round 4 fallout

Easy wins against a poor roosters and a poor Knights teams has probably masked a few problems we have in our team.
To start with our forwards lost us that game. Graham and tolman absolutely dominated. I have serious questions on george burgess worth. He is one of the highest paid players in the game and we aren't getting value from him. Tyrell was crap to, but je is only on a small fraction of the money that George is on plus his role in the team is to cover G.Burgess defensive deficiencies. Long term I'd like souths to move him on and get a cheaper more effective prop but short term I'd like to see sam move to prop and George to the bench. When George is good his very good, but far to many yimeshe is actually detrimental to the team.
Goodwins bubble bust, he had a shocker, and was huge relief when madge pulled him with 20 minutes to go. Hopefully auva'a starts next week and aj is back (oldfield was ok).
Our halves need work, our kicking game is basically bomb with no chase. Both were limited in attack due to the forwards being dominated, and both showed glimpses at times, but jeez we need Reynolds back.
Inglis. Well for the first time ever I'm doubting inglis. He wasn't actually bad, and early on he was taking hit-ups when the forwards weren't. But there is problems there obviously.
So in summary
Players to drop- goodwin, carter
Players to the bench- G.Burgess
Players on notice- cook, tyrell, clark, inglis (never thought I'd say that)

Team for next week
Inglis
Aj
Hunt
Auva
Gray
Walker
Keary
Tyrell
Mcinnes
S.burgess
Turner
Brown
Grevsmuhl

Cook
G.burgess
Clark

Tyrrel and George were an absolute disgrace. Tyrrel did not take a single hit up in his first stint on the field. He's an absolute joke. George had the chance to come and show everyone he isnt just Sam's brother and made 25 metres in his first 20 minutes on the field. Our first set of 6, and a prop touched the ball on the 4th tackle.

Short turn around and grueling 430 tackle effort on a wet track last week can't have helped your side. It's a big scoreline but I wouldn't be calling for mass sackings just yet. They'll woop Manly next week for sure.

Guys we need to cool down and think with our heads. Everyone is a bit pissed off and fired up over the result and rightfully so. However, lets calm down and remember we are only in round 4. Remember, the Cowboys lost their first 3 games last year and were absolutely shocking in them. I can remember in 1999, Brisbane, the defending premiers, lost something like 8 out of their first 9 games or something but still went on to make the finals. My point is that all is not lost and we should not run around like lunatics wanting everyone to be dropped.

There are two key factors that need to be taken into account. One of those is that we were missing 6 of our top 17 players. That's a huge amount and any team in the comp would suffer if they had that many injuries. The other thing that we need to consider is that we were fielding a highly inexperienced team against a team of seasoned first graders. In saying that, I do believe some changes need to be made. Firstly, I believe Kyle Turner needs to go out of the team and Grevsmuhl needs to start. Secondly, Damian Cook needs to be our starting hooker, Dave Tyrell need to start from the bench in favour of Tom Burgess or another front rower; we cannot afford to be playing back rowers, like Clark, in the front row and going into games light.

My team would be this:
1. Inglis
2. Johnston
3. Goodwin
4. Hunt
5. Gray
6. Walker
7. Keary
8. G. Burgess
9. Cook
10. T. Burgess
11. Grevsmuhl
12. Carter
13. S. Burgess
14. McInnes
15. Brown
16. Tyrell
17. Auvaa/Clark

I'm inclined to agree with you. Watching him over the last 18 months, it is clear to me that Tyrell has gone into decline. In 2014, I thought he did a terrific job and was probably on the verge of a bench spot for the Maroons. Since, then he has fallen away and just doesn't seem to get involved enough.

That's a very very good point. That game in the wet was absolutely horrible. By the end of it you could see the players were absolutely knackered. Making over 400 tackles would have taken its toll on the players bodies and having to back up against a big, physical team like the Bulldogs was always going to be difficult. Also, don't forget that this was a very young and inexperienced South Sydney team that took the field today.

I'm not really for dropping players just yet because we haven't really got many players fit atm but I do think there should be warning signs for some of them.

Re the hookers I don't think Cook should start; I think he should come in much sooner though. Cam played the first 50 minutes or so and he was absolutely exhausted, while Cook came on and brought a breath of fresh air to our team. McInnes is fine but we need to use Cook more.

We didn't really have a forward leader out there and that really hurt especially against a giant pack like the Dogs. Tyrrell and Clark are makeshift forwards who aren't gonna lead anyone and the likes of Brown, Carter and Auva'a are too rough around the edges and are just starting to mature as players. This hit out will be good for them but with Sam and Tom coming back in i'd probably drop Tyrrell and Brown, maybe Clark.

Keary really needs a rocket up his arse, I can't blame Cody for taking a bit of a back seat considering its only his 4th game in first grade but Luke was playing like a NSW Cup calibre player in the first half. He did some good things in the second half i.e. learning how to f*cking kick a ball into the in goal but once Reyno comes back I definitely think he should go back to the Bears. Cody outplayed him but he needs to call for the ball more.

Team for next week...

1. Greg Inglis
2. Alex Johnston
3. Bryson Goodwin
4. Hymel Hunt
5. Aaron Gray
6. Cody Walker
7. Luke Keary
8. George Burgess
9. Cam McInnes
10. Tom Burgess
11. Paul Carter
12. Kyle Turner
13. Sam Burgess

14. Damien Cook
15. Nathan Brown
16. Chris Grevsmuhl
17. Kirisome Auva'a

There are two forwards in the side who I believe shouldn't be in the side next week. One is Tyrell

Brown tried hard, and even though he seemed to get smashed a few times still always managed to get an offload away which we have always lacked.

The one mistake i cant forgive Carter for is that DUMB run on the tryline. RUN STRAIGHT and that push back and drop ball doesnt lead to a try. McGuire should have yanked him from the field right then.

Ive always said Tyrrell is awful, he is a Pillow and should buy a lotto ticket for avoiding the wrath of Graham. Should have sent him packing and bought back Luke Burgess, atleast he doesnt shy away from the work and still can tackle.

I know they had alot of time in the in goal line but sometimes was disappointed with the lack of talk from captain Inglis

Guys, you lost against a quality team. You definitely played poorly and there's no excusing that at all but don't go throwing the noose over the nearest branch.

You're going to have bad games. I will be watching the game after the Broncos game and I'll see for myself.

For now, keep your chins up!!!

Getting Sam back was the only smart recruitment Souths did in the last 12 months

End of last season with no Sam in the team Souths were down 0-22 at halftime vs Bulldogs, down 0-30 at halftime vs Roosters, lost 12-47 to Broncos and lost badly to the Sharks in the finals

Today down 0-32 at halftime vs Bulldogs without Sam was just a continuation of the form from the end of last season

Souths have way too many NSW Cup players in their top 20 players

Maguire is a great coach with the players he's got. But he is a hopeless recruiter
