Got away with that one I think. Gonna watch the replay tonight on FOX before I comment or give scores.

Happy enough with the win, but far out we did it tough. Dragons played well, but a better team may have beaten us tonight.

Thought the ref's were atrocious. How they let the knock on go on the dragons 2d last try go, but don't award macs 1st try. I know the rules say blah blah, but that is really inconsistent of them then to disallow.

Hodges going down was tragic, but I applaud the effort of Gillett to step up and the boys to win it with 16. Happy enough here, but think it only a glimmers glimpse of hope we'll get there.

Tragic news for Hodges. I'm gutted. The consolation is he's had his best year for the club for a long time - and maybe Kahu can come in next week. The option is to bring Norman back in fullback and move Hoffman to centre, but can't see it happening.

Hunt at halfback has revolutionised the side - more expansive, more runners off the ball, more options. Hunt at halfback has also had a positive affect on the play of Prince and McCullough.

2. Gillett
1. Macca

Was really impressed with Macca this week. I know Gillett played well when he got thrust into centre, but there was one point in the first half where he missed two tackles in a row and could barely even manage a jog back onside while Dragons ran past him. He really needs to look at his defence.

3. Macca
2. Parker
1. Stagg (purely for his try saving tackle on the goal-line. Wally called him as Wallace but it was Stagg nice and low)

Hodges said to Locky on 9 that he'll be out til mid next year at least. He seemed very relaxed sitting on the bench and as he was speaking to Locky, so I've got a feeling he might have made his mind up already to hang the boots up. I've never seen anyone so relaxed after receiving a season-ending injury, especially one like an achilles rupture.

To be fair, Hodges has some experience in the matter.

Yep they are like a different team with Hunt at halfback.

Yes I think he knows there's no point crying about it by now and just to accept and get on with it and look forward to next year.

I suppose you're right, but it's not as easy for him as just sit out a few months and wait for his time to come again. They obviously go through a shit load of rehab and hard work to get back. I guess time will tell what his plans are, but personally he looked like he couldn't be arsed to go through it all again.

Bittersweet victory.

Going into this game, I'll admit I felt entitled to a delightful afternoon of footy and for the Broncos to put together a nice display. This was not the case. Losing Hodges early had me in mourning and the rollercoaster of the afternoon had me absolutely cursing our season one minute and wahooing the next.

Due to the delayed coverage, I haven't seen a complete replay of our performance so I can't judge too much but here were my thoughts...

I thought this was Hunt's most consistent performance. In the past couple of weeks he's been guilty of only playing well in the first half but this afternoon I thought he paced himself well. The defining play from him was that patient grubber into the corner which trapped Dugan in goal. Great play and it got us back into the contest.

To his credit, Scotty also played well and made the difference with his pin-point goal kicking. Finally, we're winning games on the back of our kickers!

I thought our forwards played well, with Gillett being my pick of the bunch. This was one of his 'on' games and boy did we need it. That was a great flick to set up Drew in the corner and he did well to slam the ball down when he supported Reed on the inside.

I thought our biggest downfall of the afternoon was a couple of lazy or silly plays at crucial times. There were times where we had the Dragons for the taking but we'd throw a silly pass, fail to support on the inside or give away a penalty in possession. We need to eliminate that crap if we want to pull off this miracle comeback.

What did everybody think of the debutant, Jordan Drew? I thought he played the typical rookies performance, couple of nice touches but looked a little lost at sea. Glad we gave him a game but I don't think we can lean on him.

Nice summary Pete. Still dizzy from the roller coaster also.

I liked Drew, seems to have some good speed and looks like there is hope for him. He showed enough to prove that he could develop into something special. -Seems to have a lot of speed too!

I would say this was as good as it gets with Prince also. He showed he could make some evasive steps on attack and earn the team their try and his goal kicking has improved immensely. -I don't think he has missed since round 20 -good thing too!

Looking at the stats we won that game with less possession, less meters, less penalties and worser completions. So I have to admit I am pretty proud they came through in the end. But there are those crucial moments in the game where we should have scored or built the pressure and we just gave it all up with a silly mistake.

Confident we can go another one against the eels, but will be interesting to see how they line up without Hodgo

Thought Drew went alright. A few people calling for his head, cant really see why. Seen far worse debuts. Im sure a young winger going into his debut would feel pretty confident with someone the callibre of Hodges next to him. But Hodgo going down may have rocked him a little. Didnt notice a lot of him at the game. But when he scored all i could think was maranta probably would have put his foot in touch. So im hoping he keeps maranta out of the side and Kahu comes in for Hodges.

Hard to analyse the game having watched it live. But couldnt understand the use of our forwards. Did Tasi only come on in the second half and play limited minutes? I know mcguire can play the full 80, but should he?
Feel like especially against a side like the dragons who mostly had a young and makeshift forward pack yesterday we could have rolled them by having a good rotation keeping our front row fresh and ready to roll them.

Either way, ill enjoy the win, mourn the loss of Hodgo, and look to next week.

So glad to get away with that one. Being at the game had me on the edge of my seat for about the last 30 minutes. My poor ticket copped a hammering from slamming into my hand a thousand times while I nervously fidgeted in my seat.

Onto the game, I'll break it down...

