It should be a good game of football with both teams looking to impose themselves after disappointing seasons.

Brisbane currently sit with a 2-0 record and while they've been far from convincing their commitment has been much improved thus far. In years gone by whenever they were under pressure they would immediately crack and concede tries in bunches. However so far they've shown more grit with players often covering for their team mates and appearing in situations you wouldn't expect to see them in. A prime example from the weekend was Albert Kelly coming from the other side of the field to cover Addo-Carr's kick to seal the game.

However that can only take them so far so they'll need to improve if they want to compete for a finals spot. They won't win too many games with only 41% possession, so they'll really need to improve their handling and end of sets.

The Cowboys are coming off their best win in years over Canberra and will be looking to make it two on the trot. They appear to be a much more organised team this year and while their attack leaves something to be desired, their defence is very committed. If the Broncos aren't careful they could fall into the same trap Canberra did where they kept turning the ball and made life easy for the Cowboys instead of turning it into a good ol' fashioned arm wrestle.

As it stands, I expect more of the same from last week UNLESS the Broncos can step it up a gear. There's certainly some improvements they can make as individuals, Kotoni Staggs in particular is playing well short of a gallop so it's up to them to make the difference.

All the best to any Cowboys fan who reads this and hopefully this can live up to the old derbies.

Teams are in and as expected no changes for the Broncos in their 17. The only change is David Mead coming in for the departing Jamayne Isaako in the reserves. Meanwhile Reuben Cotter comes in for Mitchell Dunn which for mine is an upgrade. I liken Cotter a lot to Kobe Hetherington, both former dummy halves who have transitioned to the backrow and just excel at the grunt work.

Patrick Carrigan has been cleared to play after suffering a knee injury at training.

TC Robati has been dropped with former Cowboy Corey Jensen to take his place.

Cobbo might be the most overhyped young player I’ve ever seen. Absolute insult to Inglis and Mitchell to compare them.

North Queensland Cowboys 38 def. Brisbane Broncos 12 (Herbie Farnworth 2 tries; Reynolds 2/2 goals)

The Cowboys delivered the Brisbane Broncos a reality check and announced themselves this afternoon at Suncorp. The Broncos had plenty of opportunities in the first half but struggled to put toger consistent plays and the try right on half-time proved pivotal.

Brisbane then played into the Cowboys hands committing a number of errors deep inside their own half and the Cowboys were able to punish them with some well-weighted kicks and some fairly soft efforts from around the ruck.

It was an afternoon to forget for the Broncos who also lost second-rower Jordan Riki early to a rib injury. Ryan James also appeared to pick up an injury late but played on and both Palasia (Crusher) and Hetherington (Dangerous Throw) were put on report.

One of the more pathetic performances I’ve seen from the Broncos. Completely outmuscled and over enthused in almost every department.

I think the fact that Jordan McLean had a big day shows how bad we played.

The spine concerns me, Turpin is a park footballer, offers absolutely nothing in attack and the more I watch Niu the more I think he’s just a poor mans Milford when he was a half decent player. He’s horrible under the high ball and when he’s not dropping balls blokes are out leaping him.

Apart for his standard highlight play, Staggs was his normal lazy self and Cobbo for all the wraps he gets appears to not have much upstairs and looks slow.

Farnworth, Carrigan, Hetherington and Haas were all solid.

Cows were just too good for us. Turpins service out of dummy half is too slow and we need to look at maybe a Paix Walters combination? Staggs had an absolute shocker and must be one or two more poor performances from being dropped.

We need to take a page out of the Cows book and go early in defence and dare the ref to penalise us. You cop the occasional penalty but get away with many that aren't pulled up.

Still waiting.

Far from sold on the fullback.

Albert will not get you there.

Can we have Haas? best forward in the game for mine.

Geez owned by Chad and Val, bad times indeed.

That's crap about the Cowboys going early. Every team goes early including the Broncos. The play the ball is the biggest blight in the game. Defenders pushing or holding the player playing the ball, defenders laying in the ruck, defenders not square. The powers to be are obsessed with the game being played at touch like speed and are taking the genuine footballers out of the game.

What the Cowboys did well was do it consistently. The referee will ping you for it, but he's not going to call everyone. Granville was blatantly in-front of the referee on one of the final in-goals. They were also using the Storm tactic of herding the play by being blatantly off-side down one side of the play the ball. Olam is the king of it, Townsend was doing it all game (and got called for it, but not all the time).

It's not a dig against the Cowboys, you play to the whistle. It's up to the Broncos to match it and they were nowhere near them this afternoon.

No Champ, that's sour grapes. The Broncos were never in that game. And why would you have to bring the storm into the equation.

Because they're one of the top teams and one of the best exponents of the tactic.

I don't have an issue with it, but it was absolutely a feature of the play this afternoon and of the past couple of years. That's why the NRL brought rules in to try and police it better.

Played against a team the didn't play poorly like the 2 prior
Nowhere near a top 8 side at this stage.
Tipping the warriors to give us a further reality check this weekend
