Round 1, as I see it, is just as likely to cloud perceptions of how a season will pan out, as aid them, but can we read anything from the first clump of 9 games?

- Freo definitely warrant flag favouritism.

- Sydney got a wake-up call, but it should be handy for clearing some heads and refocusing the effort.

- Plenty to think about for Collingwood, but I still expect the Magpies to extend the longest current finals streak for another year.

- Essendon & Freo must be pinching themselves at drawing Hawthorn over the next fortnight, as you'd expect them to make merry with the Hawks' defensive personnel woes. Flag defence already looking a tad shaky.

- Good early signs for Geelong, mind you I wasn't at all bullish about Adelaide's prosepcts to begin with.

- Brad Scott got a contract extension at the end of 2012, which may be a very good thing for him, as he seems to be treading water with the Kangaroos.

- Its always all too easy in hindsight, but should Carlton have chosen fresh blood like Hinkley to take them forward, as Malthouse looks set for further struggle. In fairness, you'd have to lay full blame for the Blues averageness at he feet of recruiting staff for delivering a very limited list.

- I really blew it out my pants in predicting an Eagles flag last year, but I've already seen enough to confidently state that the blue and golds will be the biggest improver this year.

- Melbourne & St Kilda... Set to out fight out the spoon surely?! Pretty awful game, it must be said. Did nothing to dispel the fears of more of the old ugly Roos football, although - given the state of the side - we cling to hope that its only the usual ugly football you tend to get from substandard playing groups.

Time will tell, as it always does.