Hunt: Just keeps improving. Every week he doesn't do the silly thing he did the week before and builds on his previous week. He threw one or two passes that didn't need to be thrown, but his ability to get us repeat sets is invaluable. He was a little quiet in the first half, but that's probably because we didn't have a lot of ball, and the ball we did have, we gave up too quickly. In the second half, Hunt really took the game to the Dragons I felt. That play on the 5th tackle down the short blind side - The cutout pass to Reed who got the ball back on the inside to Gillett - That was absolutely beautiful play, and something Lockyer would have done. Taking the line on, on the last play - Absolutely loved it.

Gillett: HUGE game from Gillet. Had some magic touches, got through a mountain of work and looked really strong with his work. His fitness is coming along too. By next year he'll be an 80 minute player easily. Looks like he's sorted out his niggling injuries and is playing career best footy.

Macca: I thought Macca was excellent. His work around the middle, getting the forwards on the front foot was really good. Since Hunt has moved to Halfback, Macca has gone up two gears. He seems much more comfortable in his role.

Prince: I hope Prince stays around for next year. I don't care what anyone says about that, these last few weeks since he's been told to take a hike, he's stood up big time. His goal kicking is exemplary, his link play has been class and he's even had a few individual glimpses of what we know he can do. I really think if he runs around another year for us in the number 6, with Hunt at 7, Hunt can learn a lot of things off Prince. I think Prince is a very good influence on Hunt and can really help his passing and kicking games. Look at the difference between Wallace and Prince since they were both told to take a hike. Night and day, really. In the off season, I'd really like to see Prince work on his speed off the mark and definitely work on his sliding defence.

Hoffman: What can you say? He's a tremendous Fullback. Yeah, he doesn't have the ball playing skills of Hodges, or the backline finesse of a Brett Stewart, but he's as safe as a house at the back. You know when a bomb goes up that he's going to catch it, and 9 times out of 10 he's going to make meters to go with it. Some of his runs getting us out of trouble were very good, too.

Parker/McGuire/Thaiday: I thought these guys all had stellar games. All 3 got through a lot of work and took some hard meters. Big Sam had one of his better games and seems to be playing with a better attitude which is rubbing off on the younger blokes.

Poor Hodges. I think it's all been said, but I have no doubt he'll be back. Even if the only reason he comes back is to shut everyone up who says he can't come back. I hope he retires from rep footy when he comes back, but we could use his experience in the backline next year, and even the year after if his body holds up. We are going to have a very young backline and Hodges being there, guiding them, will be invaluable.

So, the negatives. We gave away too many silly penalties (although some of those decisions were completely f**ked). Our right side defence was TERRIBLE. I'm sorry Stagg fans, but David Stagg IS NOT A CENTRE. If we play him there this week, Hayne and Loko will run at him and Prince all night and I'm telling you now, it'll get ugly. We need to throw big Corey Oates into the centres and pray to all f**k that Kahu is fit to return to the wing. You can't have a rookie winger in Drew, defending on the same side as Stagg and Prince. Peter Wallace continues to show why no NRL club wants to sign him. The hospital passes, rushing out of the defensive line, giving away penalties. GET HIM OUT OF THE TEAM IMMEDIATELY. It is painful watching the team regress when he comes on. It is so obvious.

Overall, I'll take the win. I thought again this week, we showed good character to come back from a deficit and take the win. I just wish we could get rid of those silly errors from our game and the silly penalties. Teams like Melbourne and Souths will destroy us on the back of those.

Edit: Scores. I forgot.

Good summary of the game Bretto.

I totally agree about Prince. Short of signing both Milford and Barba, Prince is currently our best option for next year at No. 6, even more so with Hodges out. We need experience on the ground and in the backline, and Prince is currently delivering in terms of providing structure and support. You can see the amount of talking he's doing on the field - and its helping (the dynamic between Prince and Wallace never gelled at all).

If Wallace hasn't played himself out of the team, surely Glanville and Baptiste have played themselves into the team. Only the coach doesn't see this.

I agree with Daz & Bretto 100% -If Prince keeps kicking like that and creating little attacking headaches for the opposition, I am keen for another year as well. I think you're right about them trying harder once they get given notice.

Wallace tried to show some usability and though I didn't think his coming on was as bad as the last 2 weeks, it's high time Griffin makes the call to either keep Macca on FT and use that bench spot for another prop/2d rower/gillet style utility, or employ one of our specialist hookers and give macca more game time.

Wallace last week showed his ungratefulness to the side that gave him SO many chances and it will only be a matter of time before we see his performance drop (to even lower standards -if that's even possible) on the field.

Watching at the ground, I thought Drew went missing a bit. Not having a go at him; it's only to be expected for an 18 yr old on debut but after watching a replay of the first half, he actually made some great plays in defense. Hits hard and reads the play well. I like the look of him. Just needed to involve himself a bit more. Glad Kahu is back, though.

3. Matt Gillett - Our best strike weapon on the day.
2. Corey Parker - Typical Parker performance. Very involved and constantly made metres up the middle and wasn't afraid to call or set up plays.
1. Jack Reed - Came up with some big plays and was very reliable down our left hand fringe.

Votes could have gone any which way between the forwards, Hunt & Hoffman in the end, I thought these were the most important players for us on the day.

Very even contest and I feel had the game gone another 10-20 minutes the lead would have changed again.

Still, Brisbane did enough to win on an afternoon where they lost their strike weapon relatively early in the piece. Whether it was just the spirit of the occasion remains to be seen but for their sake, let's hope they can build on that second half by this Friday.
