Ditto. Having the correct halves partner too is important. Who of Flanagan or Atkinson will it be in '26.Work in progress / watch this space.

You spoilt your previous post with this. Doubt Flanno is planning any more of these poundings, already has egg on face with his on record apology. Ilias is big enuff and ugly enuff (an old expression) to take his admonishment on board.
I totally agree with you. I do believe halves are built upon a long term investment more so than natural talent. All the best halfbacks have been ‘students of the game’. It’s very early days indeed but my gut feel is that Ilias does have the ‘smarts’ and is likely to surprise his doubters. I hope we stick with him and he really takes off on this trajectory. Work in progress / watch this space.
A lot different these days TSP, with all the upper body wrestling in tackles and multiple players in a tackle to deal with, those dreamy passes are gone, and for that matter so is the around the ankles copy book tackle. Nothing better to watch than a great grass cutter.I’d probably ban pollies from sporting events.
I noticed that too and concluded it was all part of the grand plan.
Flanno snr can claim it was anyway at this point.
Maybe appeal to it being a strategy of the late great Jack Gibson during similar climactic conditions during the 81 season.
I sorely miss those attacking backlines stretched out behind, inch perfect spacing over 25 yards or more.
A thing of great beauty to behold and when in motion.
A lot of junior fans are taught that the old days was just biff and violence, I can vouch for the fact that when the attack was pumping, it was dreamy.
Passing was encouraged, especially inside passing… the object was not to draw a penalty as it is today!
C'mon RVH, you forgot to mention Hunt, you remember him dont you ?Reckon Ilias 'd be happy to be rated alongside Cronk. My pick of our modern era halves.
Yeah, Flanno is old school, alright. Like Ricky and Bellyache. That's okay by me. We've lacked that sort of energy in the place since forever. He's the sort of 'stick of gelignite strapped to a sky-rocket' that we've needed to wake the joint up from its years slumber....basking in the fading glory from an era when half of the modern day fans weren't even born.
Promoting glory days and traditions (of both clubs, I might add) forged many years ago doesn't win too many games on the footy field, unfortunately.
Still very embarrassed by Lance Thompson's memorial match......and that was years ago.
And the slide kept going.....but we still talk on about tradition like it's some sort of mystical ingredient that will infuse our players with match-winning powers. We probably would have done just as well praying to the volcano gods for all the good 'tradition' has done for us for such a very long time.
Yep! bring on the fireworks with the guy whose got gelignite strapped to his privates. God knows that I'm sick of this malaise of ordinariness. And if the players happen to get in the way of a public flogging.....so be it. Embassement can be a very handy teaching tool. Stuff wokeness.
Aaaah!.....I feel so much better having vented my spleen. Good night, all.
ThisI'm interested in knowing other members thoughts on Wishart. I suppose for a while now lots have been banging on about wanting him as a 7. Well we got a good look at him as a 7 vs the Dragons. Would we still want him there as a 7 or a utility? did he do anything brilliant ? did he do a better job than Illias ? Just my thoughts are if he were to come to the Dragons he would be a great 14 to have, I dont think he has nailed down any position yet, let alone halfback.
I have never thought Wishart is a player to build a team around to me he is a 14 and a good effort player, who can fill in when needed, i don't see him as a 7 leading a team around for 27 rounds + finalsI'm interested in knowing other members thoughts on Wishart. good post Rev, yep as Slip and AY mentioned above, he will find it awfully hard now to shake off that 14 tag. I suppose for us we would have Atkinson at 6 and probably Ilias at 7, Flanno jr at lock. Reed and LKT as backup if they are still there. If you have a view on Wishart based on his 59 first grade games, thats fair enough.. but you cant assess it on last weekend... the guy is playing wing, then fullback, then 6, then 14, then he has all of 1 week as the 7 to replace the dominant Hughes.. very few players can pull that stuff off... and we really picked on his defence in the wet..
There might well be a 7 in him, in a structure that Bellyache sets up, whether we could replicate that I dont know.. he is 25.5yrs old now though (time has flown).. so if someone wants to offer him that jersey.. theyd have to get cracking soon.. problem is he cant exactly go back to reserve grade and learn to play halfback for a year or 2.. hes gonna have to learn on the job.. which is sort of what Atkinson will need to do, but atleast Atkinson will get to play 6 for us next year.. i.e. he will be in the halves each week.. Wishart could be anywhere from lock to fullback..
I know ppl think therefore Wishart is a natural 14 for life, but I think its just worked out that way because he does what suits the storm.. thats the price of staying with them.... be really curious what position he would play if we had kept him instead of Muhleissen.... probably a hooker.
The other thing with Melbourne is Hughes is probably there another 3-5yrs yet.. Munster maybe the same.. so tbh if Wishart wants a payday hes gonna have to leave.. and his window is closing... otherwise be happy with that 14 jersey, or filling in for injury.
See one occasionally JD. JdB almost always goes round legs and I have seen Liddle and even Ilias, with his prob closest to the old fashioned grass cutter. Take a squiz at some of his footage.Nothing better to watch than a great grass cutter.
Ilias put their defense in two minds which drew in an extra defender, then was only a matter of quick hands. For mine this was an Ilias created try. I hope Flanno praised him this time as that was a vital moment in the game..to figure out how 3 v 3 ended in utter disaster.
How remiss of me JD. Where is the vomit bag.C'mon RVH, you forgot to mention Hunt, you remember him dont you ?![]()
