: 'You guys are all on notice, this is the way we've got to go, come online and let's do it.'''
Naiqama is in the first year of a new three-year contract, and Sa'u is contracted until the end of next year but it is believed the Knights would consider releasing the pair, who have spent most of the season in NSW Cup, if another club was interested.
Forwards Chris Houston and Willie Mason remain unsigned beyond this year but have been two of the team's most consistent performers and the Knights hope to retain them.

Have to let Lote go. No brainer.
Moltzen going would save us plenty.

Prefer to keep Utai and Humble is good utility and insurance cover.

Would like to pick up Poore. Was very good at Dragons. Haven't seen much at Parra.

Moltzen is a gun. I know he can be inconsistent but when he is on he is a top level player. Utai has given us great go forward and I'd like to keep him.

Lote has looked good recently but I'd lose him before Utai and Moltzen.

Humble is a tough one to know what to do with. I think he is a good player but I don't know where to play him so I'd probably let him go.

Gotta keep Utai. Unfortunately Lote seems to just be good for hit ups these days. Hate to think how he'll be playing in two years time.

I'd let Iosefa go before Humble. I'd keep Lote until years end, if Moltzen got a better deal I wouldn't stand in his way.

It'd be good to see how Poore goes with a quality front row.

I'd be letting go Tuqiri, Moltzen, Iosefa and Heighington on top of Ellis.

Would love to see Blair gone but not going to happen.

Wouldn't be unhappy with Houston, then Poore and Mason.

I refer to the comments I have bolded, you are surely having a lend? How can you justify letting Lote go and then purchasing one or two of the other three?

If anyone gets the chop it has to be Moltzen, Heighington and Iosefa as you have suggested.

Anyone know why we bought Iosefa in the first place?

I'd keep Lote for mine, he's starting to find his rythym and form just nicely.

Thanks for the memories Lote, choose between Humble and Moltzen as our interchange back for next year when Tedesco is fullback, and keep Utai if he will sign for small dollars.

Utai is already on small dollars.

The bigger issue isnt "want" or "dream"

We are in a position where at this time of the year, every winger we have with first grade experience is off contract. I suspect Ryan will stay. But given Shines usually likes to blood a newby over a long period of time, are we going to resign either of Tiquiri or Utai?

Personally I would rather see them both gone and get or promote a couple of players with speed. Speed and catch the ball are kinda the only two things we need at the end of our backline.

Does anyone know is any of the junior wingers are in the first grade training group?

Stagg would be a good pick up.

If we lost Hino for Stagg that'd be a move in the right direction imo.

Tuqiri, Humble and Moltzen can all go.

Utai - my only issue with him is his pathetic defence technique, his poor leap and his lack of speed. As a winger in todays game, it's hard to be a regular if you can't tick some of those boxes.

He'd make a great bench utility though.

Humble - the kid has talent, but really, we only one of him or Chisholm. Chisholm is younger and has played International footy, and he's quicker. I'd hope that we hung onto him.

Ryan has already extended his contract, he announced it on the footy show a month or so ago now.

I'd like to see Koroibete and Ryan on the wings, Chisholm on the bench who can cover anywhere in the back 7.

Stagg is a very good defender, we'd need someone like that hanging around near Blair.

Fa'aoso would be a good cheap buy too and a solid player.

stagg is great defensively but doesnt really offer much in attack.

disagree on utai. his defence this year has been great and cant think of a time where his lack of speed was a real issue.. he makes up for that in sheer power

fa'aoso would be decent pickup for little cash

We need defensive back rowers to cover blair. Stagg's attack is better than hino.

We need pigs to halt the opp. pack. We have attacking brilliance all throughout the backline.

That should be Fulton's job,he has way more attack in him than Stagg,we also have Anasta,Pettybourne,Thompson comming on board, and Sirro will likely end up in the backrow also.

No way should we be looking at Poore. Give Cashmere another season before we sign that imposter.

Apparently Souths have signed Jeff Lima.
